I thought what he said was nice as I know he coached there but I am not sure why he left / was removed?
To add to Maurice loving Winnipeg, his daughter currently resides there as a teacher.
Really? That's hilarious, one of the owner's daughters is also a teacher in winnipeg.
The team drastically improved the next season also
Yea. Him leaving was the last brilliant coaching move he would make in Winnipeg.
It was also the first good coaching move he made for a couple years
it's reddit, someone's gotta be the turd in the punchbowl.
You knew it was coming. That's why I try to stay off Twitter. Is there something lower than a cesspool? Whatever it is, that's Twitter (and I refuse to call it X).
It's the sludge at the bottom of the cesspool
Meh it’s a thread about “what happened to Maurice in Winnipeg” just cause he won a cup doesn’t mean he didn’t fuck up in Winnipeg, Bowness spoke multiple times about how awful the culture was in Winnipeg when he arrived. Even when he retired he mentioned something along the lines of “I came here to fix the culture and get them back to being a competitive team” I wasn’t exactly happy with PoMo in those last few years, that being said I am happy he won a cup. He spent a lot of time here and it’s not like he purposely sabotaged this team, he just overstayed his welcome and he even knew that
There was a lot of talk of scheiffle/wheeler dividing the room with a lot of toxic bullshit. They took the C off of wheeler. You never know whats true, but i cant remember a time when a coach stwpped down if it wasnt for family reasons.
It seems like there was something in the room blocking progress. Rumor around town is Schief was involved in some shenanigans that resulted in some disharmony. Look at who's still on the team next time you're pondering why they're not making any strides.
He repeatedly shows that he’s a first class coach and more importantly a first class person.
The skill players had no on ice effort. It was like a football game where the O has nothing to do with the D. The team also had to placate to egos. Look at how long it took for Morresey to grab the spotlight. From his first game you could immediately see his potential.
Sacrifice and “leaving Winnipeg” rarely go together.
He lost the room. Thought the team and him self would do better without each other
That locker room lost itself and their GM has no clue how to fix it
GM Chevy already fixed the main locker room problems by hiring Bowness as the head coach at the time, who stripped Wheeler of his Captaincy. Then, the following off-season, Chevy bought out the shitty Wheeler contract (that made ZERO sense altogether) and Bowness continued shaping the teams identity in Defense.
The LA fleece with pld was solid too
Hopefully Vilardi can maintain his health to play a full season. Talented as hell and didn’t deserve that trade, but wish him the best in ‘peg
As a stars fan I really miss Bowness. His offense was 1 dimensional but damn I feel the players really liked him in Dallas
I think Pete DeBoer is a fine coach and I am glad we in Dallas have him. But Rick Bowness is a class act and first rate coach. Both of them are really likeable.
I’m growing more and more worried we reached the winning threshold Pete deboer has shown in his other stops. We had the talent this year, but they over worked Miro and his insistence to play Suter because of their history was a little much to me.
Not to mention his powerplay coach/children’s godfather
Keep in mind that's the threshold that Maurice used to have, too.
But look how long it took Paul Maurice. It ain't easy but my dude we had a very successful year overall.
Capital D Defense. That real shit.
The problem was that they seemed to have chosen as a franchise for a period to ignore character concerns on the player front and just draft shitbag after shitbag.
That teams never been well-managed.
It's basically the same core. They're a one and out playoff team that clearly isn't good enough to do any damage in the playoffs. They look like a team that needs to blow it up, but can't because of the financial implications.
Lol yes, obviously you blow up teams who finish 4 points out of first place.
That's a remarkable achievement, that means absolutely nothing.
1 out of 32 teams win the cup.
I think the last 4-5 years have made it pretty clear that Winnipeg, despite how well the play in the regular season, isn't going to be that 1 team anytime soon.
As much as I don’t think they have what it takes to win the cup as they’re currently constructed, a couple tweaks with the same core and it could push them over the top.
Cries in Bruins
No it was fixed massively when Blake wheeler was bought out.
When from possibly having lots of players leaving to now them signing.
Shitty move that they traded Laine instead of seeing the problem being Blake Wheeler
What's the difference? Regardless they weren't following the coach as a team should. There were many factors to lead to that. Arguing about how to word that is pointless.
Lol. What a take
Hey Homer!
This is the answer according to my BIL who is involved with Hockey Canada and from Lasalle/Windsor, so he know's people who know Paul Mourice.
Florida won the Stanley Cup because, as a team, they bought into a system where discipline, aggressive forechecking and defending your end/goal was put over offence. The players bought into the system and in the 2 years he was there, he got the team to the finals and then won the league Championship the year later.
