Overweight capoeira dancer shows great agility and flexibility
Sumo wrestlers have a life expectancy of 20 years less than the average Japanese man.
All that body mass helps in that sport but I don‘t think they are the fittest folks around.
The guy in this video must be a phenomenally naturally talented athlete along with years of dedicated training, so he succeeds in spite of being obese, not because of it.
They are fit, but not healthy
In my mind being fit is a synonym of healthy. Being strong or weak though is a different state. One can be strong/weak and fit/healthy or strong/weak and unfit/unhealthy.
Sumos are strong and unhealthy.
Chaotic/fat. We need a health/weight alignment chart.
What would someone be if they had been fat at one point, but are trying to be better and now fall somewhere below fat but certainly not fit yet?
Maybe like neutral/thick?
Neutral/thick is hilarious! That seems reasonable... Someone who walks on the treadmill one day per week but steals people's lunch from the work fridge is - evil/thick.
I feel like that one mukbang guy is the definition of chaotic thick
That guy really needs help.
X axis is conservative morbid obesity on the right and left is liberal soy starvation, y will be strength.
I'm fit and unhealthy.
Edit: the definition of fit alone is subjective. So, regardless of which definition you choose to comprehend, it's still the correct terminology.
Read, read.
I would imagine you could be a pro athlete and have life threatening cancer. This is what I think of as the difference between fitness and health. Generally though fit people are also healthy people.
Fit for sumo, unfit for longevity.
Ive always thought of it as fit being more your physical ability (agility, strength, speed - all the physical stats) which outwardly is usually presented as low fat with muscle tone. This guy here IS fit, but doesn't LOOK fit. And there are a lot of people that LOOK fit, but get winded going up a couple flights of stairs. Healthy I think of as exclusively an internal status.
You could be fit while simultaneously having high bp and cholesterol.
Just because someone LOOKS healthy doesn't mean they actually are.
Imagine their joints over time, maintaining an unnatural weight amount of fat
Fit is healthy.
Bodybuilders are probably the epitome of "fit". They are still completely debilitated in old age and are, on average, extremely unhealthy after a certain point. Fit does NOT equal healthy. You can be in great athletic shape, but have cancer.
95% of times, probably. But it's completely possible to be one without the other.
They are fit when they are still active in sumo but they didn't want to lose all the weight and stop heavy exercise after retiring it turn into lot of major health problems and lower life expectancy. I think there are documentation about it.
They are fit when they are still active in sumo but they didn't want to lose all the weight and stop heavy exercise after retiring it turn into lot of major health problems
Active sumo wrestlers have a super high injury rate due to their weight. They eat a horrible diet even when they are training for competition.
Fit isn’t really the term Eating like that still increases cancer rates, heart disease and insulin resistance. Just having extra mass and more cells increases most issues. They are simply stronger rather than fit or healthy.
Actually this is untrue. Former sumo who stop exercising but keep the weight have a very short lifespan. They have a normal lifespan as long as they either lose weight or keep training. Weight does contribute to mechanical wear and tear conditions like knee arthritis, and those conditions make it hard to keep fit. Of course, it takes determination to exercise while fat, but that's not an issue for the Sumo athletes.
Good episode of PBS Nova called "How Do Sumo Wrestlers Avoid Obesity-Related Diseases?", the whole episode is available online somewhere. It makes it clear that active, fat retired sumo have both healthy test results on things like blood pressure, aerobic performance, and blood lipids and good long term health outcomes. This is a great way to avoid self deception. If you think you're fat and healthy, get a physical, you may be right. Most people who think that are probably lying to themselves.
I don't know about that episode of PBS, but here's a slew of peer reviewed article that took me 30s to find with google:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/973605/ -- Sumo wrestler have way higher risk of metabolic disorders with much rates of gout 1/9, hypertension ~1/15, and diabetes ~1/20
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3761530/ -- Sumo wrestlers have shortened longevity, and there's a clear relationship between their BMI and their shortened lifespans
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34727687/ -- junior Sumo wrestlers have worse obesity and blood pressure than BMI-defined obese children that exercise from the same populations
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7474495/ -- Sumo are at greater risk of mortality for at every age cohort up until their 70s, and this risk is directly related to their BMI, with fatter sumos at greater risk.
Mind linking me the peer review PBS cited? Too ADHD to watch videos, personally

I'd put money on this guy learning while fit then gaining all the weight thereafter and retaining the skill.
Exactly Mass of any kind is stress on the heart. Bodybuilders are not healthy past a certain weight and it’s common back stage of contests for them to be winded, dehydrated and miserable. Fat, extreme muscle excess it doesn’t matter. The heart, vascular system, digestion and cancer correlations all factor into larger people with more cells having more risk long term. Clint eastwood and dick van dyke are some of the most rare size people at that age and they are just taller than average. I can’t think of anyone that was former heavy body builder or obese that’s made it to 90 or 100 in good health.
