I love that one. The actual shootout is pretty short but the build up is so intense. Every time I see it I feel like I'm there.
And to me this is actually one of the more realistic ones. The tactical movement and calculated shots instead of going full auto, like some other movies, really make it stand out.
Yes, it’s 100% the buildup. When those guys realize its on and jump out of the cars, you immediately know what the outcome is going to be. You just know in your mind “these guys are about ruin some people”
Con pas
"Welcon to Juarez"
I’m not an expert at all but my mate is a trained soldier and he says the suppression at close range is pretty spot, target location at speed and use of short concise, overwhelming force. Also their barrels are slightly more declined when fired to avoid stray shots going somewhere they should (civilians). Very well researched and very intense.
Yeah it's nice but not nearly as hardcore as the ambush scene in Mexico in Sicario 2. They straight murder all kinds of motherfuckers. After the predator drops munitions on the dudes sending rockets at them. Then they lay waste to the cops that show up. Then roll out and waste two more trucks full on the highway. That's hardcore.
Unforgiven the bar scene at the end.
“You’d be William Munny outta Missouri! Killer of women and children!”
“….yeah. I’ve killed women and children. I killed just about everything that walks or crawled at one time or another. And I’m here to kill you, Little Bill...”
(Thunder crashes)
As a Missourian, I’m always full on “Fuck yeah!” at that part.
For what you done to Ned.
I actually didn’t include that line in case people hadn’t seen the movie:)
Love this mention. As far as tenseness it’s off the charts. Bullet for bullet not so much
Possibly authentic though
That’s why I love it. It’s the culmination of Little Bill’s monologue he gives when English Bob is locked up. Guys panicking, fumbling, some staying cool-headed, some getting lucky.
I’m the same vein, I loved the one-on-one sword fight in The King between Henry and Percy Hotspur, it’s awkward but authentic.
"Well he shoulda armed himself."
Or
"Ya'll wanna clear outta there."
"Yessir."
"All I can tell you is who's gonna be last."
"Any sumbitch takes a shot at me, I'm not only gonna kill him; I'm gonna kill his wife. And all his friends. Burn his damn house down. Nobody better shoot."
"He should have armed himself if he's gonna decorate his saloon with my friend." My favorite line from this film
"Deserve's got nothing to do with it."
The bar scene from Inglorious Basterds was also a pretty solid 10 seconds
Deserve’s got nothing to do with it
I’ll see you in hell
Yeah
I’ve always been lucky when it came to killing folks…
I was building a house
Kid… we all got it coming
Classic
Hell, it even features a certain someone we see in the attached scene!
I was lucky in the order, but I've always been lucky when it comes to killin' folks.
The Matrix!
The lobby scene absolutely blew my fucking mind as a kid 🤌 and the song choice? Fucking incredible.
“Spybreak!” - Propellerheads
Had the OST on CD and wore that thing out, so good!
Don't forget Prodigy - Mindfields!
Incredible tune. I still jam that soundtrack!
Yeeeees, so fucking good and it fit the scene so good.
Coined the term and concept of “bullet time”. Literally changed movies forever. The Morpheus rescue might be the best action sequence of all time. Man, I love that movie!
Didn't blade do it first?
It actually did! And I’ve made this point before. But the difference is, the concept encompasses The Matrix as whole and makes sense in universe and adds to the story/plot. In Blade, it was a one off neat feat the Blade performed.
But yeah, it’s super cool I’m not the only one that has thought about this.
Blade was the first time it was used to explain an in universe phenomenon, ie the superhuman reflexes of vampires.
The Matrix was using it to the same purpose. You just aren't going to use too many gun effects in a movie called blade. Matrix used it more often, but the plot point is the same.
Neo asks Morpheus, “what are you trying to tell me, that I can dodge bullets?”. This absolutely resonates with the story. First we see the Neo performing the bullet limbo. He does, semi successfully. Hinting at his abilities. Then when he is actually gunned down by Smith, we see him rise again like Morpheus says, “you won’t have to.” The use of bullet time in the movie directly corresponds to the abilities inside the matrix. Showing Neo’s evolution through his bullet time abilities is key to the entire movie and arguably the apex representation of him being the One.
