That is the temperature of the surface that the thermometer is pointed at. Air temp is different.
Pointing it at your steering wheel will show a much higher temp than the ambient temp. Still hot as fuck tho!

Yes. Originally it was for keeping driving gloves in, from the days when a car was literally just a horseless carriage

I keep a set of gloves in the cabin for driving, and another set in the trunk because everything in there is also too hot to touch
