Hannah Waddingham Gives Update on 'Mission: Impossible 8' and Working With Tom Cruise
ArticleI really hate “articles” like this
At least it said anything. A couple times I've fallen for:
Title: BREAKING NEWS! Major details concerning recent developments on <Movie/Game I care about>!
Content: There's been no update since last week, all is presumably proceeding normally.
Happens to me all the time with TV shows. Oh, a new article posted 2days ago? This sounds promising: “there has still been no confirmation on a Season 2”…
Every single Sunday, the News app on my cell runs a headline that says "Is Yellowstone returning to Paramount tonight"? Every damn Sunday. And the article always says "No, not tonight".
“Jack Mehoff added to cast of Tier Jerkers” when the filming has been finished for months and they’re starting up marketing…
Meh. They serve their purpose. If I google the movie a get a quick answer.
and after she will say how Tom Cruise is super passionate about his work and really cares about all the staff on set. She's not going to call him crazy or anything negative.
Surprised they didn't film them back to back tbh
If she shares any scenes with Tom, they're gonna have a hell of a time trying to make him look taller than her.
Thankfully I think they’re pretty much done with trying to pretend he isn’t short lol. I remember they even play into it in Rogue Nation.
Katy O’Brian is in this one anyways so Cruise will look small no matter what
Yah even before that there was a similar short gag in beginning of Ghost Protocol during the prison break. Henry Cavill was also noticeably taller than him in many scenes in Fallout.
Henry Cavill was also noticeably taller than him in many scenes in Fallout.
You don't say....
Isn’t he like 6’6”?
Man, I'm sitting there going "WTF is this guy smoking? Neither Cavill nor Cruise were in the Amazon series!"
Turns out that's the name of one of the M:I movies.
I always assumed that a lot of the forced perspective stuff w/ Cruise is just that it sells better if your hero is some sort of Adonis type, if the love interests are close in height, etc. Not really that different than other costuming/wardrobe.
Hell, there was a Scully Box for X-Files so Anderson would be in the shot w/ Duchovny.
Katy O’Brian is at least around the same height as Tom Cruise. Hannah Waddingham is several inches taller.
Katy O’Brian really didn’t seem much taller than Kristen Stewart in Love Lies Bleeding. Probably only pushing 5’ 5” to 5’ 7”.
Hannah Waddingham looks like she is probably 6’ or gotta be close. So I think she’d be a head above Tom or Katy.
I’ve noticed a shift, in that Cruise is no longer trying to look tall but like an average sized man. He’s firmly going for the perception of being ~5’10, so any female co-starts of that height will likely be presented as significantly taller. He’ll be eye-to-eye with most male co-stars, unless there’s a decent margin to the height, where they’ll also be portrayed as giants.
But the scene from The Edge of Tomorrow where he’s taller than Brendan Gleason has a permanent spot in my memory.
How did they play into it in Rogue Nation?
I believe they are referring to the scene where Ethan Hunt is fighting behind the stage at the opera. The camera shows how much taller the henchman is as he rises above Ethan in a comedic way. The same shot is used in the Back to the Future movies.
Man that was a good movie. The opera assassination scene was especially great
When in BTTF?
This bit: https://youtu.be/HxtTLp0zU4w?t=20
In Dead Reckoning there's a shot where you can see in the reflection of a mirror that he's wearing shoes with bigger heels on them
This is common. Also, he will wear these publicly sometimes too.
RDJ also constantly wears elevator shoes
I'm curious how high tom's lifts were that he's noticeably taller than Penelope in heels
Of course. I'm just saying it still happens in the movies which I personally don't think is necessary.
One day, I expect him to just show up on stilts and act like they’ve always been there.
Yeah in Top Gun, Goose's son towers over him when he's getting in his face.
BS.....
Did you see Top Gun Maverick the scene Maverick and Rooster arguing?
Yep, first scene to come to my mind too. Can't see someone like Dwayne Johnson or Vin Diesel doing that lol.
DJ is legitimately a tall dude though
Or they could just have them sitting down
Or lying down…
Shame! Shame! SHAME!
How far into the background will she stand
Forced perspective, like Elf
Might have to go full Hobbit perspective
Let’s hope McQuarie knows what hems doing. It would be a shame if he got the angles backwards.
He's also going to struggle to compete with her in the action figure arms department.
Right? She was jacked in The Fall Guy
Coupla orange 🍊 crates for TC should work nicely…
they haven't that for a decade and CGI can create 9ft tall blue alien people, why would it be "hard time" for them?
