Danger zone!
Do you want ants? That's how you get ants!
It's just like the gypsy woman said!
Sterling Mallory Archer
“You will eat every bite of that grilled cheese.”
THIS IS SWISS!
I am with Archer on this one, I must say.
Lana. Lana. LAAAAAAANA!
Code name: Duchess
Wait who is that? Because my sons name is Archer and we are wanting to name our next one Sterling if it’s a boy😅
I would watch the show before having a Sterling/Archer sibling set!
Yeah, that's actually a tough one (i would never). The cartoon character is pretty iconic and to have his first and last name as a sibling set, is not great.
Agreed! As much as I found the show to be funny, I wouldn’t want it to seem like I had named my kids after Sterling Archer!
I'd do it. I'm also not fit to be a parent, so take from that what you will.
"You know, I used to pretend you weren't my mother."
"Me too."
I 100% would name my kid after Sterling Mallory Archer 🤣
Does no one google names together?! I ran everything through google to make sure I wasn’t creating an unfortunate pairing 😂
I truly have never thought to but now I’ll have to double check before committing 😂
An extremely unhinged alcoholic spy with mommy issues. I love him! The show is called Archer. I’m not sure if I’d want my 2 sons linked to him though.
I mean, he’s essentially a 2 year old, purely driven by his ID.
So true. I just think one name is a coincidence. Both kids with the name feels like parents are super fans.
He’s the main character of Archer, which is an adult animated comedy. In the show, he’s known for being an alcoholic secret agent and ladies’ man who’s a terrible person (but so is every other character in their own way) and also the greatest agent of all time. I would say it may not be the best set of names to give your kids, considering that the character isn’t supposed to be a good person, but it is a great show.
Ladies’ man, but also a bi king
Oh god I had no idea.
...and if you have a 3rd son, you'll have to name him Bob.
Or Cyril Figgus.
Cy-ril. Fi-ggus. Lol
*Mallory
Or Barry
Well, he is gorgeous!
He is also smart.
And an alcoholic.
And a whoremonger
Dear god watch the show first
Look, Lana! He thinks he’s people!
Codename Duchess
God she loved that dog
Phrasing
M...as in Mancy!
Maup
PHRASING!
My first thought too.
Phrasing!
I know a little boy named Sterling! While it’s not my personal jam, I think it’s a nice name and you should feel proud to choose whatever name you love. Pay no mind to what other people think, it’s not their baby :)
I saw your responses and that you’re located in the South. It does kind of give me cowboy/southern vibes!

I definitely think Sterling is better than Stetson, by a large margin. I actually knew a Stetson in TX... his nickname was "Boot" which stuck from when he was in elementary school (knew him in his 30s). Lincoln I think sounds ok but the NN Link reminds me too much of Legends of Zelda. Out of all of those I think Sterling is the best and will transition well into adulthood.
And with regards to a nickname, my son's nickname has absolutely nothing to do with his actual name. My nickname growing up also had absolutely nothing to do with my actual name. Heck, all of my siblings have nicknames that are totally unrelated to their names, lol.
It's not that unusual to have it happen that way, in my opinion. If the name Sterling calls to you, use it OP.
Our son’s nickname is Meatball…. lol
He’s 4 months and has rolls for days, we will see if it sticks lol.
I grew up in Dallas, and had one female friend named Sterling & two male friends named Sterling, when I was a kid! They were all perfectly nice, well adjusted humans! And none of them had nicknames. They were just “Sterling.” The nickname situation has gotten out of control, IMO. If you intend to call your son by his given name, make that clear right up front, and shut down people who try to rename your child to suit themselves! Your baby, your choice:) Congratulations on your boy!
My little guy is Wyatt and if we were to have another boy, Sterling would be at the top of my list.
I have a relative named Forest, he hears, "I was running," all the time.
I'm a Jenny, so I get the same quote, with "Jenny" tacked on. 🤣
Sounds weird to me as a Brit. Like if I named a child Dollar or Yen.
Don't give Americans any ideas.
We already name our kids Cash… some people get away with it because of johnny cash, I still think it’s strange. My friend’s parents named their Boston shepherd after him.
What is a Boston shepherd?
I meant terrier, I knew it wasn’t shepherd, but I didn’t really care enough to figure out what it actually was.
I’m also British and I agree it sounds a bit odd.
That and names like Hunter! Meeting people with their actual birth certificate names being Jaxon , Hunter, Chuck, Lincoln , Dallas, Brooklyn , Chad….. Then Americans make a big fuss over Irish names like at least they’re actual names and not Chadlynn Brook OJ freeeighdom smith.
For what it’s worth, a lot of us Americans also make fun of Chadlynn Freeighdom and her -Leigh/Lee/Lea/Ly friends

