These things have invaded! Anyone else completely swarmed tonight?
This made me chuckle too much
My windshield has been getting plastered with them. Especially on Vietnam Veterans near Rivergate and 65 between Briley and Trinity.
Same, my windshield is covered in cicada guts from Vietnam Vets
Yep I’ve had enough. Is this 3 weeks of increasing population density? It’s gotta be winding down right? I don’t see how they could get more dense. Entomologists, where you at?
I've read mid-June with a couple of sources 😫
i saw they stop emerging mid-june, they live for 4 weeks so apparently they’ll be here till mid-july.
My kids keep bringing them into the house and trying to save them as pets. My 4 year old found one on our way into target the other day and said he wanted to keep it… “buddy” didn’t make it out of the store, he got squished when my toddler tried to grab a toy.
You should see an arborist about that willow. Trunk looks rough.
Yeah, it’s not doing well at all
They absolutely swarm us at the Airport. The APUs on the aircraft attract them we assume because of the frequency of them running. Thankfully I'm not scared of them but it's still difficult when they're landing on you constantly throughout the day.
Alright yardcare enthusiasts of r/nashville. How are we mowing the lawn these days? I did 20 minutes and almost rage quit after bug after bug kept yeeting themselves into my face. I may buy a mosquito netting hat to at least keep them out of my mouth...
I haven’t gotten dive-bombed this year — must be something about the pitch of the mower engine.
But in high school, I mowed with a tennis racquet in hand. It was a bloodbath, most of which ended up on me. 0/10 idea, do not recommend.
Weed whacking was horrible, but the actual push mower was ok. I could see them flying in and swatted before they landed. Also I have a sun hoodie with a big bucket hat and sun glasses. They still found a way to land directly on my mouth tho haha.
ALSO, apparently while they don't "bite" or "sting", if you let them chill on your arm for long enough they jam their proboscis into you through your clothes and it hurts
Did my lawn today. My mower is electric so it’s not as loud as a gas mower and wasn’t a big deal. But once I started using the leaf blower I was getting dive-bombed every 5 seconds by cicadas. I eventually gave up and just let them land on me until I finished.
No issues using my push-reel mower.
I did okay with an electric mower and weed eater yesterday but last week I was dive-bombed once or twice.
Motorcycle helmet
Literally just ordered my mosquito net hat. Apparently a cub cadet 46” riding tractor gives them a rock hard powerhouse boner
I was using my weed eater earlier today and apparently weed eaters attract cicadas. I was mobbed by these things
I just close my eyes and imagine I'm hearing the ocean waves instead of screaming insects.
If this was what the ocean sounded like I would never go again.
Trying to do yard work on Nolensville today, kept getting them flying around me and landing on my shirt. Wife didn’t believe me, so I told her to come outside, one landed on the front of my shirt, I flicked it towards her and she started flailing her arms around like she was drowning out in the open water.
Has anyone eaten one yet? I was just camping and we tried to cook one but they kept falling through the grate. Wanted that 20 bucks lol.
I read a recipe that said they’re best in the nymph stage? Right when they’re white and emerging from the shell. I feel like these are too small tho. Probably best to try it on the green annual ones?
You know something? I like the cicadas. I am a pro-cicada person. Cicada ally, even.
I was always confused by the term, “circadian rhythm”, i was like, “don’t put that evil on my insomnia Issues!” But I owe a great deal of lucky guessing root words for multiple choice questions on passing tests in school, even if the allusion is wrong in this article.
Same!
They've been flying so thick around Percy Priest today that I can just watch them out of my second floor window. Super cool little dudes!
I live over by Nashboro Village and I have seen a grand total of THREE, all of which have been dead. Idk? I have a ton of big tall trees in my yard, & a big wooded area out back. Maybe it's b/c they are all very mature trees, & they like saplings? I can definitely hear them.
I'm right off Smith Springs, probably not even a mile from you, and they're EVERYWHERE! I also have big trees. It's crazy how much difference a short distance can make!
I think it's bizarre too. I'm a Nashville native so I remember a couple of previous broods. Both places I lived were absolutely inundated with the damn things. I'm not sure why there aren't any over here?
Wonder if the golf course has something to do with it? The way it's maintained, fertilizer, etc?
Update: One of the little fuckers flew straight into my face as I was walking into the Kroger there earlier today. They were hitting my car as I was driving down Nashboro Blvd. Hope you can see some now!
It was so loud today it set off my phone alarm noise warning!
The cicada tree
What area of Nashville? Went through a swarm near Rivergate but next to none south of Brentwood.
McCabe was ripe with them today. Couldn’t get two swings on the range without one flying into me
My first cicada summer was 1998 and still remember the cicadas attacking the lawnmower. 11 year old me did not appreciate it!
Driving in from out of town today was a cicada murder fest
Here in Franklin they’re bad. My neighbor has a db meter and was getting over 80db from them. It’s a crazy amount of noise, and then they dive bomb you. My kids are deathly afraid of going outside now, I have to carry my 3 year old to the car she won’t walk lol.
Dunno why the house didn’t just ban them with chemtrails.
dang you hit, must have been where all mine went.
We haven’t noticed.
Heading to Leipers Fork for Memorial Day. I wonder what my lil doggie is gonna think bout the cicadas!
I just taught my pup to catch treats recently and now she’s catching flying snacks with the efficiency of a cat.
You know I haven't seen too many but I can hear them near my home and they are loud as hell
So was this Nashville, Asheville, or somewhere else? https://old.reddit.com/r/asheville/comments/1cw3ij8/these_things_are_everywhere_tonight_have_you_been/
I'm in Knoxville and haven't seen the first one!! I'm disappointed, they actually help me sleep!!
And now when I’m on Reddit I can’t even escape them 😭😭😭😭😭
The noise immediately gives me a headache
Yes. It is indeed as it was in the days of the Dukes of Hazzard. Strange times indeed.
Fuck em up before they fuck you when you’re mowing
I just let one of the kids mow.
Builds character.
I’m in Bellevue in a small complex surrounded by trees, and they are this dense everywhere around me. I get dive-bomb constantly while walking my dog. At first it was cool, now it feels like a biblical plague.
Franklin and Brentwood there's literally a million of them every 5 feet. Can barely walk our dog
I find their song so beautiful and soothing
He said with enough sarcasm to black out the Sun
Wow, I would have never known that before seeing this post. You are so insightful OP. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Probably waiting in line to get their picture of the angel wings in the gulch