It's a shame really. Dude's handsome as hell, rich, twice my age but 10x as fit and yet he's still insecure about his physical appearance.
I’m not sure how much is insecurity and how much is just cinema.
He typically plays the hero and the love interest, so they lean towards tall and handsome with the portrayal.
It's not necessarily about insecurity but the visuals. You want your leading man to be the tallest biggest etc etc. People associate things subconsciously.
That’s insecurity with barely an extra step.
That...doesn't even make sense. It's just filmmakers wanting to maintain their illusions.
maintain
Not maintaining, creating.
And why do they need the illusion of a man being taller than he actually is?
They had to recast Marty McFly’s girlfriend when they fired Eric Stoltz and replaced him with Michael J Fox. Purely because female test audiences didn’t like that he was shorter than his girlfriend. So wouldn’t put it all on Tom Cruise here. Audiences are very particular with what they want. Like how some male audiences don’t accept a skinny girl can fight a bunch of much larger henchmen. Some women can’t accept a shorter leading male star.
I already explained it above. If you just came online to be difficult cause you have nothing else going on in your life, spare me.
It's not really true, is the thing. Tom Cruise is the same height as Robert Downey Jr, Sylvester Stallone, Al Pacino and only an inch or so shorter than Jason Statham, Robert de Niro and countless others. Yet the reason we think of him as being short, and not those others is because he was never insecure or conscious of hiding it.
Roger Ebert wrote about how a big part of the Tom Cruise 'Formula' is he's always paired with "Superior" love interests. They're almost always smarter, cooler, more qualified, more grown up, etc, than him, and he wins them round by having a heart of gold and being the goddamn best at what he does. And the easiest way to show that on screen, visually? Cast women taller than him, and don't hide it.
Nicole Kidman, Kelly McGillis, Rebecca De Mornay, almost all his co-stars in those early movies were taller than him, and they never shot him as taller because it served the story to make him the underdog. So we started viewing him as short, and as such when he was shot like Stallone, Pacino, etc to make him heroic, we noticed it.
Yeah what is this revisionist thing that Tom cruise has been trying to look taller? He’s never shied away from it like RDJ wearing platform heels everywhere in public.
“Garfield star”
It feels kinda weird to reduce someone to their latest movie, but I guess anything to squeeze in an extra ad for a movie.
“Borderlands star Cate Blanchett” is accurate.
“Cate Blanchett, best known for Borderlands” absolutely is not.
She isn't best known for Borderlands.
What exactly are you confused by?
She is one of the stars of Borderlands, and depending on the context, it is reasonable to refer to her as such.
It is absolutely not the film she is best known for, and it would be ridiculous to imply otherwise.
But like, it doesn't work in any context
Facts.
Used to think these things were ridiculous until I started working in media and realised that the most recent film is the only reason these outlets have access to these interviews - price of entry.
First, I didn't even know there WAS a new Garfield movie. Second, Ted Lasso was an award-winning show. Third, the "Shame" lady has a fandom all her own, some of it pretty intense. I would hate to be the international object of respect, fear, and sex and get introduced as a voice on "Garfield".
I was thinking her latest was The Fall Guy.
She was on the red carpet for the Garfield movie, so it kinda makes sense to call her Garfield star.
Are you an alien ?
The PR flack who scheduled the interview would put the writer in a literal meat grinder if they failed to deliver on the intended promotion for Garfield. Waddington may be more than just “Garfield star”, but that PR person’s job depends solely on promoting Garfield.
This is very normal.
Misread that as "Hannah Waddingham Gives Up on 'Mission: Impossible 8'
Mission: Failed
Same. Lemme go get my readers…. Sigh
She’s a treasure
They are still shooting... Come on, i want Tom Cruise to do some of his other 10 movies, beside Mission.
These movies are just getting better and better
Disagree slightly with Fallout but agreed
You mean Fallout was bad or Dead Reckoning was worse than fallout. Because the latter one makes sense.
I meant fallout was ok
Fallout is the absolute peak of the series
I’m happy I can’t get enough of these movies
Shouldn't the mission be possible by now?
If it were Mission: Difficult, it would be a walk in the park.
I love the sly smile.
At the very least it’s Mission: Improbable.
Mission:Implausible
The last movie didn't complete it though
Never get tired of these movies
I mean.... I would want my government to change out 007s every 30 years.
Hot Take: Tom Cruise is in this photo.
She's going to tower over him
Oh the new date for Tom cruise hope he had enough of this act we know he can’t do anything with women .daughter not his and kidman has kids now …
I remember seeing Simon Pegg doing loads of promo stuff with Tom Cruise a few years ago and it felt like he was really pushing his acting skills to find anything Cruise did that was normal so he could try and make him look better to the public.