I'm not from the south at all but I like the name Sterling and it's a family name as well so that's a win I would think especially in the south. Can't think of a nickname off hand but I'm sure someone in his life will come up with something at some point. I say go for it!
Fellow Brit, quite like Stirling acutely.
We have (okay different spelling) Sir Stirling Moss!
We’ve got baby 2 on the way and I’ve been pushing it as one of my top boy options but my husband is naaat having it.
I think of Sterling K Brown - great actor, great association!
The Box is my all time favourite episode of Brooklyn 99. Phenomenal actor!
Same, and it's my son's middle name
I think it’s lovely as long as your last name isn’t Archer. There aren’t a lot of nicknames, but maybe you can find a middle name that works for that.

He’s the main character in the American tv show “Archer” It’s a hilarious but naughty animated show (not for kids)

Oh. You may not want to, if it will ruin the name!! 🤣
It's hilariously inappropriate, and Sterling is the titular character for a reason....
Psh. If someone doesn't like that excellent show they don't deserve to use the name (kidding... Mostly)
It might make them like the name more!
It totally might!!!! I just want them to make that decision with open eyes. 🤣
I love Archer and had Sterling on my boy name list because of it
He’s a perfect combination of terrible and wonderful
Please do, it's hilarious.
Well. The first 6 seasons are ;)
I named my dog Seamus after Wee Baby Seamus. He’s HUGE and it’s perfect.
I LOVE that for you.
I'd considered naming a bun Rabbert Klein, ngl, but like I just have a long list of potential names, from everywhere, before I get to puns hah.
However, it IS frowned upon to take them to the lettuce store and I have to go alone.
Don't tell people the name.
When you tell people about what you think you might want to name your unborn child, people think about the name hypothetically. And, especially, they think about whether they would want to name their own child that. Which means most people are going to hate most names, because they are only going to like/agree with the names that happen to coincide with what they would pick.
When you wait to tell people your baby's name after they are born, people will react positively, because at that point they're not thinking about what they would hypothetically name a baby, they are thinking about this cute little person they just met. And what a cute baby this is, with such a cute name.
FWIW, I think Sterling is great. My guess is that because of both Archer and Mad Men, and because folks who were in the demographic for those shows are now having kids, this name will go over well with most people and is probably more popular than you'd think.
I do think you should prepare yourself for the kid to either want or ultimately get a nickname, since Sterling is on the long side. It's no Thelonius, but even so, you stand a real chance of Sterling coming home from day 1 of kindergarten deciding he's only willing to write Earl on his school papers. (Or whatever, I have no idea what a good nickname for Sterling would be.)

I like Sterling. This sub skews too much toward "no that's too weird" imo. Sterling is a fine name. Good, handsome name. If he doesn't like it, he'll go by something else.
I have major regret for not using sterling for my youngest. I absolutely adore the name
Makes me think of Sterling Archer
It’s my son’s name and it’s a family name from my husband’s side…it’s vintage (great x 8) … but becoming more popular in the US.
Patrick Mahomes daughter is named Sterling
Sterling is a character in Cars 3
There are a few actors and professional athletes named Sterling.
And of course Sterling Archer from the cartoon series
Look up “Sterling YourLastname” on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and see how many others share the name… to see how unique it is.

That's a good idea, but it won't tell you how unique it is related to his cohort who won't be on social media for at least a decade.
Very True… if there’s already 20+ now and the name is climbing in popularity- it at least gives you an inkling

I think that Sterling in Cars 3 may have been named after Stirling Moss, who was a famous Formula 1 driver.
That was who I first thought of when you said Sterling, but I'm UK-based and old! I wouldn't worry about the Archer connection too much. If you like the name I'd still use it. I don't think the kids they will grow up with will be aware of the show in the future.