Imagine how much BETTER he would be if he lost the weight and focused on his talent
It is unhealthy to be overweight…
And this is not overweight, this is obese
Some of the strongest? Sure. They're up there. And you're right that fat doesn't make you weak. But fit? No. There are limits to a human body's ability to store fat in a healthy manner, and this man is very far past that limit. Anyone you would call fat typically is not fit, and their body weight and fat percentage are causing a myriad of health consequences, which only become worse and more varied over time. Live how you like, but do so with eyes open.
Sumo wrestling isn’t a healthy lifestyle, but they’re absolutely fit. Sumo conditioning is no joke, they just eat a ton. Something about a significant majority of their (high) fat percentage is directly beneath the skin and not around organs
“Most fit”
lol
You say that, but as sumo fan I genuinely feel they would get embarrassed going against a professional NFL lineman.
I feel the need to emphasize again…LINEMAN. That being said I saw someone mention edge rushers, which to be honest are basically linebackers. (They maintain outer gap and even do pass coverage). I played Linebacker in college, and many of the defenses then/today rely on having a very versatile defensive end. Ironically, defensive end and tightends are probably the most athletic players in the League.
There's video going around of I think CJ Stroud or somebody getting manhandled by a sumo wrestler
Micah Parsons
Stroud is there too but haven’t seen his vid
Parsons also won a rep, but I don't think it counts for much in that context. The thing is, just getting on an NFL practice squad pays more than just about any other sport. Is sumo wrestlers or rugby players could compete, they would. (And some do! It's just a different skill set and a very tough barrier to entry)
CJ Stroud is uhhh not a lineman.
It was Micah Parsons who is one of the best edge rushers in the NFL but he was just trying to bull rush and overpower the sumo, which the sumo did a great job of defending against and held his own/stopped Parsons. But in cleats and pads, Parsons would just swim right through the sumo, no bull rush needed
I think some fair context also is that sumo kid ( jun tanji) is 17 Micah parsons is 24 .Even more impressive tbh
Yea, someone replied to my comment in that thread when I was impressed by how easy he made it seem that that’s not even considered one of the top sumo guys whereas Micah is arguably one of the best in the league.
Well, duh. Micah is a linebacker and weighs 245 lbs. Of course he's going to lose to the sumo wrestler.
An actual offensive lineman would be a much different story. It's not like Micah really ever bullrushes them either, and if he does, it's with a running start
Yeah, Hakuho in his prime would destroy those guys.
In sumo or in football?
Lol just because they are good in 1 sport doesn't make good in another.
What an absolutely terrible take.
Weight makes you strong because physics. More weight behind a punch or kick. There is no arguing that. But fit? No man. No one who is carrying excessive of some 150 lbs of fat is "fit."
Also hella slow. Not that speed is a valuable stat in combat 🙃
strongest? Maybe. Fittest? Hell No.
Bob mains in Tekken know, it's speed and weight that creates power
sumo are some of the strongest and most fit around.
This is just flat out false
Must be hell on his joints
Yeah, and that head spin is a really bad idea.
Didn't some guy die in front of a group when he ran out, did some head on the ground thing and crunched his neck?
If I'm thinking of the same video it was a guy who did a backflip and landed on his head.
That’s why I’ve never done a back flip. I only front flip. I front flip everywhere
Yep, they just pulled him out of the way and continued the show.
it was a woman, tried to do a handstand without hand. Her neck broke.
Imagine how nimble he'd be without another bloke strapped round his waist.
Agreed no in hell his ankles and knees are doing ok
As they say, pain is just sweat leaving the body
My man here has more strength and flexibility than 99% of us basement-dwelling keyboard warriors
Capoeira is cool, man
My first introduction to this when I was a kid. I could not get enough of this movie it was so awesome!
Na na na waaaay
I must have watched it at least 30 times.
Mazda built a whole marketing campaign off of the Zoom-Zoom song from this movie!
Ah shit I can hear the “zoom zoom” from the commercials still. Might be the only marketing line from Mazda I remember
Quebra jerebra quebra
Pardon our way, pardon our way partaner
I often quote "What do I get ... for 20?"
Weren't the bad guys wearing Motocross outfits? I feel like I remember that from the movie..
Holy fuck a self aware redditor. I just found a unicorn.
Quick get a virgin to lure it into a trap. Hmm, I guess it won't be that hard either.
