A family member has to drive back to toronto today. We are east of Orleans so they are looking at taking the 417 through Ottawa. Just wondering if traffic on the highway gets worst on Canada Day due to celebrations going on? I never go to the city on Canada Day and while I know downtown is crazy busy, I wasn’t sure about the impact on the highway. Thanks in advance.
This might not factor in Canada Day, but simply a typical Monday.
They're literally live updates, like it's not guessing how much traffic should typically be present on an average Monday but it'll tell you the amount of vehicles actually on the road at any given moment.
I meant if they plan ahead...which they likely intend to if asking on here...
But in 2024, what's the purpose of that kind of planning ahead? I could look at the various routes available to me at 7am but that will have no bearing on the state of traffic at whatever my actual departure time, let's say noon. With an app I can just check at 11:59 and see where there might be an accident or a road closure or just plain volume and then take the best route available at exactly that time.
I don't think you get it. They're travelling to Toronto. If they check at, let's say, 6 PM, it might already be too late to avoid a 10 hour commute. OP wanted to avoid potential delays that Google Maps mayne can't account for with the randomness of Canada Day.
Glad you know what year we're in, bur open your eyes, ;).
It'll probably be better than normal rush hour traffic in Toronto
https://511on.ca/map Search "Ottawa", Turn on camera layer in layers on right, Map also show traffic cone symbols for construction zones
Ottawa 417 and even 416south are the least of your worries
It's sections of 401 u should worry about(unless taking #7 thru Peterborough)
The bad traffic happens on all of the local streets once the fireworks are over. It can take two hours or more to get out of the core and/or cross the provincial border. But no problem for the 417.
The 401 will be congested toward Toronto as residents return after the long weekend.
Google Maps will give you live traffic updates so just have them punch in the destination at departure time and decide on a route accordingly.