In Blade, it was just a demonstration the Blade was fast.
Dodge this
Heat
The sound alone in heat….
When Pacino drips Sizemore and they do the close-up on the Rolex 👌
Yep. Not even a close second can be found
Hard Boiled
The last forty five minutes is one long fantastic gun battle. The end of The Killer is a close second. Heat hold third. To close out I go with a classic with the absolute carnage of The Wild Bunch. Special mention to Clint holding off an army of Nazis in Where Eagle Dare.
Hard Boiled for the win.
Ronin and Way of the Gun come pretty close.
Replace the bows and arrows with guns and the revenant has a shot
Even the sound design, no other shootout comes close.
Came to say, fleeing the bank robbery scene. At Max volume.
Came here to say Heat. Amazing scene.
Still the scene I test my surround sound to 👌🏽
Pack it in. Conversation over.
Until someone commits to realism the same way Mann did for heat, nothing will top it.
All of hard boiled.
Edit: also the shootout from heat.
Hard boiled. The cheesiest, most 80’s action movie I’ve ever scene with the best, most wild action set pieces imaginable.
Huge body count? Check! Hard ass dual pistol wielding protagonist? Check! Reloading? Nope! All that AND a saxophone solo!
Edit: excuse me. CLARINET solo!
This should not much higher, the tea house scene alone…
Edit: should BE much higher!
Open Range has a great western shootout. I saw it in the theatre and the sound design was fantastic. It has that same booming feel that Heat has.
Dude, this is a top ten western and don't see it mentioned enough. I love the no nonsense shooting and deaths in this one.
“You the one killed our friend?” “Yep, shot the boy too” BAM
The guy that played Dumbledore makes such a damned good villain in that one
Yep, Open Range is a really underrated western.
It doesn't get mentioned enough. I feel fortunate to have actually seen it in the theater. Great experience.
“Men are gonna get killed here today Sue, and I’m gonna kill ‘em”
Great movie
The way Charlie Waite walks up to the posse is so imposing and gets me on the edge of my seat every time.
Dude kicks a hole through a wall to get to his next target. Talk about butch!
I was about to post the same.
Damn cigar got me riled up.
While I don’t agree with it being the best shootout (Heat), I first saw Open Range on my first DVD and 5.1 surround sound system. When Costner shot the sign in the bar with the shotgun it sounded incredible! Great movie and sound design.
The close range shoot out around the horse trough. Also, didn’t expect the main young bad guy to buy the farm so soon
Came here to say this. Probably the most realistic gunfight in a western movie I have ever seen. Good use of cover, ambushing, backshooting. It really is a vicious, no holds barred battle with little in the way of honor in the execution of it.
True Romance is one of the best to me.
This is what I'm here for. SO many people have not seen this amazing film with an absolutely spectacular cast!
I haven't watched it in ages. I wonder if it still holds up.
It absolutely does. I watched it for the first time last year and it's one of my favorite movies now.
You know I like you, Clarence. Always have. Always will.
What's a Drexel?
...you're so cool...you're so cool...
You’re so cool. You got here first.
Edit: Fav movie of all time.
I was wracking my brain to think of the Patricia Arquette/James Gandolfini scene had any guns in it. If it does I would nominate that scene as best fight scene ever.
That scene is unreal, Gandolfini’s smirk after he hits Arquette to start the fight is sinister.
Don’t forget Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken . That’s a real good scene too.
She shoots him with a shotgun.
....I think.
Stabs him with the a corkscrew, hits him with a toilet, and then shotguns him.
The famous Predator deforestation scene should be on the list
Not a thing. Not a fucking trace. No blood, no bodies... We hit nothing!
Hell yeah
The bank robbery gone bad scene in Heat. Next question.