I fucking hate this guy: https://bobs-burgers.fandom.com/wiki/Jairo

and there is also zero chance he has the same level of stamina as someone with a healthy weight
he likely has more stamina that someone of healthy weight that doesn't exercise, or exercises a lot less. No way a complete shut-in who doesn't exercise at all, has more stamina.
Imagine fighting a bulldozer and it just starts flipping around and gracefully kicking you in the fucking head. Lol
I guarantee he cracks some farts during some of those moves.
Dealing poison damage (aoe/dot)
Exactly his attacks have DOT what does yours do ? just light attacks.
We all do, regardless of fitness. I guarantee you, you can do watch any music video and I promise one or two of those dancers let one rip.
Yoga class is where I experienced the most farting in public. Granted, it was all me...
The one where you put your hand on your back, lay down and lift you your legs? Farts all around, it was my highlight haha
Eddy Muy Gordo
Eddy Muito Gordo*
Ah, Portuguese, you're so right. This is the correct joke, LOL.
A combination of Bob and Eddy
Gringo não sabe a língua dos bão
Bobbie Gordo
New tekken character leak
Isn't this just bob?
Well it's unclear whether Bob is still big, because the released Skinny Bob as DLC in Tekken 7, so he could be skinny now
bob's story is that he gained weight on purpose so skinny bob skin is him before that
Lol, Eddie Gordo brother, Gordo Gordo, just makes sense now...
This dude's a badass, just figured the pun would be worth it.
He is the real Eddy gordo. Gordo in Portuguese means fat, and he is Brazilian.
I was just going to call him Eddie Gordito.
isnt he just fat Eddie?
How do his knees...exist?
Some people just have stronger joints. And muscle can also help hold things in place.
But seriously - some dudes just have the genetics where their bodies can handle a heavier load than most.
Any NFL lineman with a 10+ year career is like that. They average 3.
Probably trains his knee muscles.
They exist, until they don't. This is like bodybuilders, you feel all the damage in your later ages.
i don't know the specifics about the mechanics of capoeira, but for example if you use proper form in bodybuilding, make sure you're getting all the nutrients your body needs, and resting appropriately.. it's not gonna cause long term damage like that
the more you do something, the better the body gets at doing it.
You can eat healthy all you want, physics don't change. It's still using your joints outside of spec and it generally will lead to problems later in life.
Apart from the obesity itself catching up to him. Your whole body isn't designed to support being very overweight.
your body gets stronger as you use it more. it's constantly paying attention to what you're doing and trying to get better at what you're doing.
it's the same reason you experience drug tolerance and withdrawals and it's the same reason your muscles get bigger and stronger as you exercise them
yes, misuse of the joints can result in permanent damage. the point i'm making is that if you gradually increase the amount of pressure on your joints, rest between sessions so it can heal, and make sure you eat the proper things so it has the building blocks to regenerate itself, you should not experience this type of permanent damage and in fact it will be stronger when you are older, not the other way around
for example exercise makes the muscles around the joint stronger, helping it support those joints. the bone density increases around the joint. the ligaments and tendons become more resilient and stronger.
the damage is done when you try to life too much too fast with bad form OR don't take a couple of proper rest days with sleep & food and don't let your body recover
Had to scroll way too far to find this reference.
BRAHSEEL!
Capoeira is breathtaking but also breath giving.
Like a pigeon that flew into a bread crumb vending machine.
PONYTAIL!
Dude would be a fucking nightmare in a bar fight
absolutely!!! He is a dangerous man
It’s the wiff of ass that finishes his opponent.
Fuck you kindly bruh, dying from this 🤣
When weight is just a number.
Until it hits you in the face.
Well more like in the knees.. vascular system.. heart etc.
Those aren't typically targets in Capoeira
There should be a category just for him.
This guy combines extreme strengh, flexibility and combat skill in addition of being extremely tricky.
Even if you give me armor i wont be able to block thoses kicks
My only question is how the fuck is he overweight to begin with
You can't out run a bad diet
This dude is probably consuming 7,000-10,000 calories a day.
Is this the guy who kicked an aligator?
And had a pizza party with them!
Eddie Lardo
Fun fact: Gordo means "Fat" in Portuguese. So Eddie Gordo already means Fat Eddie.
"Brazil!! Ponytail!!!"
Nice! He's fat and athletic and I'm fat and pathetic.
Dancer? according to the Mark Dacascos classic "Only the strong" it's a martial art.
Bana na way bana na way na na na! Zum zum zum capoeira mata um!
Ba na na waaaaay!!!
I hate to be that guy, but it's "Paraná ê," referring to the Paraná river during the Paraguayan war.
He's showing us the art of...capoeira. It is life taking, but also...life giving.
I wonder if Jairo was his instructor.
