The sheer number of toothpaste choices
And all are the top best brand of whatever country this is in. And all clean out 99.9%germs
There are a dozen countries that use $ and ¢ symbol but the use of english language points to me its either US, Canada, or Australia. Canada is slighly less likely as they started using C$ to distinguish themselves and sometimes throw in some french canadian. I have no idea what Australia is up to these days those rascals. My vote is US. AIM toothpaste is a slighly lesser known brand produced by a a US company. So that is a strong indicator. There are no local brands from other countries. With toothpaste its difficult to perform cost analysis to find out which state specifically but these prices are close to the national average so we can rull out super low cost of living states like those further south. We can likely also rule out super high cost of living states like northeastern coastal states. Im going to guess a midwestern state. I couldn't find any other marketing material and their price labels are super generic.
Can confirm we dont use the cents symbol here and those price tags don't look like any of the major supermarkets here in Australia.
Turns out, 9 outta 10 dentists recommend using toothpaste.
Who is Madlad 1 out of 10, though?
According to a commercial I saw.. that 10th dentist has a squirrel crawl up his pants
Turns out they're a Prosthodontist
My dentist told me literally all that matters is fluoride. They’re virtually all the same if you look at ingredients.
4 out of 5 prefer cool mint flavor
Yeah, who is that tenth dentist, who never recommends toothpaste? What's she promoting? Chewing bamboo?
You're infuriated by choice?
Ikr!! I love variety! The more the better.
I mean I don't care about that, I'll take the one that looks the coolest to me at that specific time or the one that my dentist recommended haha But variety promotes competition and that's pretty much always good for the consumers.
Yessir
You listen to your dentist's recommendations? Y'know your dentist makes money from you having bad teeth, right?
Yeah, but I’d much rather listen to you if only you had something to say
I'm not a banana.
You’re not far either
He makes more money for longer and less work if you have good teeth.
Clearly my joke has gone over a lot of people's (simple) heads.
This isn’t choice. It’s the illusion of choice. Pretty big difference.
Mildly
I stood there forever not finding the one I wanted (straight up classic colgate). It's far too much and totally unnecessary
Well they wouldn't be there if people didn't buy them. The market is self-regulating itself. What you have a problem with is not choice, it's probably patience.
Don't try to give excuses, those shelf are definetly excessively filled with toothpaste, more than the average supermarket
Scarcity is a lie
I feel sorry for you
Scarcity is a lie
Nobody mentioned scarcity, but okay. You do you I guess…
And so is anyone who ever called you smart
Cope
It seems you're the one coping, can't even come up with another message so you just copy and paste your first one
Seethe
Move to cuba,Cuba, you want have so many to choose from.
So you want fewer choices but you'd still want that classic Colgate. In other words you want less of what other people like, while retaining your own things.
Well yeah, fuck everyone who isn’t me
Omfg are you for real? I'd use whatever the fucking option is! I use plain fucking Colgate!! I don't need the needy little particular special varietal option tailored perfectly to my weak coddled little baby mouth!!!
You don't want the toothpaste that's carefully tailored to other people's situations, instead you must have the toothpaste that's carefully not tailored to anybody in particular. Got it.
They're all the fucking same and you know it. It's a veneer of choice
You seem to make a big deal out of all toothpastes being the same for someone that apparently spent a whole lot of time looking for a specific brand and type of toothpaste.
Frankly I think you're right. I'm a little shocked everyone's downvoting you. All this "it's what da market do naturally" and "they're actually highly specific for different people" arguments are bullshit lol. I've wasted an hour sitting in a toothpaste section trying to find out the difference between nearly fifteen different Colgate's and sensodynes.
Bruh what? Look, there are people who don't like the toothpaste u buy, so they buy another brand/flavour. Just bcoz there are many choices doesn't mean u gotta buy them all. I love choices.
