Elden Ring Dlc came out, I get it
As an autistic man I can totally see this being a possibility.
Being locked up in the nut house is a good motivator to change your hobby.
He seems to have a lot in common with Henry VIII. His disagreement with Pope Clement VII about getting an annulment led Henry to initiate the English Reformation, separating the Church of England from papal authority. He appointed himself Supreme Head of the Church of England and dissolved convents and monasteries, for which he was excommunicated by the pope. He also had a 6 wives: Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived. Maybe Henry VIII was autistic...
He’s like the opposite of Hitler.
Just your average HOI4 player
I can totally get behind that.
I bet it was Pipedream the one that turned him away from his toppling career.

we need the reasons
The patient likely learned about Sedevacantism. They reject the modernisation of the Catholic Church done by John XXIII and, as the Second Vatican Council was (in their minds) heretical, the conclave to elect his successor was invalid, since a Pope cannot be elected by heretics. They argue John XXIII was an antipope, and the last legitimate pope was Pius XII, so the See of Rome is vacant.
The rejection is grounded in medieval religious law which proposes that the Catholic Church is the One True Religion, it is the only legitimate government of Christendom, all other Christians are heretics and should be dealt with as such, and the core mission of the Catholic Church is to achieve those statuses and aims if it does not have it.
Who would be the current Pope according to midevil law?
To give a serious answer: unknown. Because it's not something you could determine from lineage or anything, rather the rsult of a vote that never took place. It's like asking who the president of North Korea would be if the Kim dynasty never came to power.
According to those guys no one, that’s what Sedevacantism means - the seat is vacant.
Actually Pope Francis. The funny thing about that line of logic is that the entire claim of the Pope‘s illegitimacy rests on John XXIII and the Second Vatican Council being heretical, and according to them they don’t get to make that determination - only the Catholic Church does as the only legitimate government of Christendom.
Them only objecting to the Second Vaticanum and not the first one, which established papal infallibility, makes this just hilarious because it means that they think the Pope was the ultimate authority on matters of faith, and also so wrong about matters of faith that he was a heretic.

Now tell us the one about the pope that was dug up and put on trial as a corpse.
So how was the food in the psychiatric hospital?
Every single person who rejects Vatican 2 is batshit fucking insane
Yep, they want to keep the Latin Mass (they don't know Latin) and return to the morality and ethics of the 1800s. They are basically the Catholic equivalents of Sovereign Citizens. Truly insane.
And the venn diagram there is also fascinating/horrifying.
The idea that church services being in a language actually understood by the congregation is a bad thing tells you an awful lot about that side’s views on authoritarianism generally.
Psychiatry is not a perfect science and physicians are burdened to keep their patients safe from harm. Someone claiming very passionately that the pope is illegitimate and they intend to fly to the Vatican and confront religious leaders about their putative fraud is consistent with a flight of ideas and delusions of grandeur seen in manic episodes and schizophrenia. Hyperreligiousity in general is very common in inpatient schizophrenia. Keep in mind that being kept in a hospital is not a punitive sentence—it’s done so psychiatrists can make sure a patient is not a danger to themselves or others before rejoining society. Their successes in doing so are silent and failures can be disastrous. Given the tremendous overlap between personality disorders and psychotic pathologies, great care is taken to differentiate the two while erring on the side of patient safety.
In short, a lot of what physicians do can sound overbearing out of context. There’s a reason why the jobs require so much training.
Autism is fucking wild. I was diagnosed recently and now my whole life makes so much sense.
I fucking LOVE pens. I love pens so much. And I love WRITING with pens. I generally use Pentel Energels, and was lucky enough to find 0.5s recently that I now use religiously (0.5 is my favorite size). I put the ink cartridges inside of metal bodies that had previously come with 0.7 cartridges so I could use my 0.5s in the metal bodies.
Anyway, I love writing with them. I write almost all day every day. Recently, my brain had this fucking idea that I should learn how to write with my LEFT hand as well, so that I could write even MORE. It seemed like a genius idea. And being able to write with multiple kinds of pens in multiple different ways appealed to my brain in an overpowering way.
