NOTE:

This is my first time doing a logo ever.
I used photoshop for this one. Device had too little space for Illustrator.
There is already an existing logo for NEST. However, I am making a new one to propose for a change as I feel like it could be better.

BACKGROUND:

The NSM (Natural Science and Mathematics) Cluster is a cluster - represented by the falcon - encompassing the following programs: BS Biology, BS Chemistry, BS Environmental Science, and BS Mathematics. NEST (NSM Educational Services and Tutorials) is an organization that aims to uphold academic excellence within the cluster by providing tutorial sessions, resource drives, etc.

I am dissatisfied with the output. It feels like there is something that screams too much but I just don't know where to start changing. Guy I am dating also commented how it needs to be more simple and digestible but I don't know where to start. Thoughts?

in class I am being taught to make logos by using simple icons as refrence. you have the simplistic icons mostly down, but then you can’t just throw them on top of eachother. Work around and change and adapt it in some way, but keep it recognizable by referring to your refrence

If you're just starting out I would suggest doing Google image searches of similar concepts. Lots of 'nest' logos out there. You'll see the structured simplicity they employ. Some are good, some are bad but you can learn from both.

Use your strengths, keep at it.

I don’t know how to elaborate any more than to say: simplify it. This is an illustration, not a logo. Think of how it will look at small sizes. Think of the fact that ink spreads. Think of the fact that if you were to embroider this, you’d likely need to fill the entire back of an XXL hoodie and it still wouldn’t be crisp.

You’ve got four birds. Each with like 20 small shapes across their breasts, and the smaller ones with impossibly small eyes which will fill up with ink if you try to print it at even a slightly reasonable size. You’ve got an extreeeemely long DNA strand. You’ve seemingly attempted to include every strand in the basket weaving of the nest.

On top of this, the icon does not remotely resemble an E, so don’t try to force it to. It looks like it says NOST or NUST. But that buggaboo is easy to fix: just don’t use it as a letter replacement. The crazy level of detail, though? It needs to be redrawn and simplified. Greatly.

I know ill come across as a dickhead but can’t provide feedback if you designed this in photoshop. Its already all wrong regardless of the design itself.

Also, is it really wrong to make a logo via photoshop? And no worries. I don't think your comment came across as mean or anything of the sort.

Completely wrong because your output is in pixels and not vector. Meaning your logo will not be fully scalable (will pixelate often) and you will struggle a lot to print it properly. Will be an unusable file pretty much apart from outputting jpg and png for web.

Try and explore having nest written the way it is but with the e included, and then put a succinct mark/image/icon with it. The little birds inside or on top of the e for instance. You may also want to explore having a tagline to give the logo some meaning.

You need to do some research. How many other successful logos are this complicated? I’ll bet it’s none. Why is that? what can you do to bring this idea up to the same level that they have? This doesn’t show that you’ve done any research.

First, you need to study and learn the basics of design and start by doing simple tasks. Then move on to more complex ones. After that, study visual communication and marketing. Gradually start making logos, which is the most difficult task a graphic designer can tackle.

A logo must meet many requirements. It takes a lot of experience to create a functional logo.

First of all, the briefing is incomplete. If it is a logo change, the first thing to do is an audit, identifying the problems with the current logo to know where to improve it. Unless an entity wants to completely clean up its image, for example, a shameful incident it wants to dissociate from, a logo should never be completely changed. Once those points that need improvement are identified, it's decided how to improve them. The fact that the previous logo is not shown or explained makes me think it wasn't even considered, and it's most likely better than this proposal, which has too many problems. I'll mention a few examples.

A logo's primary task is to identify the sector in which it operates. In this case, it looks like a baby food brand or a daycare center. The brand's typography is not suitable.
The graphic quality is poor and/or too informal, yet at the same time rigid, which communicates the opposite of academic excellence.
There are too many elements, with no clear main concept for the viewer.
Each graphic element is resolved in a different way. In a logo, everything should share the same graphic language.
The meanings you're attributing to each element are not universal. The viewer can never know what a hawk means to you, for example. And in this drawing, the birds are not hawks. The same goes for the other stories behind the concepts you aim to represent with graphic elements. This is the most common mistake non-designers make: thinking that a logo has to tell a story, which is impossible. A logo's task is to identify an entity and sign messages.
The size relationships are completely unbalanced; the large bird in relation to the smaller ones has more difference than is permissible in a logo, not to mention the other elements that are even smaller (like the DNA), and what happens when the symbol is combined with the letters. To give you an idea, the smallest element of a font is generally the eye of the 'e'. Nothing functioning at the same level (as the symbol should) should be smaller than that element. In this case, the largest graphic element, the wing of the large bird, is smaller than the eye of the 'e'.
Legibility: sometimes legibility is not a priority, but in this case, it is, and this logo is impossible to read. No one could tell that the illustration represents an 'e'.
A logo made in Photoshop is useless. Illustrator has existed for decades; there are older versions that can run on a toaster.

This is just a fairly superficial summary, as I could write pages about each aspect and add other aspects. If you're interested in any particular aspect, don't hesitate to ask.

While it's a decent idea to want to implement multiple concepts in one, there are a few things I would rework:

First of all, the birds do not read as an E so readability isn't super good on that point. I get the willingness to make it readable with the particles but I do not understand the visual of the particles and they are too small to be readable. I would rework the birds to show the E better
Secondly, the visuals on the birds are too busy and will be instantly lost while the logo is scaled down, I would simplify those shapes a lot.
Third, I would really suggest using Illustrator for logo work, if you can make some space on your computer, it's worth it. Especially if you're doing professional work, logos in vector format are so much more practical for anyone using the logo.

The reason this is too complex to be a logo is because logos should be a quick read. It takes too long to analyze this illustration and see the falcons and the DNA and the triple bonds.

A logo designer would take all these ideas and try to combine them into a simple, clever visual. You don’t have to explain the entire business in the logo - you could probably focus on 1 or 2 of these ideas.

And using all of this information to also form the letter E? That’s a lot. Pro tip, if you’re going for a logo that can also be a letter, go for the first letter of the brand name - that way it can be a monogram/shorthand.

So these are just suggestion to stay with your original concept. Try just a parent falcon and a single baby falcon. That could give the feeling of one on one learning, and will reduce the amount of elements your asking the end user to take in. I’d also suggest to maybe lose the feathers on the falcons chest, again to simplify the icon. I do like that you are using a pattern that speaks to triple bonds, I’d suggest simplifying the usage of the pattern so you don’t have to use as much in the nest. Another thought would be the integrate the dna strand in the illustration of the bird. Just a few thoughts, I hope they are helpful.