I know someone who will only brush with cinnamon flavored toothpaste
You’ve never tried 95% of the options here. And for good reason. That’s the point of the post.
You probably enjoy when you’re working through an automated receiving system for a phone call and each number option sounds close to the same, but there’s 10 within each menu so “you have more choices”. Sadist
The point is that I like the 5% while someone else likes a different 5%, and then that other person prefers these 5%. And so on. Then add I'm Allergies. If there were only like 10 total options I'd be upset. I don't like anything with baking soda or peroxide, I avoid whitening. I prefer mint.
We are ALL different and we all want different things. I shouldn't be forced to suffer through gross toothpaste because looking at options and choosing one for yourself seems to give you anxiety.
I'd disagree. It's just too much
I love how you’re being attacked for making a very reasonable observation that this goddamn selection is fucking absurd. How many different formulas does Colgate need? Seriously.
THANK YOU!! God, I feel like I'm going insane!
I’m loving the whole “Hey this is Capitalism, don’t you want options?” as if having 30 different Colgate brands makes me feel any sense of real freedom.
America wouldn't be a free country without 32 variations of Colgate which all do basically the same thing
What would we be without 32 Colgates? Communist Cuba???
Yes, we would be just like stupid commie russia
Oh thank God I found you. Was going crazy in this comment section.
I know someone who will only brush with cinnamon flavored toothpaste
Over 50% of these are Colgate too. Why the fuck does there need to be this many choises? I get like a few different flavors or types but this is way too much. If you don't already have a preference, it's going to take forever to go through all the options to see what's different about them.
Thank you for understanding
When I encounter something this excessive I usually get slightly agitated and leave without buying anything lol
Should be maybe 3 options. Sensitive, regular and whatever their “Ultra” toothpaste is. I just want standard basic toothpaste and it’s hard to find. Most have crap like whitener that’s isn’t good for your teeth.
People ignoring the real issue here, which is the environmental impact of "excessive choice".
100%
My mouth breaks out with classic toothpaste. I’m glad there are sls free choices in multiple flavors.
Lmfao why is everyone so mad at you for this?
Too many choices can definitely be annoying at times.
I don't know!!!!! These people fucking love toothpaste!!!
No. We are just on you because you don't like have free choice
People start to post quite a few pictures here that are appearing to me like they are the opposite of the sub.
"Oh no, variety"
This isn’t variety. It’s the illusion of variety. There are maybe 3 different actually varieties here if I’m being generous (Regular, Whitening, and Sensitive teeth) , and even they are barely different from one another.
Are you sure? I can spot toothpaste of five different companies on first glance, plus quite some variations. Seems like variety to me. A certain toothpaste type from one company isn't identical to the same toothpaste type of another company.
And to be honest, you probably don’t even see five DIFFERENT companies represented here. You see 5 different brands owned by maybe 2 companies.
I still don't see the issue. People like them, people buy them. And for the people who don't care which one they buy, this shouldn't be problematic in any way.
It’s problematic in the waste it produces, for one.
It is in literally every way that matters. You spot five different companies all selling the same 3 types of toothpaste with no discernible difference between them.
Taste, quality, price and ingredients play a role for some people.
Also, it's quite a free market. They wouldn't be there if nobody would buy them.
And besides that, what is the problem? If they're all the same to you, why bother because they're not all the same?
I never said brainwashing a consumer class into believing this fake “variety” is the sign of a healthy market wasn’t successful.
Lol i work in a pharmacy which has the same section, same 'variety'. 99% is either regular whitening or sensitive. 1% without fluoride. Ilusion of variety
I was mildly infuriated, is that not the point of the sub?
So variety is bad?
Not when it's reasonable. I happen to find this to be too much. Again, I was mildly infuriated. You don't have to be. Maybe I should take this over to r/unpopularopinions?
Yes definitely
Have you considered the environmental impact of too much variety?
If you fill an entire shelf with toothpaste, then I'm really not sure if it makes a huge difference if it's all the same toothpaste or multiple different ones.