I’d say the Fenway robbery scene in The Town could be on that list.
This is an underrated scene and movie in general
Only movie I have ever seen with a convincingly menacing florist.
Scene from Raid where bad guys are shooting through the door while the good guy is chopping the floor with an axe to escape.
Exactly. I was looking for a clip on YouTube to drop here. When he just obliterates that dudes face it's so insane.
Raid Redemption is way better than most mentions here.
Great film. The antagonists are insane and the stakes as high
I know it's not as exciting as the others mentioned but I like The Good, The Bad and The Ugly's final showdown.
Why did I have to go this far down to find this. GBU’s showdown scene is ICONIC. Cinematographically beautiful, an incredible climactic payoff of the plot, and awesome physical acting from three amazing actors.
The music is so damn good too. Gives me goosebumps every time I watch it.
The ending of 3:10 to Yuma 2007
The bar scene from Inglorious Bastards
The final act of Rambo 2008
Inglorious Bastards definitely. 3 glasses!
drei Tassen !
3:10 to Yuma is a nice call.
The "chunk chunk" of the steam train...
The cold stare...
Shot 1...2,3,4,5,6...ending his gang
takes Ben Forster's own gun and kills him with it...
"chunk chunk" "chunk chunk"...of the train...
The final act of Rambo 2008
This was amazing. Just angry grunts and 50 cal and exploding entrails.
Rambo just making hamburger for 20 minutes. Glorious.
No one gives that Rambo any credit but the gun violence was so over the top it was glorious.
Pretty much the entirety of Leon: the professional
Get me everyone.
What do you mean ev...?
EEEEEEEVERYOOOONE!!
I DONT HAVE TIME FOR THIS MICKEY MOUSE BULLSHIT!!
You don’t like Beethoven….
He's a Mozart fan.
Most of Black Hawk Down comes to mind.
By far the most realistic. Outside of war movies Heat is good too. Both movies had US Army advisors, which is noticeable in the “bounding,” where one fire team member shoots while his buddy moves, then covers/alternates. Fun to see some realism in an otherwise ridiculous industry.
To me, BHD was one of the first military movies with realistic gunfire sound effects. I don’t understand why it’s hard to get that sound right.
Is it one of those things where people have come to expect a certain sound so the studio chooses not to make it real? Kind of like how movies add those clicks and clacks when even a hand gun is waved around because the audience believes guns make those noises…
Black Hawk Down firefights are so good and realistic. Also love all of the choreography in Lone Survivor
Gordon and Shughart are two BAMFs and I want an M14.
Tombstone
"Ah hell Doc, I was just playin'."
"....I wasn't."
When Wyatt sees his eyes and says, "ah gawd." Love that scene.
winks
lots good on this list but this should be higher
Shoot ‘em Up
I love how it’s basically a live action Looney Tunes cartoon. Absolutely bonkers and insane, but all the better for it’s complete lack of giving one shit about reality. 😂
At the time it was such a breath of fresh air. The action movie seemed out of style and not being done much and then that showed up in my life 🤩
"My God... do we really suck, or is this guy really that GOOD?!"
The end of The Way of the Gun was pretty solid
Such nasty, messy, chaos. Glad to see it mentioned.
1: Bank Heist in “Heat”
2: All of “Black Hawk Down”
3: Lobby Shootout in “Matrix”
The are you flanking me scene in Wind River, might not be the best, but has the most tension.
I was curious to see if anyone would bring up Wind River. Agreed not the “best” compared to real action movies, but the buildup in that scene made me feel sick and the cynicism of it stuck with me for a looong time.
Final shoot out in The Wild Bunch. It’s the cloth from which every other shootout scene is cut; nothing else has the same intensity and impact.
The Rock. The ambush in the shower room.
Lots of great mentions so far but this was the first that came to my mind. The tension before with Ed Harris telling them to stand down is so good
"We're up here, you're down there!"