In Winnipeg, he knew he had all the offensive fire power that could battle any team, but you would have been hard pressed to coach these player to remember to be a 2-way team and be defensive. It would have been an uphill battle to get the Jets roster to buy into a similar system with the egos he needed to work with. Doing so required a culture change in the roster and Maurice resigned knowing he could not make it happen.
Rick bowness did it with them…. Turned them into the #1 defensive regular season team
An improvement, but not quite to the level they would need to make it to the next levels of play to take them far in the playoffs.
Pk subban, is that you?
I thought his comments about how the pathers locker room actually likes each other was pretty telling. All those years of Dusty, kane, PLD, Trouba. It's easier to get a new coach in the short term than try to turn players into "team guys".
Don’t forget Wheeler.
My theory... Blake Wheeler is a dickhead.
According to Wikipedia, he is the record holder in losses. I wont blame him though, He coached some terrible teams (looking at you, post Sundin leafs).
It’s a scary stat at face value, that gets less scary when you dig in on it for the why:
In addition to the all-time losses record for the NHL, Maurice also holds the fourth most all-time wins in the league; an eye injury early in his career kept him from playing so he got into coaching a lot sooner than most coaches.
This means a lot of the reason for holding the loss record (and his position in the standings for all-time win record) boils down to pure attrition- Maurice coached his 1000th NHL game when he was only 43 (!) and at 57 he’s now got something in the neighbourhood of 1870 games coached… for context, it’s nearly 100 more games than Lindy Ruff (the next most tenured active coach) who’s coached 1775 games and is 7 or 8 years older than Maurice!
crazy stuff, he will most likely coach the most games ever
It's like Brodeur, all time most losses as a goalie but also most wins, and most shutouts lol
I mean…he coached the Whalers.
Basically he lost the room. There were way too many high paid egos that didn't respond to coaching. Wheeler was certainly one of them.
I was curious why he wanted Winnipeg to win over the other teams that he coached in the past.
I originally thought it was a low-key troll, as he ordered a 45-minute bag skate when he knew he was getting canned and left the rink. But he's too classy for that. I think he just genuinely thinks the city deserves a cup.
I think that’s it. Plus he’s from the Soo - Winnipeg was the closest team to Sault Ste. Marie when he was growing up, betcha he’s got that hometown pride too, just a little bit.
What are you talking about? The Soo has many NHL teams closer than Winnipeg. Like, tons. In Canada, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal are all closer. In the States? Detroit, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Minneapolis, hell even Nashville is closer. I'm probably missing some too. Obviously not all of these teams existed when he was growing up, but many of them did.
Nobody in the Soo cheers for the Jets based on proximity. I know this because I was born and raised here.
I completely agree! As another Saultite I do not think of Winnipeg as the hometown team. Definitely Toronto or Detroit. There are dozens of us!
As an aside I think the number of NHLers with Soo connections is crazy disproportionate to the population but I guess that's just because of the hounds?
Absolutely agree, Toronto and Detroit are definitely the big two here.
Agree on the second point too, the Soo is definitely one of the most overlooked hockey towns. I didn't even know Maurice was from the Soo until this series, but it made cheering for the Panthers even easier than it already was as a flames fan.
I believe Winnipeg is double the distance than the soo would be to Toronto or Ottawa
Winnipeg took a flyer on him when they hired him as his track record didn’t say Stanley, but they saw something more in his character that said he deserved the shot. It obviously didn’t pay off quite as expected but there are other factors at play as others have already mentioned. Taking Florida (ugh) all the way was a class act as they responded to his style. And honouring Wpg with that statement just shows how much he loved Winnipeg and would have stayed if……..
I think it shows he’s going to retire. Imagine the head coach of your team saying they hope another team wins the next Cup.
It was a hot mess and he said fuck it. I’ve quit jobs like that before
Like anyone good, the fan base blasted him out
Crazy old Maurice. He’s always good for a laugh
Same thing that happened in Hartford, Toronto and so on.
Probably just didn’t see the team as the right fit for him
The Soo is a working class, beer drinking, swearing, rough tough hockey town…so is Winnipeg…those other closer towns are just wanna be’s !!!
You can't win with guys like Scheiffle and Wheeler being your best players and leaders. Maurice show that the team couldn't go any further. In the end he was right and he went to a coach with hungry guys and locker room that was more set to care about the team instead of the individual, they thrived. Maurice is a heck of a coach, you don't stay head coach that long if you aren't. Also don't believe this retread crap, it's a line by people who don't know hockey.
