The high fence and sod was pretty pricey, so decided to go with really small plants, and hope they grow up to look good! Any tips to full the garden on a budget?

You can deliberately try to landscape to mimic nature. I am here for the same reasons as many others.
I think the reply to your comment was trying to point out that it seems superfluous to leave a comment that was effectively "I'm not going to say that I don't like this, so I won't" like the intro to a bad best man's speech. There would have been nothing wrong with just leaving it at "If you like it, go you!"
Landscape is only grass and not flowers and natural plants?
