Most common lie new potential band mates say when you first talk to them before playing with them?
I hear a lot, “I play it like the record”
Reality, they play what’s in their head and barely can count the changes and/or make excuses about missing them.
Mind you, not all of them but enough to make me not believe someone when they say that.

No shame on anyone for not knowing about ska (lol, or even liking it, hating it is totally fair) but in my experience "I listen to everything" means "I listen to what's around, I do not seek out music."

That they practiced the songs before the rehearsals. My guitar player (longtime friend) has made a habit out of not listening to the recordings, pretending that he did, not doing all that great at rehearsals and needing to have his hand held, then telling me right after we play that he never listened to him like he fooled me 🙄
It’s all good though cause he does alright and he’s my boy. The rest of the guys don’t even do me the courtesy of telling me they never listened, so there’s that lol.

Agree - we'll work with our guys and deal with it. In some way it's kind of important to hold those people close. Life is better with them even if they let us down sometimes lol.
No chance. A band is a business, I've kicked close friends out of my band for not being up to standard (after fair warning)
I see both sides of the coin. I'm at a place in life that a friend for life is greater than the hustle. I've been going through some stuff. Previously I thought exactly as you did - it's a business get your shit together.
And in my case, who I'm thinking of, is musically solid... doesn't miss a beat. Music is never the issue. But has his issues with promotion, marketing, and getting the word out there. I'll take it.

One thing I’ve seen that’s kinda cool tho is when it’s the opposite. When you find someone who listens to almost nothing but one very small niche and if you play a popular song they end up turning it into something else completely due to lack of any sort of familiarity lol.

Holy hell!!! We’ve been talking about his a lot lately. I’ve had an ad out for a while looking for either a singer or a bass player. Now matter what reply I get, it’s always the first thing they ask… “Where you gigging at?” I mean first email/text!!! Not even asking about what songs we are doing or the overall goal…. I’m gonna use your AKA the next time one of them goes that!
I used to be able to play note for note, then got Long Covid; now I can only remember about 70% of a song, even if I practice it 100 times, it will never be the same one play through to another; but it doesn’t mean it bad. I practiced improving a lot to the point I can now hop in on pretty much everything besides Rush or 5’s on time.

Memory issues can occur from many different things, I think the difference between someone who doesn’t practice and one who practices but has memory issues, if they can’t play the song through every time and have to stop mid song to “redo” or start over; VS if they can play the song through perfectly every time in pocket and following the same foundation but might change things slightly as they can’t remember note for note.
I was playing with a guitar player who "couldn't remember this stuff man, my memory sucks I have no memory" but could remember every song that he's been playing for years and actually practiced before.. so, it's not the memory thing as much as it is just not being honest and saying "I don't practice and I am not going to because I don't care about being better."

I do have to say most of the music I listened to as a child and up to the year I got long covid is literally like concrete but then after that is where that transition occurred. I used to be able to listen to a song like 3 times and play note for note, now I’ll just have a foundation to follow but it is never note for note the same. You have to approach things differently, I will never turn down anything musically, just have to adapt it to fit myself.
Also that guitar player makes me sad haha, if practice sounds good, then you aren’t doing it right 🤘

Lol, I don’t take medicine for much besides the worst allergies seasonally so like 2 Claritin a year. No ibuprofen, no acetaminophen, only cannabis and low amounts of it. I’ve done many experiments such as no cannabis, eating only non inflammatory foods but it all leads to the same things; regardless of what I do, the current state of my body is the new normal. I’ve accepted it already and I’m fine with it now, hence why I said I have to practice improv much more instead of note for note. Time is important, so no use wasting it trying to copy the original artwork.
Long Covid does suck pretty bad. It’s like going from 100 and then shifting down like 70% of what you used to be able to do(its like you are at 30%). I am pretty lucky to compared to most people who have it, many can’t even get out of bed or do any physical activity. The best way I can describe it is like, your body instantly peaks oxygen wise once you break a certain threshold, once that happens it’s like you hit a 180-200 bpm activity on the body and your muscles fatigue like you have been doing extraneous activity for 2 hours when it’s only been about 5 mins or less. Dizziness then lasts until you lay down for a period or sleep, also accompanied by lightheadedness and spins like you have been drinking.(you are sober though)
You just have to adapt to this new change, because the world doesn’t care about it. So you have to understand how to move forward and set yourself up for success. It’s been about 3.5 years since mine started and some days are better than others but positive mindset and meditation help; so does expressing the self through music.
As more information comes to light we see more understanding of this thing. It’s mitochondrial in nature so is it any wonder why physical stuff becomes difficult. To use some 7th grade science knowledge, the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, if that becomes damaged, do you think the body is going to react in a positive way? 👍
How about you try taking 1000 IU of D3 per about 50 pounds you weigh and see if you need any claritin anymore?
Guess what? I've been regularly taking D3 all this year, started last fall. Guess what buddy? I only take 2000 IUs and I have had NO allergies this year. No sensitivity, nothing. And apparently this year in NC was "the worst" for pollen. Sure.
I haven't had any allergies at all this year. So, yeah man, you can either keep subscribing to the pharma industry that doesn't make money off of healthy people; or you can get healthy and learn about the vitamins and minerals your body is deficient in because of your diet. Turns out you really don't have "allergies" to plants and pollens the way you've sold on them, you're just lacking D3... Food allergies are obviously completely different.
Entirely up to you which path you take, subsidizing pharma companies for the rest of your life, or being free from them...
Long Covid is as much of a thing as placebos actually improving people's health and lives. That's a real thing buddy. People start taking sugar pills and get the same effect as actual chemical prescription drugs.

For a band doing covers I hear a lot of of "It doesn't matter if it is not exactly right". I have no problem with changing arrangements to accommodate instrumentation and (to a lessor extent) vocals, and I even don't mind making changes on purpose for valid musical reasons. But to just be too lazy to learn and play it right - no go. You gotta know the rules before you are allowed to break them.
