How many languages do you speak? (B1+)

The flairs I find interesting on here are the ones that have a flag or abbreviation of the languages spoken, and then several languages with "A0" next to them.

I get if you're starting on a new language, putting "A0" to signify that that's the one you're working on now makes sense. But multiple? What does that mean? That they're languages that were studied at some point?

If I put every language that I've studied for some amount of time in my flair, it would also have tons of languages.

Defining speaking as B1 level or above

it doesn't need to be crazy fluent, but if you would be able of going to the supermarket asking where the things are etc I would count that as speaking

These are not the same thing.

Dutch (mothertongue)

I spoke Mandarin, Japanese, Bahasa Indonesia and Uyghur till I was 7 years old (grandfather died), so I lost my knowledge of these languages sadly.

At highschool I had classes in:

English (till now and the only foreign language where I am comfortable)

French and German (both total 3 years, but it is 8 years ago since the class, so I can only understand it).

Spanish, Latin and (Old) Greek (was extremely bad in these languages, so)

Tried to learn myself:

Mongolia (just for travelling, basic basic)

Russian (can read Cyrillic, but stopped due to lack of time at uni)

Polish (due to minor, basic basics)

I am B1+ in Pashto and Turkish buf i haven't learned them there are just too similar to Persian and Azerbaijani.

If i count does too i speak 6 languages.

maltese, english and italian - most maltese can speak 3 languages espacially my generation or a bit older cos when we were children we only had italian childrens tv so we learned that way

Arabic (Native) / English (Native Proficiency) / French (B2 and declining from near-fluent due to years of no practice)

Italian: Barely A1 - but my uni says I'm at A1 and not pre-A1 so there is that.

B1 level or above, or being able of holding a conversation in it (it doesn't need to be crazy fluent, but if you would be able of going to the supermarket asking where the things are etc I would count that as speaking).

I have A2 in Spanish, but I definitely can ask for things in a supermarket or even explain my problems to a doctor. I even could do these things a bit earlier when I had A1. Painstakingly and with multiple mistakes, of course, but it's enough to communicate.

I would describe my beginner level Spanish as "I can speak to people who are very patient".

Including my native language of English, I would say four! :) I studied Spanish for 6 years and my first job after college, though brief, was as a bilingual secretary. It was hard for me, but I did it! I work as a pharmacy technician trainee right now, and I use Spanish during almost every shift. I also use it to communicate with the Portuguese-speaking patients. I studied Japanese for 4 years in university and 6 years on/off before university. I can maintain conversation in that language. Next would be my heritage language of Haitian Creole. I underestimate my ability in the language because I put it as "beginner" on my resumes, but I am one of the three Haitian/Haitian diaspora employees and I often assist Haitian patients. I have also assisted random Haitian people while in the city (we can recognize each other haha).

I figure 3-4 would be a normal amount. Most people do their native + english, and because they are in this subreddit likely one more

I feel like this sub used to talk about things like language learning and now every post is either how many languages do you know or what does fluent mean

I wish I would vote "Three", aber mein Deutsch ist nicht jetzt gut genug, finde ich. Manchmal, es ist schwierig für mich auf Niveau A2 zu sprechen.

One of my students - a 13 year old (or maybe 14 now, I'm not sure when his birthday is), is working on learning his fifth language. That is incredible to me.

Edit: To be specific: His native language is Burmese (? I'm not sure about the specific language if there is more than one, because he doesn't know its name), has learned both Hebrew and English, is at a ~A2 level in Japanese, and he has just begun learning French.

Native - Mandarin, Cantonese.
C1: English
B2: German, Japanese
B1: Korean, French

So that makes it seven I guess. And then some other A1-A2 languages: Thai, Arabic, Turkish

I only speak 2 languages at B2, and those would be German and Chinese.

The other languages in my flair are all B2 or higher in passive skills only

So in my case, my flair is unfortunately a bit misleading. I will probably update it sometime soon to say something like "passive B2"

Knowing five languages isn't as impressive when three of these are pretty closely related. I have more respect for people who speak just two languages but from completely different families.

I mean, we usually state our level next to the pretty flags :)

I'm a native English speaker and probably about B1 to low B2 in French (quit French immersion at grade 6, did basically nothing in French for years and now I'm actively studying it again). I might be low B1 in Dutch, definitely at least A2. I'm probably either A1 or A2 in ASL, and A1 in Japanese. Those are the languages I'm actively working on, I've also dabbled in a ton of other languages. 

Fooour as of now, but if B1 is the criterion, it will probably soon be 3, because my Spanish gets worse and worse lmao

I'd say 5. I can realistically hold a conversation in all of them, but with German, it's still a struggle (tho I did surprise myself a few times with how much I can actually say in it).

I don't tend to speak much tho, I'm mostly focused on reading and understanding.

Three, but just beginner french. A1 or A2 AT MOST. I plan on continuing my studies but after i finish with more pressing academic matters.

I don't frequent this sub but it came up on my feed. I speak 3 languages, including English, fluently enough to pass as native in the countries of each and explain philosophical theories such as Saussure's structural linguistics. I "speak" another 3 languages well enough to buy groceries and stuff I guess but I don't really consider myself proficient in any of those. I'm East Asian btw and so I have a pretty high standard of "fluency" whereas I find Americans and people from other parts of the world where linguistic standards are not very institutionalised to be quite lenient in what they consider "fluent."

Twelve for me - finally made it in an elite group in a poll here, haha.

I am fluent in three, and can hold some level of conversation in four more (but barebone for Portuguese, which is not at B1 level yet). I can normally communicate well enough in written form to get my point across.

