I was summoned for Jury Duty this am, Cleveland county. I did the online register about a week ago, I have zero issue doing jury duty. But this morning around 6 am I woke up wheezing and by 730 it was a full scale severe asthma attack and I knew I needed to go to the ER. I called the jury line and left a voicemail with my info and the situation, and even waited until 8 to call and speak with someone. She stated she didnt know what I should do but that shed get my info down to the clerk ASAP. Im currently in the waiting room panicked because I dont want a warrant or anything because I didnt report without prior approval. Any ideas on what could happen?
Yeah, Im sure I came off intense calling a few times lol
You'll be fine. Keep the hospital paperwork just in case.
Also be aware there's a phone scam going around about how you missed jury duty and they're coming after you. It's to get you to pay over the phone to "settle" it. Since you've had this situation, be sure you don't fall for it, thinking it's tied to your current issue.
This is good to know!
I had that happen last year! I was suspicious but played along and they gave it away when they wanted payment in Best Buy gift cards.
Reported the call and the number to the Sheriff's office and the DA, haven't heard back on the status, but all those attempts should be reported.
Hell, I called in for a "completely forgot about it" weeks after the fact, and they were basically like "Eh, since you called, we'll assume you weren't acting in contempt and let this one go."
That makes me feel so much better!! I dont know why but its had me panicked all morning!
I totally get it, the form is full of pretty serious language! But if they cracked down on every single person who missed jury duty or even most of them, the court would spend way too much of its already-overworked time filing contempt citations. So it makes sense to give the honest mistakes a break.
should be fine, but get a note from the doc to take to the courthouse, they'll want some sort of documentation as to why you didn't show
Just recently did my duty and what you’ve done is all you can do. Definitely get the doctor note, and once cleared call and let them know. If you were already assigned and due in for trial, that is what the alternate is for.
This was just day 1, I am planning on calling in a bit to confirm the messages were received
Are you okay? I wouldn’t worry about jury duty until you are back to being okay! Omgosh how scary!
Summons is not a subpoena
Relax, you're way beyond good. Most people just no show. I was in a similar situation about ten years ago, and the clerk told me most people just don't show up, no phone or anything. Tell the doctor what's going on and they'll write you a note. You probably won't need it, but best have it just in case.
Keep track of the date/times you did call and paperwork from the hospital just in case but it should be fine. Biggest concern would be if the person you talked to got busy and forgot to note it or tell someone.
They will probably reschedule your jury duty. Don't panic. Just save your documentation and keep in touch.
Make sure to hold on to discharge papers for a while just in case you're asked to document, but you'll be just fine!
Back in 2006 or so, I didn't realize I'd still have to show up for jury summons on Martin Luther King Day, so I called when I realized my mistake and they just sent me a new letter with a new date to show up for jury duty, no big deal.
You’ve gone above and beyond already. I didn’t realize I was summoned in Payne Co until years after the fact (was a student). As far as I know, they’re not looking for me up there. Focus on feeling better.
You have a doctors note. Jury duty is important but not worth dying over. You also called them to notify them of the issue. I wouldn’t sweat it. You did everything right.
