Keto General Tso's Chicken!
Main DishThis was ridiculously easy and ridiculously good. Tasted just like chinese takeout. One of the best keto recipes I've tried so far! Sorry in advance, I don't know the macros because I don't track them super strictly š¤·āāļø
CHICKEN:
- 8 oz Chicken Breast
- Bag of rinds (I used spicy ones)
- 1 egg
Seasonings of choice (I added some Parm cheese to my "breading")
Chop the chicken into bite sized chunks and blend the rinds into "breading."
Dip the chicken chunks into the egg, then coat in the "breading" and put it in the air fryer. Cook at 400F for 10 minutes, flipping/shaking throughout or until internal temperature is 165F. (If you don't have an air fryer, preheat your oven to 425F and cook the chicken for 45 minutes or until internal temp is 165F)
SAUCE:
- 2 tbsp granular sweetener of choice (I used monkfruit)
- 2 tbsp sugar free ketchup
- 2 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tbsp soya sauce or aminos
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1/8 tsp xanthan gum
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, add if you're a spicy boi like me)
Add all ingredients to a sauce pan, mix, and heat over medium/high until it starts bubbling. Immediately reduce the heat to simmer and let sit for a few minutes till it thickens.
Once the chicken is done, add to a bowl and pour the sauce over it. Toss until the chicken is fully coated.
Plate up and sprinkle some sesame seeds overtop. Serve with cauliflower rice or whatever you like. Enjoy!
EDIT: my bad about the chopsticks! For those that didn't know (such as myself) letting chopsticks rest in the food is bad etiquette in Asian cultures as it reminds people of incense at a funeral. Props to u/quiet_Paddler for actually taking the time to explain this to me!
What did you do for the rice? Looks better than any cauliflower rice I've made if it is.
It's just Green Giant frozen cauliflower rice, literally just nuked it. It's never failed me!
I use this too itās great! They also make a veg mixed one and I like that one even better.
omg that would make for great fried rice. Gotta keep my eye out for it!
Looks absolutely delicious!
Made this for lunch today, it was excellent, just added sesame oil to it to give it a more Asian flavor in the sauce.
Ah Iāll do this
Looks great! Costco has cauliflower rice in the frozen section. It comes in packs and you can just microwave it. Super easy! It looks like the cauliflower rice in the pic.
PS - don't stick your chopsticks into your food, it's like incense at the temple. Down vote away, but it makes Asians cringe lol.
I totally cringed, then realized that it was General Tso's chicken, so probably an honest mistake!
For anyone wondering, stabbing chopsticks into food vertically is often associated with incense sticks, and offerings to the dead. I remember being told that if you do that at a dinner with others, it can even mean 'I hope you die' to the person it's directed to.
Definitely something to avoid.
I'm all for seeing more keto versions of Asian food though. Chopsticks aside, looks pretty snazzy, OP!
Wow, I had no idea about the "offerings to the dead" context. Thanks for actually explaining this to me š
Korean here. Def did not make me cringe. It's an old tradition, and it does not make all asians cringe
White guy living in China with a Chinese girlfriend. She totally sticks her chopsticks in her food all the time. I know Iāve heard the incense thing before but just saying what I see quite often so I dunno.
How often do you tick her off?
Kidding aside, it's an old tradition. So younger generations don't necessarily care as much, especially when they're not in the company of other Asians. I've also found that the older more superstitious folk in Greater China and in the Chinese diaspora have retained these traditions much more than in China itself.
China (and the Chinese diaspora) are also massive, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's some level of regional, socioeconomic, or generational variation. Similarly, not everyone would be offended by being gifted an umbrella - sometimes a free umbrella is just an umbrella...
I actually mentioned to her the first time she did it. I hit her with the āoh who died?ā When she did it. Then said I thought that was reserved for funeral ceremonies and she was pretty meh about the concept. Iāve also seen women, all the Chinese staff in my work place are women, do it at work when they eat lunch in the office. They range from age 24-35.
When I first moved to Taiwan, I frequented a small restaurant near my place before work. I always stuck my chopsticks in my rice, and when the server walked by she would ALWAYS grab them and place them on the table.
Iād eat a bit more, stick them in the rice, and be on my phone or reading, but without fail, sheād come back and grabbed them out of my rice.
This has happened a lot while living in Asia, so now I donāt do it because if I do, I feel weird/guilty.
It just depends how traditional the people you interact with are.
Do you know any substitute for pork rinds?
Best kept breading I've used by far is unflavored whey protein with garlic/onion powder and parmesan.
Not OP, but have found unflavored whey protein powder to work very well.
Hmmm I'm not sure, it's my go-to for crispy chicken. Perhaps a parmesan cheese/almond flour mixture?
Buy a tub of whey protein isolate. I use ISOpure. make sure it's unflavored. It substituted perfectly for flour in frying applications. In my opinion it's a ton better than pork rinds
Sorry I don't know. I feel like it probably doesnt though
Can you recommend a good sugar free ketchup? I have only tried one and I hated it. I donāt remember what it was because it was at least a year and a half ago but it turned me off to keto ketchup so I just stopped using it. This recipe looks amazing so I would love to try a new one now.
I like Heinzās No Sugar Added ketchup- it is SO much better than G Hughesā sugar free stuff.
It does have a higher carb count, but itās totally worth it to me.
I am in Canada and use French's sugar free ketchup, it's very good.
Looks good
This looks amazing! Thanks for sharing!
looks amazing! but you gotta stop sticking your copsticks upright in the food: it's really bad luck.
This is my favorite subreddit. So glad people like you are generous enough to share your recipes
Glad you like it! The chicken bites without sauce make EXCELLENT chicken nuggets as well.
Hi I just tried this and itās so good! One thing I did because I had way too much chicken was add 1/4 cup of almond flour and 2 tbsp of psyllium husk to give it a bit more coverage and a bit of salt to the sauce but still thanks so much for the recipe.
Omg I just made this and itās so good!!
I made this and the ketchup flavor was too strong for me :( I might okay with the recipe and try something different, but definitely not adding ketchup next time
I made this today and had the same ketchupy issue. Looking up some recipes for "real" General Tso's, it seems that the ketchup is intended to replace hoisin sauce. Is ketchup really the best replacement for that?
At the very least, I'd guess you could go with at least half the amount of ketchup, maybe replacing it with water or chicken broth and letting it simmer down a bit longer.
So good! Also, hail yourself, scungilli man!
HAIL ME! Check your step for an Italian surprise!
It looks great! Ignore the haters.
Is there anyway to add recipes to a list that way when I click on ketorecipes they will show up?
Go learn some proper chopstick etiquette
Seriously, it's worth knowing.
Downvote away, but itās okay to tell someone they are doing something culturally insensitive.
They are not wrong. Itās okay to not know but we all learn new things everyday. Not taking away from the dish.
Sorry youāre being downvoted.
To me, it wasnāt what they said it was how they said it. Educating someone about something they may be totally unaware of is always better (IMO) than just harassing them about it.
It's okay to tell someone they are doing something culturally insensitive, but /u/highpotion just came across like an asshole instead of actually teaching someone who was obviously making an innocent mistake. I didn't realize that this was a thing until /u/Quiet_paddler took the time to inform, because I'm a dumb white American. Some grace and understanding goes a long way.
This comment honestly made me lol itās true this is like rule #1 with chopsticks
I have had Japanese friends over for Thanksgiving dinner at my house, been on a week-long mission trip with 30+ Chinese folks, and had countless other interactions with Asians that included eating with/ using chopsticks and Iāve literally never heard about this āruleā until today...
10/10 buddy, just had it with my beginner leto gf!