I put them as Advanced, Intermediate, Beginner (plus the N/A ones that I have some very basic knowledge of, but I can't do anything at all except maybe greetings) in my flair since I haven I haven't tested my actual level.

One. I think I'm getting close to B1 in German, but I'm not quite there yet. I've never done any sort of official proficiency testing, so I don't know exactly where my level is.

This should be the way for most of Reddit, a flaw of Reddit is that your probably reading comments from someone has hasn't worked or trained in said field, therefore, you may be reading nonsense.

I speak 4 (not fluently) English (fluent), French, Italian and Spanish. I used coffee break languages (its just like a textbook, but in audio form so I was listening rather than reading).

(I'm the polar opposite with math, politics and economics. I have no hope with these.)

That I can hold a conversation in aside from English? Three. That I can get by in? Five.

just two for now, but i’m interested in 5 other languages that i haven’t really started on yet so hopefully one day i’ll speak 5-7 languages if i’m smart enough lol

Apart from my native language, I am fairly confident in three others: Italian (most - i'm roughly B2 level) Spanish and French (about the same, maybe B1-2ish). I could mayyyyybe get by in German, but I wouldn't be 100% confident.

I totally misread this, so I put 3, as in the 3 I consider myself to speak fluently, else I would've gone with 5 as I can hold a conversation well in Indonesian/Malay and in Portuguese.

My Native Language is English and French and my Spanish is pretty close to it apart from the odd word where you sometimes accidentally go with the French/Portuguese variation as it just sounds right and then you realise you are not totally wrong, it is just not used in Spain these days as it's an old word to them.

It depends on the definition for "speak" and "language". Taking your definition as B1 and asking for something in the supermarket, which is a fairly low level, I would include German. However I usually don't define "speak" at such a low level. "Language" is usually defined by mutual intelligibility, so I would include Cantonese which is technically a language. My answer would be 5.

Three, four if you count Lower Saxon as a separate language

After 1 year of studying i think my aim is to be b1 in my second language in another year ( fingers crossed)

Raised in an English speaking country so there was little emphasis on learning foreign languages.

So native English and Hungarian at around C1.

However many in my flair idk anymore (all tested at official CEFR testing centers, I'm 16)

English (Native), French and Japanese. Both of my second languages are required for the particular field I’m in, so I’ve been able to learn and retain them to a decently high level. Welsh and Persian are hobby languages that I enjoy studying for fun when I have a spare moment, I don’t pressure myself to study them as intensely as I have the other two.

Native English.

Spanish B2, I use it regularly at work (I translate meetings a lot) and speak it daily.

I lived in Paris for five years. At my peak French was easily B2 maybe even higher....but that was years ago and I would say my speaking skills have probably reverted to B1. Listening skills sharp as ever though. I still dream in French regularly. I'm actually a sleep talker and my partner says I wake up in the middle of the night speaking French a lot.

It's still the first language that comes out my mouth when I get scared. Actually had a coworker scare me today by hiding behind some furniture. I was thinking about something related to work and how to word something in an email and she jumped out and I yelped "Putain!". I like when stuff like that happens cause makes me feel like I haven't lost the language.

So three. However, languages come and go if you don't maintain them obviously. My answer could be different a year from now. I recall my English getting super rusty near the end of my time in Paris because I rarely used it. I was a bad son and never called my mom often and when I did I would mix up French words for English words and even had a slight French accent. Now in French I clearly have a slight Spanish/American accent I can hear. I find it fascinating how languages work in our brains.

In total 5, however I won't be able to speak more than two latin languages in a day, my brain has issues switching, especially between Italian and Spanish where I'm B1 in both. As soon as I'm more consolidated in both (B2), it should be no problem. Currently working on Italian :)

I can speak 3, including my Native language. My English is C1 and Korean is B1.

I'm learning Chinese and Japanese at basic level, and still learning to improve my Korean and English.

Does this include our native?

Spanish, Galician and English.

French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and German (I really need to brush up on the latter two though, I got a B1 certificate in both but I probably slipped back under the bar since then)

Not sure if you meant "how many foreign languages" - because I speak my native language (Czech) at B1+...

But to be honest, I said 4 and it's 4 in either case. Either with Czech, English, German and Spanish... Or if we don't count native language, I can say I count Slovak as a different language and hence I am at 4 (would be same as if Danes said they speak Norwegian / swedish tho - I understand them at C1 level, I know most words, I could probably "type" in Slovak at B1 level and speak as well, especially when drinking).

Only two right now : French (B2-C1) and English (N), but I feel confident that it is completely possible to learn several languages to an A2 or B1 (conversational) for people who casually throw 20-30 minutes at it every day or so, watch media in the language, read in it, maybe try a class etc. when they have time for several years. It would definitely add up if language learning is a hobby.

That is how I have been approaching Japanese and I am happy with the progress I've made after working at it for a few months (mostly just learning all of the hiragana, numbers, travel phrases, and some duolingo grammar).

Serbian, German, English 1/2 Japanese

I love foreign languages so much that I have conversations in Mandarin Chinese with natives from mainland China 🇨🇳, Taiwan 🇹🇼 , or Singapore 🇸🇬 , Spanish with natives from Hispanic countries ( for example, Mexico 🇲🇽 , Spain 🇪🇸, El Salvador 🇸🇻, Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 , South American countries, etc. ) , French with natives from France 🇫🇷 or French-speaking areas , German with natives from Germany 🇩🇪 , Swedish with natives from Sweden 🇸🇪, and attempt my Hungarian 🇭🇺 , Japanese 🇯🇵 , Dutch 🇳🇱 , Italian 🇮🇹 , Russian 🇷🇺 and Esperanto with natives from their respective countries .