…So, now I’m training my left hand to write. I bough another new journal JUST to practice in so I didn’t clutter my regular journal. That way, I can also keep better track of my progress. Right now I’m using felt-tip pens (Sharpie 0.7) since, of my collection, they probably smear the least. They’re also light and easy to hold, whereas my usual metal-bodied Pentels are heavier due to being, well, metal.
I go through an ink cartridge in my primary pen maybe once every two or so weeks. I buy a lot if refills! Recently I bought refills for the sky blue ink I have, which is my favorite color! (That’s another thing: I basically LIVE in the color blue, literally almost everything I have is blue. It makes me SO HAPPY! Blue is the best!!)
And I’ve loved pens all of my life. In high school, I had my backpack, and then an additional bag(a satchel) I would wear that was FULL of ONLY pens, with a few pencils for schoolwork. I had all kinds of pens! I was always the first kid people would ask of they forgot their pencil that day (so I kept a few shitty pencils to loan since mother fuckers kept taking my collection!).
I am told very often that I am a “weird” and “strange” person. But that’s okay. I’m just in the corner with my pens. I’m not hurting anyone 😁🩵
You're not a true pen master unless you write with both hands at the same time.
I knew a guy in highschool who learned to write his name forwards and backwards with both hands simultaneously as an exercise for playing the piano. Dude was a beast.
And if you're not a true pen master, does that mean that the pen is master?
[sorry, just wanted to make a stupid dick joke]
Do you have a pen review blog?? Thats the exact kind of niche but genuinely interesting and insightful thing people would go CRAZY for and it would be nice to keep track of alllll the sick pens over the years
For real, autistic people who have done the deep dives in their special interests and shared the tl;dr are so fucking helpful for my ADHD brain when I need to make a decision related to the topic
The neurospicy people teaming up right there for maximum satisfaction on both ends. Gotta stay together broskis 😤
I'm in Japan, I need to send you some 0.38s. Life changing shit.
I'm waiting on a potential ASD diagnosis, lol
I like the 0.38 for some things but found them so hard to find in a nice pen that doesn’t skip and I can find readily in Australia without paying a bomb for them 🫠 the 0.5 is a good substitute for me though.
Try Muji .38. Life changing.
Okay, I wrote a few paragraphs, but ultimately decided to drop a link for you instead:
I am a lefty and have avoided gel inks becuase they smear. Do these smear? I typically roll with Zebra 0.7mm
I love how much you love pens!
Seing people so passionate makes me so happy lol. I could hear somebody talk about their passion all day. I'm glad you found something that makes you happy and makes you looking forward to something, few people gets to have that so it's beautiful to see 🙂.
Hope i'm not too overwhelming with my compliments but my younger brother is on the spectrum too and I love seeing him be entirely enthralled in what he likes. I would love to like something that much to be honest 😆
I wish you success with your progression toward penmanship!
You should move to Pensacola so you can be the Pensacola pen collector
What are you writing about? I’m imagining you go through a lot of paper, is it lined or an art journal type book? So interesting
I was team 0.5, but then I found a 0.38. It was a game changer. I can write so small and have it come out crisp and clear.
Ayyy, 0.5 supremacy!
I see you, friend. ;)
I can relate.
Pilot G2 0.38 are my jam. Sharpie S-Gel is a close 2nd. They look and feel nicer, but don't write as well.
Today I learned G2 comes in 0.38.
[Oh what a lovely day gif]
Internet pen friend. Try a Muji .5 or a .38. They're the best I've ever used and I love pens as well.
The most shocking part of this comment is that your username isn't pen related
I generally use Pentel Energels, and was lucky enough to find 0.5s recently that I now use religiously (0.5 is my favorite size). I put the ink cartridges inside of metal bodies that had previously come with 0.7 cartridges so I could use my 0.5s in the metal bodies.