PONYTAIL! Oh wait
🎶 Paranauê! Paranuê, Paraná🎶
That's what male peak performance look
Man I miss Capoeira... we practiced it for years, both my son and myself, but we decided to move. It's a really fantastic sports.
Our master was really overweight, and still had amazing moves, even though he was over 50 years old.
Does anyone else sing bananuweeee bananuweee bana nana when they see capoeira?
I always remember the guy from Bob's Burgers when I hear capoeira. Ponytail! Brazil!
Shaq Bob confirmed for Tekken 8 DLC!
Fat people who can absolutely move are scarier than buff dudes who can barely touch their their own elbows
My Dad was like that. He wasn't fast, but he was quick. We'd be lying on the floor a few feet in front of him and he'd be leaned back some in his La-Z-Boy. He'd make eye contact and grin and he could spring forward fast enough to catch us before we could roll over once to get out of reach. Then we'd get tickled.
It was just a fun way we played, but once I got old enough to appreciate just how quickly he could move at 500+ pounds it's amazed me.
Momentum = mass x velocity

PONYTAIL! BRAZIL!
Came here for this. I think most people in the US in the last few years first heard of this from Bob's Burgers.
Dude has INSANE control to be able to tap his partners in the head like a finger flick. If he connected for real, you'd wake up in the afterlife with a migraine.
In capoeira they say you don't want to kick your opponent in the face, you just want them to kiss your foot.
This dude single handedly changed my mind about capoeira. The tech he’s implementing is very cool
If you know you know
One hell of a strong neck
Now. Imagine the force of that last kick on you? Jesus!!!
That’s Kung Fu panda
Remind me of a fat spintop i had as a toy.
this dude legs are strong as fuck!
and his agility as absolutely bananas.
i would love to know his stretch routine
The weight behind those kicks must be insane!
Song?
This reminded me of someone testing which fighting style has the most powerful kick. Capoeira has the slowest but most powerful one
When you build Attack Speed on the tank
This man is more healthier and fit than most skinny ppl who eat garbage all day bc they don't gain weight.
I think we should hold this post to the same standards as the one about the “girl drummer”: why does it need to be labeled “overweight dancer”?
Always scared of very overweight people who are extra nimble. That's some serious strength. Also their joints are just taking that stress? I was overweight and walked all day in my job and now my knees sound like the skellingtons from Jason and the Argonauts.
Bob + Eddy = Awesome asf!
Tekken's Fat Bob + Capoeira Eddie in one man
Should be on an OLine with that footwork
Cam someone who knows capoeira tell me if what he's doing is Impressive in general, or just because of his size? Also each of these clips is only seconds long, how long can he sustain the effort?
Usually the fights (jogos or plays) last a minute or two, up to 5 minutes if they're in top shape, for this style of capoeira. There's a much slower style called Angola which is played closer to the ground and the music has a slower beat too. The plays in this style tend to go longer. The guy on the video wears a white cord, which means he's a mestre, or master. He's at the top of the capoeira game and the moves he does are quite fluid and flexible. You won't see him jumping around and doing a lot of floreios or acrobatics, but the two minutes he'll play, he'll kick your bunda with a smile on his face.
Edit to add: the moves he does are not particularly impressive but they're quite fluid. The jumping roundhouse kick is perfect. He knows how to use his weigh too when he drops and sweeps the other guy in two occasions.
I'll add that, while he's not being incredibly athletic the way some capoeristas are, he's tripping his partners up a lot, i.e., he's tricky. That's largely the goal in capoeira, to lie with your body language and trick your partner.
In short, he's demonstrating incredible maturity and confidence in the art. I'd study under him.
Malandragem. So would I.
Bob + Eddy from Tekken
Brings new meaning to Eddy Gordo!!!!! What a beast this man is. Muito Bom!
Bob and Eddy combined
Can't last more than 2 seconds I'd bet. Or maybe not what would I know. Why do I gotta be so negative? Fuck that. Fuck you, past me, this guy is having fun, and doing something cool with his body, let him have that! He's doing it better than you would too!
Will Ferrell could take him
Black Bob
Shaq, is that you
Those poor joints
irl bob
Shaq is in a lot of commercials
Shaquille O'Neal seems to be enjoying his retirement
Thats the real Eddy gordo
Right from Street Fighter 😄 Amazing 👏
Eddy Gordo have gotten fat and spamming the X and O buttons for best combo.
Dam get this guy on mortal combat
my knees hurt just by watching this
The energy it takes to do this stuff must be crazy
Actually insane
Kung Fu panda
Everyone forget sumo are some of the strongest and most fit around. It's not fat that makes you weak it's lack of exercise.
