Don't care still boycotting
And I hope people will continue to do so. I think boycotting for one month then going back to shopping at Loblaws will have little effect. I think we would need to boycott them for the long term if not permanently so the loss of business will have an effect on their bottom line.
It's too little too late. This is just a reaction. It means nothing. I won't be going back myself.
The code doesn't take effect until June 1st 2025. So it won't do fuck all to keep prices from going up even more for a full year before they finally have to honour it.
And guess what they'll be doing in the months leading up to it taking effect?
Signing is one thing, following it is another. Plus the code has no teeth to it.
This is true everyone should look up the code it actually won't do anything about pricing but it could bring more transparency, but also it would be silly to think George Weston Limited wouldn't be lying about the information they post
2 friends joined boycott in the last day 👍
Only if other grocers are on board so they probably won't they are desperate for some good PR right now while walmart steals all their customers because there prices are simply better
So they’ve tried to water it down for months, are reluctant to sign, are only doing so for optics and it has no teeth…what a win. STILL BOYCOTTING
If I read it right, Loblaws is 'prepared' to sign but won't actually sign unless Walmart does too (despite others having signed already). So there really is no news here. Even if Walmart signs, the code is voluntary so don't expect ANY change.
Nothing happened. Loblaw did not sign the code. This did NOTHING to lower the price of groceries. This is a calculated nothing PR move and look at the media attention it got. If Loblaw really intended to sign the code then they would just do it and not attach conditions. So the real story is "Loblaw still DOES NOT sign the grocery code" and "Loblaw is now trying to deflect attention to its competitors"
The real issue is the high price of groceries which has led to outrageous profiteering and hurting Canadians. Double down on showing the price comparisons between outrageous Loblaw and any other competitor. And also highlight the cost of the basic Canadian Food Basket (find the list of basic grocery items and post it with prices). Keep up the boycott
Exactly. Well put.
Bingo
Too little, too late.
Did not sign. Title is misleading.
Good , still boycotting , now they can go down the list of all the other asks
“As long as other industry players do as as well “ fuck off, how about you just do the right thing ?
I’ll never go back. Literally have to drive past a no frills and a roblaws to get to FreshCo and will keep doing that
Too little too late
This means nothing. The code of conduct has no legal teeth. It’s an empty promise by a historically slimy entity.
The code is voluntary, and isn't enforced. Consumers have the only leverage to make change happen.
The boycott certainly did help. It was reported as recently as a month ago that Loblaws and Walmart were the only 2 holdouts, and that the entire deal was expected to collapse because they weren't willing to sign.
If the government has any brains at all, they'd consult with the organizers of the boycott and establish a updated code that has more teeth rather than the retailer-designed Swiss cheese of a code they initially proposed when the retailers had all the power.
The Loblaws CEO specifically said the boycot did not influence them to consider signing... we have to keep going longer and harder.
2 of the main demands were about the code (which they have not signed and have said the boycot is not a factor in their decision) and about not offering more shareholders dividends (they increased the dividend on day one of the boycott).
They are continuing to make a mockery of the demands.
Well the CEO is hardly going to publicly admit that the boycott drove them to agree to sign onto the code within just 2 weeks... But the fact is that it did. A week or two before the boycott, sources in the Liberal government were saying that the code of conduct was dead in the water because Loblaws and Walmart had all but walked away from the table. 2 weeks into the boycott, tons of anecdotal evidence about many (though, to be fair, definitely not all) stores seeing significantly less traffic, and suddenly Loblaws is agreeing to sign the code as long as Walmart does? You bet your ass we pushed Loblaws into it.
"It's been in the works for months?" Uh, sorry Per, but the Liberals - the people who had the most to gain from good news about the code of conduct - were quietly admitting that it wasn't going to happen.
"The boycott wasn't a factor" Yeah, ok. See first paragraph above.
You are 100% right though that the boycott is bigger than the code of conduct. That's just one piece of the puzzle, and that hasn't even really been solved... They've just conditionally agreed to sign a code of conduct that has more holes than a golf course... We need to continue the boycott beyond the month and, ideally, boycott Loblaws until they're forced to sell off a bunch of grocery chains and/or supplier business (which weakens their market and vertical integration monopoly).
I know that the widely accepted aim of this boycott is to get Loblaws to do things like freeze dividends, sign the code, commit to pricing reductions, etc... But I personally would like to see this boycott make an example out of Loblaws and show retailers what happens when you fuck with Canadians. And, given that tons of people are straight up changing their shopping habits, I'm hopeful that even when we call an end to the boycott (whether to move onto another retailer, another industry, or go our separate ways) very few of these people will go back to Loblaws owned stores
I agree with your points... especially about making an example out of them. So I really want them to say yes the boycott worked, but I'm just Petty that way LOL
You have to ask yourself why they never signed it before now
The wolves council has deiced to only eat 2 sheep a month and they promise to never eat more than that.
And this is just the beginning. They are starting to see the power of the boycott. We keep going, they will continue to fold.
Don't care. Never again means never again for me.
More PR bullshit from NOK ER NOK and Gouging Galen.... screw you, I won't be back.
The boycott is having an impact. Now Loblaws realizes it isn't going to just fizzle out so they are trying to figure out what the bare minimum they can do to weaken people's resolve and go back to the way things were.
This is a start, but falls way short of what they will need to do to get me back into their stores.
