Students shocked after Saint Barnabas HS announces sudden closure
I don't know anything about that school specifically. But this is happening everywhere. Esp places where COL is so high that it's either the poor and rich. The mid tier private schools, esp the parochial ones, that gave middle class families a non public option are under enormous strain. Some of this is charter schools exploding in popularity. Part is working families having to leave the city. Part is financial strain for those who remain.
There's also been a big exodus of children from the city. If you check who left and who moved back since then, it's largely young families.
There was an article a while ago about the death of 3 BR apartments. A mixture of not enough demand and more money can be gotten from a 2 BR + 1 BR. But it's also a bit of a spiral.
No 3 BRs means the price of one goes up which means people with kids are more likely to move out to where it is cheaper.
This is the natural outgrowth of treating NYC like a luxury product that people should pay more for the privilege of accessing. That was Bloomberg's aim.

The reason for this is that there are simply less middle class people in general that are able and are willing to shell out tuition for a "mid tier" private school education.

Charter Schools definitely accelerated this, but the 'good' ones (Success, Classical, etc.) have a lot of issues of their own. The average Charter School is not much better academically than the average parochial school, except that it is free.
Agree. I think they’re about the same. The main appeal of these parochial schools is they filtered out the worst kids who screwed up education for everyone else. Charter schools have basically taken on this role.
The main crux of the issue is tuition. Families arent able, or arent willing to pay for it, and those who can, will opt to send their kids to a more upscale private school something something wealth inequality
