it's about a lot of different things, but imo, grief definitely is big theme of the album. there are a lot of moments on the album where grief comes in, whether it be about anne frank, a brother, or a baby. i feel like thb pt1 and 2 are the most grief filled songs. to me, pt1 is a very emotional, lamenting, grief stricken song that is about (in my interpretation) a very fresh loss, and i think part 2 is a more calm, stripped down version, where jeff (or whoever the song is from the perspective of) really reflects deeply in his own struggles with grief. pt 2 really takes the booming, overwhelming feeling of fresh loss in pt 1 and turns it into a much more melancholic reflection on the feeling of grief, and the effect it has. i also really like that at the very end of thb pt 2 during the outro, he plays the main verse riff from pt 1 and plays it in a much more toned down, melancholic way. almost like after all the reflection he's done on his loss and how it affects him, he still feels that same fresh wound from it, just slightly toned down with time. that, combined with the last line of "but don't hate her, when she gets up to leave", is honestly a perfect representation of loss and how the feeling of grief changes with time as you move on. sorry i wrote a whole essay lol
the thing about this album is there are so many ways to interpret it that makes it personal to the one person, because of the very strange lyrics, which is one of the reasons why its so popular.