That’s exactly what this scene reminded me of
Edit: brutal scene
“STAND DOWN!”
“I WILL NOT GIVE THAT ORDER!”
“STAND DOWN CAPTAIN!!”
“I CANNOT GIVE THAT ORDER!!”
God so fucking intense, and tragic. Edward Hummel is one of the best protagonists in movie history. Honorable intentions, never actually planned to go through with the threat, all for a just cause, just the wrong way of doing it.
Also, Ed Harris played him perfectly, he has such command authority on screen. Loved his short scenes in Top Gun: Maverick.
And of course, Gene Kranz in Apollo 13.
The way his voice cracks when he says “STAND DOWN CAPTAIN!” Ugh. Rough scene
I was literally thinking the same thing writing that, could hear the little voice crack as I typed it.
I've always said that movie without Ed Harris is a disaster. With him, it's the best Michael Bay movie ever made. He sells the entire plot.
Red circle John Wick
district 9 end scene
Kingsman church scene
The Wild Bunch — Epic, classic
The Untouchables — The stairwell scene with baby carriage. No sound other than a ticking clock. Excellent.
That showdown in The Wild Bunch is absolutely fantastic.
I watched Untouchables the other day, and that scene, I actually laughed out loud at the end, at George Stones lines. Love that scene
You got him?
Yeah I got him.
Fantastic!
Final scene, Equilibrium with Christian Bale.
The part where OJ almost spikes a baby like a football in the background gets me every time.
https://youtu.be/nr2GeWiDrdY?si=_jh81RqJvDWb8bgX
Thought you meant this one
Boondocks saints; "yew and yor stewpid focking rope," scene.
The scene in Resevour Dogs. Must’ve rewound it 50 times to find out who shot whom.
“Stop pointing the gun at my dad” Nice Guy Eddie
Such a good line!
Anytime Bruce Willis has his guns in Last Man Standing
Just rewatched this last week. I found that i still love it as much now as I did in the 90's.
The movie is awesome in how it feels like a chapter out of a larger more epic story…and I absolutely want to see that bigger story.
Action wise: Probably the big shootout at the end of Django Unchained
Best because it’s so sad: Southpaw
Unforgiven. The final shootout in the saloon.
Autocorrect spanked you.
Hard boiled
The Three Amigos
Raid & Raid 2… while heavy mano y mano, some fireworks in there as well
Commando. At the end when he’s killing everyone at that base. Very realistic.
I loved how 'real' the gunfights in john wick feel. Specifically thinking of the nightclub scene from the first one
Yeah I like when he kills all those guys in his house at the beginning. When he’s struggling to get that knife in the guys neck after he disarms him is intense
Unforgiven.
Tombstone's shootout at the ok Carrol. It's actually accurate to the bullet based on eye witness accounts.
Any John Woo film.
I am saving this post so I can YouTube them all later
What's this from?
Enemy Of The State (1998)
Thank you!!! Wish people would say in their posts
I know right? Had to scroll way too far down for this.
Scarface ending
The car chase and the climax of Children of Men.
That’s Gary Busey’s kid.
Jake. Better known for his role in Starship Troopers.
The shootout in Django Unchained that takes place in the house. Blood splats on the wall, peoples arms get blasted off, pretty cool stuff.
Aliens. When they breached the perimeter through the ceiling crawl space!!!
Heat
Wind River
The Magnificent Seven (new one)
Open Range
The Town
Needs more shaking
Heat… none better
Face/Off
In the airport hanger.
Inglorious bastards the bar scene in the basement
True Romance.
The final shootout in WRATH OF MAN where they are back in the Depot was pretty badass too!
That lobby scene in The Matrix fucking rules
The sound design for the alley shootout in Collateral is really good
Open Range
The ambush in Ronin is a personal favorite of mine
The catacombs scene from John Wick 2, by far the most realistic shooting and weapons handling I’ve ever seen directed
May not be the “best” but the gunfight at the border crossing in Sicario is pretty hardcore.
