Big facts here. A childless home with a responsible adult who doesn't often have company is a completely different scenario than a home with children and people frequently coming and going.
I store all of my guns in a large locked wooden box. It's called my house. As far as I'm concerned that more than satisfies any social obligation I have to keeping guns away from criminals.
I did make a point of getting a quick access biometric handgun safe, when relatives kids started becoming regular visitors. Kids will get into areas they aren't supposed to be quick.
Keep most guns in a locked safe, unloaded. Keep a loaded handgun in a quick release biometric safe mounted to the side of my night stand. Used to just keep just in my night stand with the magazine ready to load. Then we started having more frequent guests so I tightened my sails a little.
I only have two guns (for now...), and no kids or unknown adults ever in my 1-bedroom apartment, so personally I'm not gonna bother with a safe. If someone breaks into my place, the guns are likely not at the top of my concerns.
To each their own. Personally I would feel like warmed over dog shit if I was responsible for more guns getting into the wrong hands and being out on the streets. Safes aren't just for keeping kids away. But that's just me.
