I stared draping it off, was wondering if theirs an easier way help pleas
I stared draping it off, was wondering if theirs an easier way help pleas
Strip Mine was under a buck when this happened I bet.
Yeah that's my guess. I had a few unlimited cards like Mana Vault I sharpied 15 or so years ago when they were a buck each, and no one thought Unlimited would ever be relevant or money.
I paid 140 for my alpha mana vault, now that's the price of UL
Hell, no one thought mana Crypt would be money, let alone mana vault. Commander really warped the world of mtg prices, that's for sure
Umm unlimited cards where definitely more valuable than revised cards 15 years ago… Also mana crypt was always money. I bought mana crypt 15 years ago for the same price as force of will. Restricted vintage cards with low printing like mana crypt were always money.
I was a vintage guy, to me it was pretty much alpha or beta. Unlimited was worth more than revised, but both were essentially worthless.
Hell, I spent about 1000 bucks on CE stuff for casual decks back in the day since it looks like beta and was a fraction of the price.
Stuff like bolts, swords to Plowshares etc went from 2 or 3 bucks to 100+ and I made a fortune... On CE...
This game is nuts
you are completely understating the value of unlimited versus revised. it's liek an order of magnitutde of difference in price
You're talking about now lol. Back then an Unlimited balance or Mana vault was like 2 or 3 bucks, revised was 1.
Obviously we know what happened now, the same way Alpha finally overtook Beta.
I always preferred Alpha, and regularly traded Beta for Alpha AND 10-20%.
back when exactly? cuz 15 years ago it was not 2 dollars versus one dollar
It was probably early 00s, so I guess 20 now haha. I've been playing since lotus was 200 bucks, it's hard to keep track of any years
I can't wait til this Commander phase has passed
It'd be a long wait anyway, probably for the best you can't.
w/o Commander the game would be doing terribly - every modern/legacy player that thinks their format would be at the top if it wasn’t for commander is lying to themselves. The reality is that WOTC would be in the toilet without a format they didn’t create.
This "commander phase" is the main reason for new people to start playing. Imagine having to enter a world of ultra competitive sweatlords without prior knowledge... casual commander is the perfect entry deug.
I tried to get into magic about 13 years ago but I just found it to be too much, then last year when the warhammer commander decks came out I figured I would try it again, and have been hooked since. The commander game mode is what made me love the game, I have expanded into sealed events since, but commander is still my favorite.
I’ve never played Magic, but I saw the Fallout and Warhammer 40k decks and I so badly want to try the game, because it looks cool same with the Assassins Creed stuff. Been playing Lorcana cause I can do it with my kids and seems a lot less complicated.
I got the Necron deck from the warhammer set and Ceasers Legion from the fallout set. Both have become my favorite for the amount of power they can put on the board after a small tune-up.
Don’t forget massively expensive decks required to be competitive, rather than a $40 precon.
I’m coming back to magic after being away nearly 20 years. It’s pretty much all thanks to a friend introducing me to commander and seeing magic from a new lense. It’s also been fun going though my old cards and seeing some of old trash that’s skyrocketed in value. Mana crypt, bazaar of Baghdad, karakas, mana vault, ancient tomb, force of will, wheel of fortune, just to name a few, were cards that were no where near as sought after back when I was actively playing.
I'd argue Commander is one of the worst ways to learn how to actually play the game.
4 players means there's that much more to keep track of, and weird rule 0 schemes means a lot of players aren't really playing the full game (e.g. no counter spells or whatever other whack shit)
Commander doesn't have to be 4 players and I've never played in groups with weird rules like that. The only commander rule my friends and I have ignored is commander damage and that just made the game easier to learn.
Who is going to tell him
Chronicles i think, not 4th ed.
Chronicles would have an expansion symbol (dark, Arabian nights, antiquities or legends) alongside the white border. 4th ed has no expansion symbol.
Sleeve it up, play it, get reminded of the days your kid was of an age he did shit like this ❤️
If it's not your kid, tell it's parents to buy you a new one 😉
Naw, this is cute.
