It's purely for aesthetics, unlike tail docking which CAN be for the good of the dog in some breeds (Dobermans apparently have stiff tails that break easily). Other dogs with commonly clipped ears are Great Danes and Dobermans. It's "breed standard" for some as show dogs, or in pitbulls case because they try to make them look "tough".
No as in livestock guardian breeds, most breeders will clip their ears and/or tail while they’re still puppies because they already have owners lined up for them who will use them for their breed purpose. My cattle dog had her tail docked by her breeder for the same purpose, she was the only one who didn’t go to a cattle farmer as her intended owner changed her mind.
And in the case of Doberman specifically, because they were bred to be guard dogs it was done so that the person they were sic'ed on didn't have two big floppy handles to control where the dogs head went.
I once heard this explanation:. Canines bred for domestication also selected for floppy ears, for some genetic reason that I don't understand. Pointy ears in non domestic canines signify a more aggressive animal, so cropped ears on domesticated dogs give the appearance of a more aggressive dog, whether they are or not.
When I ran my rescue, we had a white Pitbull Chihuahua mix. I still don’t know how that happened. We named her Snowball and she was adopted by a family in the Hamptons.
A bit of both, but more pibble. We think she’d been neglected and possibly abused. Once we were able to coax her out of her cage, she was a really sweet, funny, affectionate, playful girl.
I had a wiener dog, she was legitimately one of the most brainless dogs I’ve ever met. That sort of stupidity mixed with pitty aggressiveness is scary to think about. lol
I’ve not noticed but are dachshunds like basset hound as far as mixing breeds goes? Where it doesn’t matter what the other breed is the dog will always be basset hound body and head of other breed.
The shelter here calls them “lowriders”. Basset, corgi, and dachshund mixed with pit bull type dogs are pretty common here. Most of the dogs coming into the municipal animal shelter are ‘pit bull type’ mixes.
They're hunting/pest killing dogs. They had to be bred mean. People get them not knowing it's a potentially aggressive working animal and don't raise them with the same discipline larger breeds get. People think it's funny when the weenie dog acts tough, then they get bit.
Same with chihuahuas, bred to kill scorpions (and ruthlessly from what I’ve seen!) people often forget that most breeds had a working purpose and genetic memory is a thing.
I just feel bad for this dude because if his Doxy instinct ever kicks in he is gonna get that giant bus head stuck in a hole somewhere.
Daschitbull.