Reading this left me feeling so validated. Thank you, internet stranger. I am looking down at my beloved 0.7 silver and purple Energel cylinder, endlessly used such that its markings are wearing away in the places where they come in contact with my hand, secure in the knowledge that at least one other person on this planet understands why I went to the lengths I did to secure sufficient purple refills and three pristine 0.7mm purple bodies.
Purple is the color of my thoughts. Everything works better in purple. My glasses are purple, not because I think purple frames improve my vision, but because they help me process what I see. People think I'm weird, that the difference is imaginary. They don't understand how I can't think in black ink.
I don't know how old you are, but at almost fifty years old, I am too damn old to bother with black bic pens or weird dollar store "sharpies." Having the right pen is nothing less than having the right tool for the right job.
I'm an autistic person who also loves pens (and pencils)! I taught myself how to write with my left hand, too, lol. .5 is my favorite mechanical pencil size, and I use the Pentel metal graphing pencils. Have you ever been interested in calligraphy type writing? It's such a fun way to write!
Fuck yeah I'm glad you live in a world with blue pens and I'm extra glad that you've found them and can enjoy them.
I’m not really a pen guy, but the sharpie 0.7s are great pens. I’ve been buying them myself to use for work for years now and people are always stealing them, even when they have pens, because our office stocks crappy cheap pens.
My dad is ASD and randomly taught himself how to write left handed quite well like 10 years ago. You can do it!
I’m also ASD and obsessed with fountain ink pens.
That's me but with books (except these days I absolutely refuse to let anyone borrow my books)
Normal is boring! And there should be more happiness in the world. If pens are your happy, more power to you!
Sometimes I think medieval monasteries were just giant mancaves for guys who were too autistic to get married so this makes sense.
And convents for the autistic girls.
Don't forget all the lesbians
There's definitely male and feamle autism energy coming from both religions.
Yes. Especially if they were studying anything. I’m looking at you Galileo and Copernicus.
I suspect more major changes in history (both good and bad) are from neurodiverse people. GenX late Dx here. And everything makes so much more sense. Especially me being called “unique” or “”quirky” when I was young.
I agree! I have a theory that Martin Luther was autistic or neurodivergent in some way. Who else would have been so driven, thorough, and pedantic (obsessed?) to write all those theses. I actually thought the OP was talking about him at first lol.
As a fellow ASD that last line made me lol
I laughed a bit too. My brother and I are both on the spectrum, and while I don’t bounce from fixation quite as much…this is basically one step removed from something he would do.
I like to think he found Crusader Kings 3 and just became the pope instead.
Wait can your really be sent to mental hospital for having hyperfixations?? Oh shit i hope they never find out how many clone troopers from star wars i can name
Are you a danger to yourselves and others?
Clone trooper names are only dangerous to clone troopers who want to remain anonymous.
And by others, do you mean every other person, or just the rich and privileged?
Other humans in general.
I don't believe for an instant that this guy was the victim of some Vatican hit squad. The Vatican probably doesn't even know he exists. The Illuminati was made up by Robert Anton Wilson in the 70s - and taken up by the counterculture.
Even tho an obsession with denouncing the pope seems petty, depending on this guy's depth, he could do serious harm to himself. Financially, mentally, and physically. He could have gotten himself stranded in Rome, taken advantage of, you name it.
Not knowing anything else about the Anti-pope's home life or support system makes it hard to guess who had him committed. Was it a family member? Was he acting out his theory in public? Was he publicizing his plans?
Neurotypical people do these types of things to themselves all the time & don't end up in a mental institution. Why? Because they end up in jail, not a hospital. Working at the casinos in Vegas I saw it all the time. People come to Vegas with a gambling plan & budget. Next thing you know they're broke & stranded.
Please I need to know how many
If your hyperfixation is denouncing the pope because he is illegitimate according to obscure medieval religious law then yes you can be sent to the mental hospital.
If you just like knowing a lot about cars you are probably fine.