Sterling could shorten to Erl/Earl.
It does make me think of Sterling Archer and Pounds Sterling.
Omg Sterling with the nickname Earl has made me love it even more. I fuckin love the name Earl even if it sounds old fashioned AF
It's not bad, but it's not my favorite. It feels very old man. Who cares that it doesn't have a nickname. It is a real name and a masculine name, so it totally would work for a boy. I do always think of silver when I hear the word sterling, which isn't a terrible connotation.
I mean, to be fair, they don’t stay babies long. Really makes more sense to choose a name for the adult your child will one day be, not the baby that they currently are, if that makes sense.
You're not wrong. I just think of Sterling as a name that was the most prominent in the 1930s-1950s (hence old men). Your point is why I'm so against influencer names.

One of my friend’s name is Sterling, and he’s just a dope dude with chill vibes. He’s confident and as a gen z guy I think owns the name Sterling without it coming across as waspy or hoity-toity. I love the name and I think you should go for it
Love! But I had one in my class this year so had to veto it lol.
But it was on my list!
I love it!
I think of my old favorite Disney Channel actor, Sterling Knight.
Personally I love it, but I think the last name can make or break it - have to make sure it flows right.
My son's name is Sterling.
I'm in Australia so every name gets shortened! He's called Sterls or Sterlo. His Dad and I call him Pearl (rhymes with Sterl).
2 years later we still adore the name and have only had genuinely lovely comments on it. We say it and people pause and then are like that's an awesome name!
Our main criteria was that he had a name that's easy to spell and say when ordering coffee 🤭
If you like it do it. Everyone else can mind their own!
It's my son's middle name and I love it! It's such a strong name. My parents and in laws had the same reaction. It's just not a common name, but not weird. The Archer jokes come up occasionally but nothing crazy.