It would actually make a pretty significant difference if you factor in the environmental impact of transporting all these varieties from different locations all across the country and globe.
It's Peroxicare. The basic Peroxicare.
That's all ya need.
Yeah good ol’ no frills Arm & Hammer
It's Peroxicare. The basic Peroxicare.
That's all ya need.
99/100 dentist recommended
just pick one
The fluoride hurts my pineal gland, causes brain sand, destroys my intuition only leaving analysis so I can reason that everything is fine and this is how I should think as I fall in line, obey, and sink into consumerism.
Somebody who works at Colgate once told me that the only difference between them all is branding / packaging. The only version with different ingredients is the ‘sensitivity’ one. As long as they have fluoride in it, the difference is negligible and simply a marketing ploy.
CAPTIALISM BREEDS INNOVATION WHICH IS WHY YOU NOW HAVE THE ILLUSION OF CHOOSING BETWEEN 52 OF THE EXACT SAME THING
I feel like people forget that this sub is “mildly infuriating” not “I can’t believe this, this has ruined my entire year. I can no longer live with this.” OP wanted a kind of toothpaste and they had to search through an obscene amount of toothpaste, imo that is a great example of something mildly infuriating.
And they're all pretty much the same. The best toothpaste iI ever used is prescription toothpaste from a dentist, it made a noticeable difference in the strength of my teeth.
Colgate needs to chill the fuck out over here.
And none of them are any good either. The rest of the world has caught on the fluoride toothpastes are useless. I order n-Ha toothpaste online now and my enamel is actually COMING BACK. I used to have yellow sensitive teeth and now they’re nice and white and I can eat ice cream again.
Finniest ting is they all have same ingredients... Go get a natural one without flouride
Ya know, I really should
You picked the wrong toothpaste and have died of disentery.
This doesn't seem infuriating just somewhat arbitrary, Although I suppose that is where the "mildly" kicks in
You must be the dentist that doesn't recommend the others!
All that just so I can grab one Colgate baking soda and peroxide for $2 Lol
Here in Finland there's a lot of discussion about soon-to-be shortage of grain. Can't stop thinking that maybe if there wouldn't be 300 kind of breads in stores, a lot of them going to waste, that topic wouldn't even be necessary
Bread is an excellent example! I'm sorry to hear that
OP is the perfect example for the paradox of choice. More choices leading to less overall satisfaction.
I’m so afraid of making the wrong choice I will just leave and not get any of them lol
I’m so afraid of making the wrong choice I will just leave and not get any of them lol. I will have to sleep on the decision
Boy are you in for a treat when you hit the cereal aisle
I literally walked out with only toothpaste and cereal
Just go sit in the corner and cry over too many choices.
No you
No you what?
NO! YOU GO SIT IN A CORNER AND CRY YOU FUCKING DOPEY CUNT BITCH. SUCK A FUCKING EGG YOU FUCKING PORKLOIN
Op i am with you. I work in a pharmacy and i agree with you. The shampoo section is also similar
Wow. Not what I was expecting. Y'all are so needy. We're talking about toothpaste here ffs! I couldn't imagine needing such a choice for something so simple. It could be SO SIMPLE
Capitalism has brainwashed people I the U.S. into thinking that choosing between 80 types of toothpaste is not a complete illusion. Like, there’s at best 3 actually only different types of toothpaste here, and the rest is just packaging. Plus, I’d wager about 2 companies own every single brand on this shelf, to boot. Most people are so dumb they don’t see beyond “Ooo, colorful and shiny.”
Yes! And not to mention, they're paying more for it!
If you want simple maybe just order a whole case of your brand off Amazon. Then it'll be year or more before you have to face this hell.
