Do I clean it up and resell for indoors, I don’t have the space, I don’t think. Or could this be used outdoors if I put grille high heat paint on it?
Thanks in advance

If you could use the money I would refurbish and sell it for indoors use. They are rare around here.
these are expensive, I’ve seen them go for thousands in good condition. OP should sandblast and repaint it.
Depends on how rusted through it is. Sandblasting could ruin it further.
It is too shallow to safely use indoors for burning wood. People retrofit them with electric fake fireplaces for indoor use.
Good points here OP.Not just any paint e.g.is safe to use when containing fire.
Seconding this. People would pay
Can be cool. This one was too nice, so we sold it.
We stuck an electric heater designed to look like fire logs in ours and parked it in our living room.
Repair it a red or some other semi bright color that is glossy

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.
Good bot.
Get it cleaned and powder coated a color you love. Add some gas fire logs and be happy. I’d love to have it for my home.
We're they originally powder coated or enamel coated?
I'd love to own one.
Edit: typo
Good question. Probably enameled.
Make sure to use hi temp paint when you do paint it
Check with local laws regarding specifications of having it indoors. I'm not an expert but I remember touring a few MCM homes with those, and they couldn't be used bc they wouldn't pass inspection. Don't know why, but check first. I think they're so striking and beautiful, especially with a nice glossy paint job.
I have an orange one that’s been outside for decades. Works well.
Redo it and don’t let it die outside
we had one exactly like this (it was bright orange) in the basement of the house i grew up in. when we moved, we took it and my parents couldnt find anyone who wanted it so it went to the junkyard.
Repaint it in high heat paint and use it outdoors until you are tired of it and then sell it. No reason you cant enjoy it and sell it as well.
uh, isn't that a chiminea that's intended for outdoor use anyway? or were you thinking about offering it up for indoor decoration?
It would have originally been indoors apparently with and electronic fireplace in it. I’m wondering if it could handle wood. Or if I should refinish it for indoor use and sell.
My wife and I just bought one ($1500. We got LUCKY) and we put an electric in it. You can make bank on this if you wanted. They are going for 3k all the way to 15k around my parts.
If it wasn’t designed for burning wood I’d be hesitant to burn wood in it without at least removing any existing paint, and given the rust it would need new paint if you don’t want it to be temporary.
It also has a few gaps that embers could drop through.
Up to you if that’s worth it.
You're correct. Most chimaneas actually shouldn't be used the way they "look" like they should be. We had one. It was outdoors but I remember asking why we wouldn't use it and basically my parents said you can do damage and a fire wouldn't burn right. Not saying all but a lot are only decorative.
Oh, that’s actually cool, TIL
There are also gas units. If the structure is actually made to take some heat and actually vent properly, but not necessarily a bed of coals. Then it was likely a propane or natural gas unit vs "electric" wood ...made of fiberglass or plastic. Inside or behind the faux wood was a light bulb with motor driven barrel full of holes around the bulb to cause "flickering light" to be projected onto the semi transparent spots between and in char textures of the painted logs.
Make a bong out of it
Fantastic find.
Put it outside and have a gas fireplace installed. It would be killer.
Well where are you going to use it indoors? 🤦
Hopefully that's not your astroturf yard. That's gonna melt
It might melt your grass
Super fab if it could be converted into a pizza oven. All best for your research and decision.
It can get hot. Just be sure not to melt your astroturf. Maybe build a foundation out of paver stones or flagstones or something to protect it from the heat.
Thats called a Hippy Killer Stove.
Send it to the dump.
sick bong
Will post again when it’s finished! Thank everyone.
If you spent a couple hundred to refinish this properly, it would sell for $2-3K near me. They’re highly desirable. Even in this state it’s probably worth a good bit.
I almost picked up one of these for free but I chickened out. I was going to use it outside like a fire pit.
Clean it up! It is awesome! Beautiful lines. But it can't stay right there when you are done. Sure you can use it!
Powder coat red or black and you’ll probably get a couple thousand for it
Yes!
Amazing! A bright orange malm fire pit has always been on my list. But they’re so damn expensive. Still searching….
Wood stove paint is all you need
Do a light sanding with heavy grit sand paper on the rust before painting
Sure can, like a fire pit - Won’t give you the same affect, but you could probably bake a nice pizza in that.
Great score! I have a similar one that is bright orange. It is a Pacesetter from Montgomery Ward. Personally, I would keep it. I keep mine inside as a focal point in my living room and use fake firewood for heat. It would be too complicated to install a gas line. A lot of people keep their vintage fireplaces outside. If you decide to sell this, you could earn decent money (depending where you live).
There’s a reason that you got it super cheap.
If you're gonna sell then I would leave it as is. If I were buying it, and already restored it would cost me a lot more. As is, I would be more likely to buy it and do the restore myself. So Cal maybe?
Even just clearcoating in satin people would pay. I’ve done SO many corten planters made to rust 😂
That would be awesome inside a gazebo
Looks like it’s already been outdoors for quite a while. I don’t see why not.