Yes exactly, if it's my kid it's cute, if it's your kid, pay up 😊
i love you said "it's" instead of their
Yeah, "it's", not correct eh... My Dutch is a lot better than my English is, but it also gets a lot less response 😉
I’m also dutch and can 100% validate dutch kids can sometimes be referred to as “it”. As a dutch comedian once said about the most ugly baby he had ever seen… “well atleast its a… Sweet? Kid…”
Should still not have used ' though. But anyway, the word kid is neutral and singular - so in my brain "it" 😅
Also helpful is that "it's" is not a possessive like most "_'s" in English. "It's" is a contraction that means "it is" and "its" is the possessive form. Confuses a lot of native speakers, too.
That was just a sloppy typo in this case 😏
its not strictly incorrect either tho lol
I have a few fairly expensive cards (not like 100s but more than strip mine) that I white bordered with an eraser just because I know it is tilting.
expo marker over the sharpie then wipe away with a cotton swab
This is the answer. Expos are surprisingly good at removing sharpie, insane as it sounds.
Yeah, the alcohol in the dry erase helps break down the sharpie ink, so you can then wipe away both inks
Also how you fix it when somebody sharpies a whiteboard.
I’ve done that myself so much - at times, it was intentional. Others… not so much haha
No Gods, No Masters, No Dry Erase.
I've got a set of nice markers I use for laminated maps, and it came with a "permanent marker eraser", which is basically just a normal dry erase marker with no ink. Works great.
Both the sharpie and expo will be impossible to get off the edges, whether or not you get it 100% off the face. So it'll still be marked.
Best you can do is sleeve it for casual/edh.
True, since the ink will soak into the edges
This is how we did table sittings at the restaurant I used to work at. Map of restaurant under a pane of glass. Sharpie to make sections of servers, expos to fill in seated tables. At smaller shift changes we just expose the sharpie lines rather than redrawing every time. Works like a dream!
This one right here op, I was doing this with some slabs the other day. Not sure how well it’d word on a card, but it’s worth a shot
This is risky on older cards because they are not sealed as well as more recent printings. And some printings of cards that old don’t have any coating and marking over them with any marker will just make it bleed into the card fibers.
OP, be careful. Especially where you scratched it off, you likely removed any coating that was there. And if you go over it with a marker or alcohol or anything, it will just soak in and be permanent, and maybe warp it.
Yeah you gotta finish the job and black out the remaining white spots.
You got yourself an authentic fake beta strip mine. Cant sell it, but might as well pretend you got the bling.
It was finished, he scraped that bit back off
Antiquities
That's why it's fake.
The point he was trying to make is the SET SYMBOL IS MISSING. It isn't an original antiquities card, it is clearly a 4th edition so the joke is 4th were originally Alpha/Beta so that is what this is :)
Aww the kid tried to help you make money
Yup, the kid’s phase 2 was going to be clipping the corners
Ah, yes. The exceptionally rare Alpha Strip Mine...
Damn, think of the value
(I’d forgotten that!)
Just cover it with white paint
That's a cool punishment but it won't bring the card back
Well then you cover the white paint with sharpie again
Just buy a new one if you really want the white border back, it's like $12. You'll also have 2 playable strip mines that way.
Play it.
Alcohol wipes or nail varnish remover on one of those ear cleaning thingies will take it off. Be careful where you rub though, it’ll take the art off too if you’re not careful.
Ok that’s what I was thinking, but I needed some reassurance before I just went at it lol
I’d recommend starting with alcohol and a q-tip. Much less harsh than acetone (nail polish remover). Go slow!
Get very high percentage isopropyl alcohol though. 95% at least. The water will damage the card. Use as little alcohol as possible, don't soak it or the card.
You’re better off just not doing it, mate
Be careful about the alcohol bc it is part water. The edges of the card will soak it up and swell/warp. There is no way to fix that type damage. I'm in the sleeve/fond memories camp or continue to alter for something unique. Good luck
Practice on some cheap white-bordered cards first.
91% iso is your friend
Use hobby tape to get a clean edge & protect the card first.
Thanks man
Put some paper towels down on a non wax paper plate. This is to soak up the extra alcohol so it doesn't destroy the back of the card. Use a cotton round and some iso alcohol (97%). Be quick and don't let the alcohol sit on the card. That being said, it's damaged. It will always be damaged. So honestly just finish the inking and sleeve it.
This will leave a muddy grey texture. The best thing to do is to just alter the Strip Mine further.
Finish the job
It's just a white border strip mine... not much value was lost. Just keep it/play it
Have your kid sign it and now it’s yours forever.