I don't use Amazon. But thank you, this whole experience has been hell
Aren’t you glad to live under American capitalism? You’ve got multiple choices of toothpaste from the same two or three brands! No affordable healthcare, no, but oh boy have we got multiple types of toothpaste
My insurance covers prescription toothpaste, but not blood pressure medication. That's how important toothpaste is.
Thank you, kind sir! I was unaware we have a healthcare issue and it is directly tied to Big Toothpaste!
Considering you only get 1 set of teeth your whole adult life & they're the first thing people see when you open your mouth, I'd say having this much selection is pretty good idea. Some people need different types of tooth pastes... the different brands are for different types of gums & teeth.
Gotta quit your job and devote your life to choosing toothpaste, I guess
https://twitter.com/calvinn_hobbes/status/1270853322942095362?s=21
This strip lives in my head every time I go to the grocery, and as I’ve gotten older, I am 100% on Calvin’s dad’s side.
I don't really see how this is infuriating
Complainer
I like the Colgate charcoal
Mix them all together.
OH! Then swim in it!
and yet they dont have my toothpaste....
colgate winterfresh, one of the oldest types, same as my grandfather used.
The picture is rather exaggerating the real choice. Most of these toothpaste are stacked two or three times next to each other and offered in different sizes or combo packs. In reality, there are maybe 25-30 types on sale here.
Far from "too much choice" if that even if a thing.
I use old man toothpaste - Sensodyne. Last time I had to buy some, I counted 11 different types. On their website, they show 17 different variations. That’s one brand only.
Irrelevant. 25-30 is still too much! They all do the same thing!
Do you think the same thing when you're in the chips isle? They got at least 50 different bags of chips there and they all are chips and do the same thing.
It’s true - the downsides of having too many choices are real. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overchoice
The fact that you think this is mildly infuriating has made me mildly infuriated.
Why is this mildly infuriating? You should be so fortunate to live in a country with so many choices.
Omg samee I hate having extra choices in life
Four out of dentist recommend
It's easy choose the one 9 out of 10 doctors recommend
Unless you use Aquafresh (me).
buy one of each, then mix them together in a giant vat.
I've always thought that if there's all these things that make one better like whitening and cavity protection or sensitivity... why the fuck are there shittier versions?
I mean, each choice is several boxes wide, so you really only have about 25 choices here. Lots of places only have the most common ones so it's nice to have some variety.
It's not like you can't just select your old standby.
Well no, there are about 3 actual choices here. These rest is literally just packaging.
Ben is gay in the bottom left
I use the bottom right toothpaste
OP is a soy boy and can’t handle beautiful American capitalism
Soy? This is toothpaste
If ya want a recommendation: Crest Gum Detoxify.
Foams easily, doesn't burn your mouth, has a good flip cap.
Tasty on a sandwich.
if i only owned a few more teeth that is
Then you look up who owns who and they all have the same master.
Y'all get mad over anything
Does it overwhelm you or something?
No. It's wrong on an existential level
"oh no! I have a vast variety of toothpaste to choose from!"
And they all do the same thing
But is it enough fluoride
You could literally say this about about any product ever. Going to a grocery store must be a nightmare for you. Unless you’re only buying vegetables and meat, there’s 1000 types of everything.
Where is this? They have the one I want and can never find
I hear if you goto Russia you’ll stare at an empty shelf.
Reminds me of a milk advertisement we have here lol.
Low fat no fat full cream high calcium high protein soy... light skim omega 3... high calcium with vitamin D and folate or extra dollop?
Paul’s smarter white milk. Smart choice.
Most are free ot close to it with coupons
“Yeah bro we live in the freest country on earth, just look at how much choice I have”
This is what people are talking about when they say that capitalism breeds innovation. Not the sort of innovation that can keep everyone housed and healthy... But hey we get 100 similar varieties of toothpaste owned by 2 different parent companies.
Even more infuriating is they don’t carry my brand, which is typical. Have to get it off Amazon.
Listerine toothpaste
9 out of 10 dentists recommend each one.