He told the same story about Cruise putting on the heated seat in the car and how “hilarious” it was about 50 times in a week, he seemed exhausted by the time the film came out.
I’d love to know the dozens of weird things he was holding back but desperate to tell us about.
Redditor just found out that actors promote their movies 😱
Everyone knows that actors promote their movies. But I think most people don’t stop to think how much of a big deal it is.
For me it only fell into perspective when someone made the comment here: “the promotion budget is usually comparable to the production budget. For the actors, promoting the film is an equal responsibility to making the film”.
um, every actors tells the same stories when promoting a movie. You were just paying attention to Simon Pegg, that's all.
Clearly, these missions are possible since they're on the eighth one already.
I feel like this comment is copy pasted 8 times on every article about this franchise.
Mission Impossible is the Final Fantasy of Super Street Fighter II Turbos.
I don't know, man. If they're on an 8th one, these missions are starting to feel pretty possible.
Not the biggest fan of the MI films, but the last film was the best they have made. I was really taken back on how good it was. I'm kinda excited to see the next one. I hope it comes out in IMAX.
Trash
I think she's wonderful, but, shouldn't be in a MI movie.
It was like when they cast Rami Malek (who I adored in Mr Robot) as the villain in James Bond.
It just didn't fit right.
I thought Rami Malek was a great choice for a villain in a Bond movie but the character he was given was too much of a Dr. No reference and didn't really have time to be fleshed out.
The movie was too focused on the big conclusion to Craig's Bond.
Hot, cheeky, and slightly mysterious British women have been part of the Mission Impossible DNA since the first movie.
Rami Malek wasn't the problem with that portrayal. It was how they executed it.
Nah, she still isn't the right fit.
Lots of folks out here obviously disagree with you, so maybe elaborate. How is she a bad fit?
I'm finding her increasingly annoying.
The missions are very possible.
Dead Reckoning: Part 2 lmao
Tom Cruise is in a sex cult. But he does his own stunts so it’s ok.
I could handle a stunt-sex cult. I have very little going on right now.
Actually yeah, the only thing I care about Cruise is what stunt he is going to do next, I don't give a fuck about his personal life.
Who the fuck watches these movies?
Tons of people? They're triple A summer blockbusters
Let me rephrase. Why does anyone watch these movies? They are soooo incredibly bad.
And what brain worms do the people that watch them have?
Rogue Nation and Fallout are in the top five action movies this century, I think the brain worm is you
Absolutely not. You have trash taste. Good popcorn movies sure ok. Best action films this decade? lol come the fuck on
Terrible take. And it's just your opinion. Others have different opinions.
Yes you have trash taste. We all know
Boomers, Grandpas, People on airplanes.
They really go out of their way to publicize everything they can about Mission Impossible. I will never go watch these movies ever again. The last one was so fucking dumb. Tom is really too old for this.
Waddingham is considered an “older” actress, and she’s 12 years his junior. At this point Tom should be making movies with the rest of the Expendables.
Tom is hard if hearing and his hip sqeaks but he did is nice
A bit topic-adjacent but TIL in another thread that Adam Sandler helped Kate Holmes escape Tom and Scientology by casting her in Jack and Jill, potentially slapping the whole movie together for this purpose. She was able to use the filming to establish a permanent address in NY, where the divorce laws were more favorable for her situation, and use the time away from the Scientology people always with her to meet with her dad and other lawyers. Her dad was instrumental as well. She literally had to run and hide with Siri, and have everything planned without Tom or Scientology knowing.
That’s what I read, anyway.
Except Jack and Jill was filmed in California. You shouldn't believe everything you read on the Internet
bib got Dunkachino'd on.
That’s why I said “that’s what I read, anyway” meaning to take it with a grain of salt. You are right, I can’t find anywhere it says it was filmed in NY.
But Tom Is 💯 definitely in a cult right? Can we all just agree that the guy who does his own stunts and is very superficially charming is in a cult?
People defend Tom the way people defend Michael Jackson. It’s weird to me h the at he has a career still
I've never ever heard anyone say he's not in a cult. People like his movies enough to ignore that he's in a cult but I've never seen anyone try to defend that aspect of his life. In fact it's rare to hear his name mentioned without someone jumping in to point out that he's a cult leader.
Fuck Tom Cruise. His old ass.
I know Reddit loves him for some damn reason smh
"We're just about to start shooting again on Mission, yes,"
That’s pretty much the update