I went to high school with a Sterling and it fit him perfectly. Seemed unique but never weird or odd.
I think it's cool. It does remind me of Roger Sterling from Mad Men, who was an anti-hero in a way, but showed an interesting growth of sorts over the series (maturing in some ways). It's a slick, timeless classic!
I think of Roger Sterling too! Not the most moral guy for sure but a hilarious character.
I love it
Stop telling people ❤️ their opinions don’t matter anyway. If you love it, it’s lovely; use it! 🤗
I've always loved the name Sterling. I met a Sterling before and he was such a sweetheart.
I like it!! Timeless but not super common. Go with your gut!
I think of Sterling K Brown
Sterling is a minor character in a book I'm reading. He's a great artist. I like the name.
It was my grandfather's middle name, so to me it definitely has vintage feel to it. If you both love it, then go for it. And maybe not tell anyone else the name until he is born! Everyone will have an opinion! 😅
I’m from a not English speaking country and all I can think is the thing you read in rings: Sterling silver 925.
I love Sterling. Sting could be a nickname.
It's not to my taste, but it's not the worst name in the history of names.
I think it's a redneck name trying to be classy but if you like it you like it 🤷. I'm sure there's plenty of people who wrinkle their noses at my kids' names.
I associate 'Sterling' as a first name with the upper middle class or higher. I am also reminded of the characters Roger Sterling of Mad Men and Archer Sterling from Archer and finally, Peter Sterling, former Australian Rugby League International and sports commentator
Sterling Silver. I don’t like it. It doesn’t feel like a name.
It's a great name!
I know someone named Sterling and he wears the name well. He's personable, likeable, and successful.
I had an Uncle Sterling, he was a terrific guy with a warm smile, a big hug and an infectious laugh.
Absolutely hate it. Gives the same vibes as “Maverick”
I have a f cousin with this name! I love it for both boy and girl
Big nope from me.
Oh my god this is in my top five. Extremely handsome sophisticated name and also super unique without being weird. I think the fact that it has no nicknames is the best part lol and your best friend doesn’t have to have the same taste as you it’s not her kid it’s stunning
It sounds a little pretentious to me, but overall it’s not a bad name.
I’m okay with it! I knew a boy Sterling in middle school, and I LOVED the book “Rascal” by Sterling North when I was a kid. (If you haven’t read it, you should. and you should have your boy Sterling read it, too!)
Love it. I’m Scottish and we have a city called Stirling,
It's a great name. Boys don't have a lot of unique names, and I think Sterling is one of the better ones.
Also, my mom had chosen it for her second son (if she ever had one which she didn't because she got a daughter instead).
Dont share the name you choose with loved ones and friends until after the birth announcement.
My youngest son is named Sterling he is almost 3 and we sre so confident and in love with his name what others think doesn't even matter. I'm used to marching to the beat of my drum and have always chosen everything based on my heart (and I'm a big old weirdo, think aesthetics, hobbies, interest being very niche) so maybe that helps? But no one has ever given us negative feedback and I get plenty of strangers gushing over his name.
Just choose what you love and makes you happy the rest falls into place. No matter what you do as a human others always have an opinion, you can lay on the ground and people will complain you aren't flat enough. So go shine and do what makes you happy. ✨️
I think it’s pompous. YMMV or you might be going for pompous.
I LOVE IT!!!! ♥️
I was a teacher and worked with children for more than 20 years. When I first started, I remember a 4th grader named Sterling. He was always in trouble in school, but he was a cutie pie. All the little girls loved him. He loved to skateboard. I worked for 4 different school districts, and he was the only one with that name. I think the name is so different and cool, yet it is strong. Go with the name you love!!! ♥️💋
When I was in college there was a Sterling who came into the health food store I worked at on a daily basis. He had huge muscles and constantly felt the need to tell everyone that his Mom knew in utero that he would be superior (Hence his name). It always rubbed me the wrong way. He was arrogant so it's a naw for me.
Sterling Scott is a rising comedian from Canada and all around super nice guy so I have nothing but positive associations with the name. Its a very powerful name!
My cousin’s name is Sterling he is named after our great great grandfather. It’s a perfectly acceptable name.
It comes and goes out of fashion about every 30 years.
My very 1st ever boyfriend was named Sterling - we were in 5th grade and never even held hands but “went out” for a whole year😂 I hold that name dear to my heart🩷
I went to high school with a guy named sterling. He was nice and we didn’t think anything of his name other than, that’s his name.
It's such a strong & handsome name.
It's annoying how people want to try to change baby names when women are excited for their choices.
My daughter had a classmate Sterling! His parents are delightful and he is…all boy. No one in our social circle thinks is weird. We also have a Maverick in class so we’ve got lots of names full of personality!
There’s a famous nascar driver named Sterling… I think it’s strong and uncommon. Go for it! Don’t tell anyone the names you like.
if your family name is silver you have to do it
I worked with a Sterling a few years ago. He was VERY handsome, educated, chill and classy.
I love the name now!
I think it sounds cool!
LOVE
That is a gorgeous name!
Since when is Sterling a bad name? I think it sounds super cool!
Sterling Moss race driv r
I love Sterling!
I love that name so much! It’s like a set up for success in life. You can be or do anything with an elegant name like Sterling 😊
Not. He’s not a child not a currency. Not Stetson, he’s not a hat and not Forest he’s not a tree. At the end of the day you can name him whatever you want it’s your life but, that’s a child not a dog.
I’m sure there are plenty are southerny Texas type names that are actual names.
Moreover that’s just my opinion, if I heard that name irl I’d probably be thinking phew…Americans but c’est la vie. Good luck with your baby! Hope the birth and all goes well and whatever you name him, he’ll still be a great lil baby!