If you want to play with it - keep the sharpie on, congratulations, you now have a tournament legal blackborder Strip Mine.
If you want to sell it - you're out of luck, it will be hard to sell either with the black ink or without it but with cleaning damage. Take the loss, learn the lesson, and move on. But still keep the sharpie on because it looks better.
It will sell with ease on TCGPlayer. Just redo the sharpie so it's as clean as possible, and post it as damaged with a photo. I bet it would sell for $9-10.
This is hilarious, look he fixed the weird white border!
My suggestion is to embrace the newfound uniqueness of this card.
Lol what year is it
Looks to me like your kid understood the assignment
“Destroy target land”
Straight to jail
Use a fine tip sharpie to sketch a lil dude with a pick axe in the lower right, then it’ll be collaborative art with your kid! The border is already a wreck, it’s not like you’ll make it any worse.
Sacrifice it and destroy the kid
Damn right. I'll do what I want
I’ve erased two [[Timetwister]]s and a dozen [[Gaea’s Cradle]]s in my time. It always feels weird, but then I remember I bought a car for $30,000 and got $3,000 for the trade in. Life is about experiences and everything wears out if you use it long enough.

Thank him, them white borders were ugly.
Not even that bad tbh sleeve it up who careslol
Depending on the specific marker brand used and age, rubbing alcohol is what will get it off. You'll need a lot of patience, Q-tips and care. You'll probably want to test for fastness on a junk card first.
If the protective coating on the card is damaged (even a microscratch) under that marker you'll probably make it worse as the paper will rapidly soak it up. Be prepared to press the card if that happens.
If the ink is on the edge, there's nothing to be done.
Otherwise, sleeve it up and play or pay someone to, more or less, professionally "repair" or alter it to your liking.
At least it's just the border. Feel good you're not the Tabernacle guy.
shit happens.
get a new one for a few dollars/euro
https://www.cardmarket.com/en/Magic/Products/Singles/Fourth-Edition/Strip-Mine
Fuck it, draw a little Antiquities symbol on it.
It's more like RIP mine.
Honestly it's much better now
Kid has taste. Black borders are way better than any other color borders, especially white.
Embrace it and you now have a real story about the card
Nail polish remover
i mean... in my round you would just play, we dont care.
Get some painters tape, and finish the job with crisp lines.
I know this seems dumb, I remember milk removing Sharpie from fabrics. Dip a cloth you don't care about or an absorbent paper towel and try to rub some off.
More like a RIP Mine now.
So what you SHOULD do is finish the job. Color in the rest. Then play the card. If there are any markings on the back it’ll need to be sleeved
Reminds me of when I was playing magic at Boy Scouts camp and a kid got mad when he lost…he pulled out his knife and stabbed my [[Gerard Capshen]!
This is going to sound like a joke but I swear it isn’t: I used to sharpie over cards for proxies, and some acetone on a paper towel takes it right off. That said: I was doing it on modern cards from recent sets. If you have some revised junk laying around, test it out! Otherwise get wiping or get livin 💅🏻
I’ve redone the borders some of my white border cards in Sharpie. Typically, I prefer full art altered or black border. Knowingly doing this as they are for my EDH collection.
You likely won’t get it off without damaging card but may be able to try the dry-erase over Sharpie trick.
Just use white-out.
idk man, staring at the drapes isn't gonna do much for ya.
You can try going over it with dry erase and seeing if it wipes off.
But that might make things worse instead.
I fail to see the problem here; black border cards look better!
Alcohol seems to help, preferrably on a tissue to rub it in better.
Best results when the kid is sleeping though, they squirm less like that.
Get a bunch of sharpies, give them a bunch of land chaff and let them go wild, encouraging them to be more creative and see how high they soar.
You now have a beta strip mine. What's the issue?
just finish the job inking it better, it's not a valuable enough card to bother restoring
Its a strip mine. Tell the kiddo to sign the art, sleeve, and play.
You could have it altered. I painted a Strip Mine like this and made it a floating border card
Actually redo the sharpie for the OCD, and take the L, is just a strip mine 😂
Leave it be... it makes for a good conversation piece during the game ;)
This reminds me of the person whose child painted over their tabernacle at pendrell vale. They love who it became “ruined” since it reminds them of their child
Put it up for adoption.