Judging by the Panthers’ style of play, Jets’ style of play (stretches), he’s pretty set in his defense-first-strategy. That can wear a group down after a while. Plus, you can have limited success: skilled teams willing to play strong defense will pick that system apart. IMHO
They others teams had a whole year to figure it out, while Florida picked up some bigger and better talent. Panthers are just a frustrating team to play, they will no doubt go to the playoffs next year.
I always thought Maurice left bc he saw an opportunity in FL when Quenneville was forced to resign end Oct. 6 wks later Maurice's public statement seemed so weird at the time. Not sure what his contract stated about him resigning and how much time has to lapse before being hired elsewhere; but Ive always suspected he wanted to coach that team vs stay in WPG.
He left because he lost his love for the game during the covid season, and it didn't come back. He wanted to leave sooner, but the GM and ownership convinced him to stay.
Because it's the Jets....
WHEN YOU’RE A JET YOU’RE A JET TIL THE END
True, it’s a love hate relationship
Unless you’re ignominiously traded.
1 of 2 Team had a lot of dis function . They had contact issues . Skilled players hurt long term . Never knew what player / lineup was going to show up and play. Road games were an adventure with some of the players . Winnipeg is not on any players choice destination if they can avoid it . Winter is brutal cold . Very tough with a family. However some did in trades because they did not have No trade clause in there contracts . Coach has to work with the players he is given . GM needed to get the rose colour glasses off and make changes . Maybe he did and there was no takers or the was 1 sides . Paul Maurice is a players coach . Smart hockey man and well respected. Have you ever seen him through 1 single player under the bus ? Have you ever seen him make anything about him when it positive or any buddy but him when it’s negative. Road game travel brutal . When things area going bad and you are in a place you don’t want be in . Going to the rink has always been the escape. But what was going on at times with more than a few guys . Made that not enjoyable . Any way you want to believe what happened when Winnipeg and Paul Maurice split . You are not a quitter when you go into that meeting and speak your mine as a coach and a coach can’t fix the endless drama that went on . Every day part of his job is be available to the media. His job win consistently. He come to a point where for himself he had to move on . Hypothetically was it the GM’s decision to make a change ? Don’t know . It’s real easy for a coach that has time on his contract to walk in that meeting . Say nothing and they tell you you are out . Nothing new in the game . You sign the non disclosure paperwork. That outline you keep you mouth shut . We keep our mouth shut. We pay you the terms of the current contract in full over the term . We may ask you to do other things like scout occasionally. You take anther head coaching job in the NHL . Contract agreement ends . Take a head coaching job at other levels . That’s outlines how the contract is honoured . Usually dollar for dollar . NHL paid 1million per season and you takes a AHL job - pay is 500K to keep it simple . NHL team still pays you $500 K . Rumour has it Maurice resigned, quit , agreed to mutually part ways . Never sign the paperwork and assured them he will conduct himself as expected . The hockey world is very tight . They continually rotate the same bodies in the same roles for different logo . In the moment when you move on your 1 st though is not get back behind the bench ASAP . Even if you have another offseason passion you have always looked forward to putting all your time into that . Then at some point all the things you love about the game are on your mind constantly, the negative things you get your head around it thinking you will handle this differently. Job comes up . Bang your name is mentioned regardless how that come about - contact is made and the process starts . Time away from the game is the right medicine that heels the wounds . Then that passion takes over the one thing most guy it’s all they know from 16 yrs old . Change of scenery. Fresh start and the right situation. Coached the team to the finals year 1 and Coached the Florida Panthers to the franchise 1 st Stanley Cup Championship year 2 . Personally he is 44 yrs old . His name is all over the league record book . Coached in some organizations more than once . In 1 organizations that the toughest place to coach . Media and fan expectation can wear on you . Coached in one of the toughest locations for travel , weather , thought to attract high end free agents even rentals at trade deadline . Other situations off the ice . Took a job in the KHL and now has earned what every player / coach / support staff sacrificed along the journey to work their way up accomplished the ultimate reward