Ever since Sterling Knight on Disney Channel I've thought Sterling was a gorgeous name, it sounds classic or even vintage, and like it would fit right in in a fantasy setting, but without being too out there.
I personally love it!
Makes me think of Stirling Moss! Awesome name although I prefer the Stir spelling rather than Ster but that's just me
I love Sterling! I don’t know who Sterling Archer is.
My late step-father’s name was Sterling and he was one of the best and most compassionate people I’ve ever known. It’s a beautiful name and I hope your Sterling is just as wonderful as mine was ❤️
Love it! Unusual and gorgeous name for a boy I think.
Planning on naming my little boy Sterling when he comes this summer. My husband and I are keeping it to ourselves until he's here because we're not trying to hear people put down a name that we both love.
My husband is a bit hung up on the lack of nickname potential, but I can see myself calling him Sterling, Ster, or Sting. ( :
I was so happy to see this post! Love Sterling!!
We're thinking Sterling Joseph, what about you? I may call him Ster Joe for fun 😁
I like it! I know a guy named Sterling
Sterling silver came to mind
Honestly, I kind of dig it. I think it sounds kind of like the name of an old cowboy, and to me, that's an excellent thing when naming your child. I love "grown up" names. You want something that's going to suit them their whole lives. I'm actually really surprised that people in your life have disliked it so far. I am not aware of any of the cultural references people have brought up around the name, so I can't comment on any of that, but don't let people choose your kid's name for you. If you love it, use it. I think it's really rude when people show that they don't like someone's baby name. Of course, it's always a better idea not to tell ahead of time if you don't want a negative reaction, but still, I've had people run baby names by me that I thought were pretty bad and I was still like "oh so cute/unique!" just to be polite (in real life obviously because on the internet we love to tear each other a new one over baby names lol)
I like it. It sounds noble and aristocratic.
I love it
Love it!
Makes me think of Stirling Moss. Different spelling, I know, but still a very positive association
At first I didn’t think I liked the name, until I started figuring out why I didn’t like the name and now the name has really grown on me haha ,the only reason I wouldn’t pick it is because I’m Irish & it might possibly raise a few questions why I named my child after British currency. But that is only a small reason & not a big enough reason to dislike the name. I also want to rewatch archer now. Please don’t take on other peoples opinions on the name you like, it’s a very handsome and strong name :)
I love this name a lot 💛 I hope it gets a comeback
It was my late brother's name. I love it. We'll be using it as a middle if this baby is a boy.
Sterling Holloway=== Winnie the Pooh!
I think it depends 99% on the last name.
Something like Sterling Brown/Anderson/Miller sounds good.
Sterling Green/Taylor/Wilson does not, IMO.
I went to high school with a kid named Sterling in the 90's. It's a good name
This is really obscure and specific, so obviously don't base your decision entirely on this, but I took a class in college with a guy named Sterling. It was a Japanese class and the way the teacher pronounced his name, I thought his name was Stalin until I saw it written down, weeks into the semester. So for literal weeks I was like, "WTF kind of parent names their kid 'Stalin'?!?". Anyway, I guess the point is that Sterling might not be a name that would travel well, for whatever that's worth to you.
Sterling Moss was a very successful British Formula 1 driver who’s career was ended by an accident in 1962. He was also knighted by the Queen.
SCOTT STERLING!
It’s actually kinda fire
I like it
I like it.
One of my grandfather's was named Sterling, it's another family members middle name, and it goes back quite a few generations, skipping and hopping around. Might be old fashioned enough to become cool again? It could also theoretically have a nickname "Ing", which is also a name from mythology.
It’s a family name for me and I like it!
As Barney Gumble would say, “I like it!”
I love it! I knew a Sterling, they call him Sterl for short sometimes. It's not a weird name, it's just uncommon. People will get over it. If you love it, use it! People didn't like my 1sts name, so I kept my 2nd kids name a secret until 2 weeks before his birth when it was finalized, and told people "if you want to know his name, it's not up for discussion, it's decided". And of course they agreed before we shared. So even though it was clear they didn't like it, they were much more polite and pretended to like it! You do you!
I personally love the name Sterling for a boy. I was completely set on it until I saw a different name. But the amount of people who told me it was a girls name was annoying. My name is one that used to be mainly for guys so I grew up hearing that & I didn’t want that for him. Nothing against a gender fluid name, just annoying that it was always the first thing people said to me lol
It makes me think of the vintage F1 champ Stirling Moss, spelt differently though, but it's a decent name!
Don’t love it, but I will admit the one Sterling I knew was shockingly attractive. Like wow.
I like it
I love the name
That's my son's name, but spelled Stirling. I always get compliments on it when people hear his name for the first time, even from strangers. I am so glad I called him that, because I genuinely adore his name and it suits him so well. I wasn't sure initially because it didn't have a nickname, but it's honestly been fine.
It's funny to me that so many people have been referencing the show Archer, because I binged that when I was heavily pregnant and that's where I got the name from 😂
.
I think it's a handsome choice Go for it
One of my favourite characters I’ve ever written (I’m an author) is named Sterling! I think it’s a cute name.
I think it’s a nice name and it’s even my exes name so even that doesn’t stop me from thinking it’s nice!
I actually know a guy named Sterling! He always gets compliments on his name!
I think of the actor Sterling K Brown. I like it for a boy! And YOU love it… that’s all that matters ◡̈
The only Sterling I know is my cousin's grandpa, but I like it! Feels classic to me
I loveee Sterling, it was on my list if we ended up having a boy!
Sterling is a distinguished, classic, and mostly unique name. Steelo from Rediculous is a Sterling I like that nick name! But I am partial as I named my son Sterling lol.
Makes me think of Sterling Archer