Embrace it, now I’m trying to decide on if I want to sharpie my taiga
I had this issue with a few cards. Germx took it all off without damaging the cards.
Yeah I have a sharpied Wheel of Fortune, honestly I'd recommend just filling it in and playing with it. The sharpie doesn't detract from the look day to day if it's even and it's a good rectangle.
Cards are meant to be played. Don't worry so much about the monetary value.
Just get it altered by a really nice artist 🤟🏻
Just need to add text to the card: “When kid enters the battlefield, sacrifice strip mine”
Not sure if it would help in this case but I know when you get sharpie on a whiteboard, you can go over the markings with a dry erase marker and then use the eraser and it'll take the sharpie out but then again I only know that to work on a whiteboard.
unfortunately, drawing on a land card's borders renders it useless as the mana is trapped within the card and cannot travel to the mana pool via the borders as usual. i'd get rid of it because tapping it will build up mana within the card, which might become unstable
Leave it as is it’s not a super expensive card
I did it to a revised sol ring. I was 16 at the time
The child has done the lord’s work.
take a sharpie to the kid
its only fair
If you haven’t sharpie strip mined someones beta dual land, you’re just letting the best in life pass you by.
Imo, the best thing you can do with cards like this is to find an artist that does alters and have them work their magic. Even just a border extension and the card looks great again.
Your kid? If so, enjoy it and have them add a smiley face too.
Love that card
Ah damn. If you were quick about it, you could have gone over it with a dry erase marker and wiped it all off. It'll pick permanent marker right up so long as it hasn't dried yet. And cards are glossy enough for it to work.
Well, next time you have a strip mine sharpied.
Dominia? I thought their plane was dominaria….
I'd leave it as is rather than risk further damage
i think its better since now you have a funny story with this card and your kid
Send em to the strip mines
Man that looks better to me lmao
I know of a great adoption agency really makes the process easy
Could be worse. My friend has a playset of gold border [[Gaia's Cradle | WC99]] that he black-boarded with electrical tape as a kid.
Every time a new person sees one of them played, they always say, "Whoa! Is that a real Gaia's Cradle?!" It helps soften the blow that they're technically damaged. 🥲

Alter it.
In my opinion. Value increased
With Fourth Edition, you're not getting the ink off without severely damaging the card. The finish can't take acetone or dry erase marker remover. Pisses me off because I have a 4ED Mana Vault that some idiot that might've been 14 year old me did a freaking horrid alter on.
Great shape to paint over and make an alter out of
Finish the job. Death to white-bordered cards. Long live that kid.
Time to become this kid’s worst nightmare haha.
EDIT: Here is an example of what people did to their cards when playing 5-color. https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/3024au/i_unsleeved_my_old_5color_deck_here_is_the_land/
Looks good to me! You should see my old mana rocks, my [[felwar stone]] is prized jewel of heavily played. Sharpied BB, rainbow sharpie text box, looks like it was used as a skateboard, I love it.
It lives in my unsleeved EDH now, forever doomed to become more and more heavily played.
Plus, bonus points if anyone has old 5-color cards. We used to sharpie the white borders almost like a checker pattern for cards that were commonly tutored for. [[sylvan library]], [[basalt monolith]], and hell even white bordered duals. Good times.

It’s worth so little just keep it and enjoy the memory.
have them sign it and call it an alter.
There is no other option than to fully commit to it, fill up the border and make a custom alter art border.
A guy I know used to laser cut vinyl borders so all his cards had the same border, they look pre neat and the adhesive came off with a bit of direct heat.
Wish more ppl did that then this, unfortunately I doubt you'll repair the card but a small amount of 99% IPA on a Qtip should work enough just be really careful.
Judge marked card
I would keep playing it, then sacing it to destroy target land
...unless you get hecka mad hungry.
Sell the kid keep the card
1 of 1 black border fourth edition strip mine
Finish the job and add an Antiquities symbol.
Dear Gonti, Love Sophie
Get a new kid
plenty of good adoption agencies out there, dont worry
that kid might be you considering you have a little bit of ink on your nail.
OP started scraping off the sharpie, that's why there is ink on their nail.
You won't get it all off without damaging the card. 4th edition strip mine is a $10-$15 card. Now that it's damaged like this it's probably a bit lower but plays the same. At least it wasn't a mox.