2 of 2 You Name on Lord Stanley with all the other . Lots of players / coaches . Support staff hit the 1000 plus games mark in the NHL , signed big contracts , put up impressive # for many seasons - never achieved the ultimate reward - winning Lord Stanley. Those guys get asked often would you trade the big contracts, all the awards for 1 Stanley Cup . The person asking doesn’t even get finished and the answer is clearly known without hesitation. Often the person being asked is can’t believe you asked that . Just look at Conner McDavid after the game 7 loss . He’s got 7 good yrs left in him bar injury . He’s no dummy and realize no guarantee you will get anther change . He is aware of the long list of great players and coaches that never accomplish that . Corey Perry won his 1 st Cup in his 2 NHL season with Anaheim. 17 season ago . Spent the last 4 of 5 Stanley Cup finals on the loosing team . Signed with Edmonton Jan 21 1024. When Kane cut his wrist that opened an opportunity for Perry . League rules has provision where a team can sign a player with Perry’s games played in the NHL beyond the TDL and is eligible for Stanley Cup playoffs. Likely this 5 loss is his last shot . The practice, games , shifts , preparing for the season , work put in day to day was 10 X harder the last 6 yrs than the 1 st 12 season and 1 Stanley Cup win . The game is way faster - the last 8 -10 yrs , pace of the shifts are full out 50 sec . The game is more physical mainly because of the speed . The Stanley Cup Playoff is now all out war for 4 rounds compared to 12 yrs a go . The 1 st 2 rounds where war . Last 2 rds back then periods , games not entire series and all 4 like today . Add in regardless of you NHL stat sheet , if you are not getting it done . Next up in and you are out . I was just getting started in CHL when Perry last yr. In London when they won the OHL and Memorial Cup . Perry has a history with Edmonton. Drafted by Anaheim. - trade to Edmonton for Mike Comie - trade never finalized, money issue ? . London get eliminated from OHL playoffs. Perry gets sent to Cincinnati - Anaheim AHL team to finish out the year / playoff . Next season doesn’t make Anaheim out of camp - back to London for final year- winning OHL and Memorial Cup . O5-06 makes Anaheim out of camp . Plays a few games Gets sent to AHL shortly after . Call back up scores 1 st NHL goal against Edmonton Oct 10 2005 , spent the better part or 05-06 up and down to AHL - Anaheim new affiliate Portland - gets called up just before playoff- Anaheim was eliminated by Edmonton in the WCF . 07 season sticks with Anaheim and he go on to win the Cup in his 2 nd NHL season . I remember it like it was yesterday. Perry is 39 years old . The players that I scouted when I started most long removed from their playing days many in coaching ,management , scouting .Scouted Conner McDavid minor Bantam U 13 ? Coaches Summer Hockey in the same league the yr he was drafted by Erie and witness his OHL career. Many more as well . Then all the ones sense right up to 2 yrs ago when I stepped back from hockey . It was time . 15 yrs full time on a coaching staff lost 1 season to Covid . Worked 50-60 hours a week at my day job . Missed 5 games due to weather when myself and our GM travel separate from the team . Do to my work schedule . In the end this beat up body could not ride that bus any more and my commitment to a new project at my day job had me concerned that I may not be able to make the commitment every one had been a custom to and what haunted me was making the call 30 minutes before the bus leaves for a 2 -3 game road trip and letting the Coach know I can’t make it . Never had to make that call . As it was I was training my replacement the previous season and was moving to the scouting side . Never even had time to do more than a handful of game. Did fill the GM request to train a new scout and mentor . A experience I was privileged to enjoy . The memory Priceless!
A condensed version might have been a good idea.
Didn't Maurice resign there? Maybe the most disfunctional franchise outside of Arizona
How are the Jets disfunctional? We literally live in the smallest NHL city, the coldest climate, high taxes, least corporate support, coming out of a pandemic, and in a recession. The Jets are fine and one of the most stable franchises in the league despite all of that, we’ve had some bad actors when it comes to players here but the ones who stay love it. Even the ones who leave, it’s rarely the city.
I'm not talking about the city I'm talking about the team, the locker room has been dysfunctional since day one and the team collapsed every playoffs. It was so bad there they ran a coach like Maurice off, even he knew being there was a waste of time
Younger players voiced their displeasure with leadership and Maurice was unwilling to make changes so they mutually parted ways and Bones stripped Wheeler of the C and made Lowry the captain this season. As for the playoff performances, definitely disappointing, seems they don’t have the right mix of guys or playoff performers at the moment. Not quite sure what the issue is to be honest.
He simply quit. HE IS A QUITTER. You can colour it whatever way you want, but he quit.
Quitting his way to a Stanley Cup
Paul Maurice: "This Winnipeg job is no longer fun and it's really cold here. I'm out!" I mean, like you say you can paint it any colour you want, at the end of the day he quit his job. Was it good for the team and himself? Maybe, but he still quit.
Even in interviews he said he took the team as far as he was capable of, they needed new leadership. That does not mean he quit, he knew they needed a new voice.
He looked around and saw that the team needed a shift. He knew that he couldn’t provide it, and knew that leaving would actually help the team grow. It was the ultimate sacrifice. He loved being in Winnipeg, he loved the players, the team, the community but despite and maybe because of that, he left because he thought it would make the team better.
That’s What I think actually happened.