*clone troopers
Yes. Absolutely this can be a thing. The "obsession" looks illogical and "delusional" because almost no-one has the bandwidth to follow the trail that got us there- but it is in fact absolutely logical, to an extremely fine degree of detail and precision. Just an unusual amount of....focus.
It's a very real danger for autistic people- yes. 😳
Context: Am autistic
Tbh, with most of my spectrum friends it isn't so much that a lack of bandwidth that makes it seem illogical, it's that most of them will just not be able to see the wider context of something or address any sort of subjectivism once they get invested in a special interest.
And more than a few will end up very upset or despondent if they find that something doesn't work out like they "know" it should with a special interest.
This was me with politics. I “knew” how things should work, and got very frustrated that people just never seemed to understand what was so obvious to me.
Then I finally realized that governments are made of people and people never fucking do anything according to plan.
I think the point wasn't that the person with autism lacked bandwidth, but that the people who decided to commit them and the people in charge of treating them lacked the bandwidth. If the first doctor who evaluated them went down the whole rabbit hole they may well agree with every single conclusion that the patient reached (except for the need to fly to Rome, rather than just denouncing Apiskopos Fraudypants on Reddit).
What makes you think the person you replied to didn't get the point? (not flaming, genuinely curious)
He literally just said, "I don't think that that is the primary reason, I think it's mostly something else", and from that you seem to have gotten the impression he doesn't understand what that is.
I think their point still applies. The person described was not appropriately aware of a very important piece of context: that nobody's going to CARE about his argument that the current pope is illegitimate, and so the trip is not useful.
We can follow you, but we also know you're hyper focused and just because it's logical doesn't mean you right to go challenge the pope. Because it's more of a social thing than a logical legitimacy thing.
Didn't mean you can't follow. Meant...pretty much exactly what you're getting at. No-one cares about the thing- because it isn't important in any way that's socially meaningful and that's what ppl generally have more bandwidth (ie "time of day") for. Yes.
Can confirm, and ditto. Most people seem to base their lives and decisions on emotion rather than on logic. They get very upset about the weirdest things. Eye contact and small talk for example. Now, I understand that non-autistic people need these to feel comfortable, so I do them.
Just so you know, people who claim they base all their decisions on logic are usually just as fallible and emotion driven as everyone else. They are just more annoying to be around because they are often certain they are right about things that don't really have a right answer.
Your comment on these "weird things non-autistic people like" made me want to do some exams. I also do that in a self-aware way, mostly because people around me seems to enjoy them.
Oh, the process of trying to figure out if you're autistic.
You start with looking slightly beyond stereotypes of autistic people...
...and end with publishing diatribes to the Internet on the many intricate flaws of the diagnostic process and questioning the very notion of medical diagnosis itself
I never thought I was until a psychologist told me that many autistic people feel that they're on the wrong planet. Let's just say I related to that.
I took myself to a psychiatrist who diagnosed me with autism and ADHD. A bit surprising at the age of 50, but explained so much.
Check out https://embrace-autism.com/
You do understand that millions of years of evolution did not simply select "emotions" because of a whim, right?
There aren't purely logical decisions because we take into consideration literally every experience we've had so far to take said decision, and our experiences are subjective af.
I mean, this particular one absolutely was not logical, it was based on an obsessive hyper conservative religiosity that is too wild for even most Catholics.
The thing is, it's quite likely he wasn't religious at all. He just got interested in a thing, found a logical discrepancy in something he read, followed a very long and detailed trail, with almost no ability to pull out of it because, well, one thing leads to another doesn't it? And then, if it is wrong, and such a big thing? I mean - the Pope. If it's the wrong Pope, then...well, it's just wrong. It's like an asymmetry in architecture, or a wrong calculation in a consequential physics problem ....wrong is wrong, I mean...? You can't have that. It's chaos. And you lose sleep. And write long tracts. Or emails. No-one cares, of course.
And before long, you are purchasing tickets to Rome.
It doesn't have to be personal. It just has to be upsetting, because it's...."not in order" somehow.
It's incredibly hard to pull out of. Once you're out you're out, generally. Until the next....logical inconsistency, or mind bugging "lack of order" you hit upon.
Yep. It's a jungle out there. And we're tryna straighten it all out with... tweezers? Just because it needs to be straight. No other reason. 😬
Don’t exclude ability to transmit that logical process, that’s one of my areas for improvement.
Thanks for sharing!
Why do I think the CIA has interested a few autistic scientists in hacking, virology, AI...?
I have some friends and family who work in the intel world. From what I’ve seen of their colleagues at weddings and such, and what they’ve told me over the years, a huge proportion of people in that line of work are some flavor of neurospicy.
They'd have to be, and it's by design. All the services give recruits a range of psychological testing. This process gets more intense as trainees move into specialties. No doubt works the same way coming in through college recruitment or law enforcement.
This process has been informed by professional knowledge, experience and training. By which, I mean that social scientists have gotten together and produced a top level human resource plan that attempts to maximize the use of all areas of human talent and oddity.
This process can create a downward spiral of frenetic weirdness.
Get one group dreaming up the most horrific stuff imaginable... the threat team. And another group dreaming up how to take all that horrific stuff and use it to come out on top... the response team.
Hey presto! A streamlined tech development process fit to drive a super villain mad with envy.
Probably not so focused and with some other nay saying intervention going on.
;)
my favorite part is how there is no context or attribution at all
I don’t understand why someone thought he needed to be locked up. He wanted to denounce the pope, not murder him, right?
Sounds like they locked him up for heresy.
There's probably a lot more to this than is in this paragraph. You can't be locked up for not being in lock step with current conventions. At least I hope not, then you'd have to wonder who are the crazy ones.
Yes you can. Mental illness is basically just not thinking in a typical way. There is no objective measure of "the right way to think" it just depends on how the rest of society acts.
You'd get locked up if you pose a threat to yourself or others, not solely from advocating or believing something most people find crazy or abhorrent. This guy must have done something explicit. Mental illness isn't about you not thinking conventionally or "normal", because those two are undefineable. Mental illness is when a certain aspect of your behavior or thoughts inhibit daily function or poses a threat to you or others. Thus whether someone is mentally ill is entirely subjective and depends solely on the persons current condition.
In most places you can't get locked up simply for being mentally ill. That's not the debate.
Because he was delusional enough to believe that him walking in and saying “nuh uh” to the Pope (on top of believing he would ever even be admitted to an audience with him) would have any effect whatsoever.
It’s a harmless delusion, yes, but a sign of potentially dangerous detachment from reality. Confinement was definitely for his own good in this case.
Serious question - do you actually interact with any schizophrenic people on the daily? There's a reason the bar for involuntary psychiatric hold is "an active danger to themself or others" or "can't function without assistance", not just "delusional".
I used to, as a matter of fact. I spent a few years working in the health services housing building of a county jail. Daily interactions with schizophrenics and other psychs were just a part of the job. I also minored in psych in college, having once entertained the idea of being a therapist.
You’re absolutely right about the conditions of a hold. The thing is, I doubt the above story is the whole story. People don’t just get institutionalized for delusions alone, and it’s usually more gently framed for the public story to protect people’s images and privacy.
Fair enough - I didn't get that context from your original comment, and demonizing schizophrenia isn't exactly out of place for Redditors, so it came off to me as "delusional people should be locked up".
That’s fair. I didn’t quite get my position across as clearly as I’d intended.
Personally I think the bar for locking someone up for their own good needs to be higher than this. I really can't see how anything in this post justifies him losing his freedom, even ignoring the fact that he eventually moved on to a different interest.
Another common trait of autism not mentioned here is a heightened (and sometimes extreme) sense of justice, which very likely contributed to this individual's actions.
All other diagnostic criteria aside, an extremely good indicator of autism is monotropism, the tendency of an individual to have narrow bands of focus.
ďeym I was honestly rooting for the guy and hoping that he proved his claims
Definitely brain-washed by the Pope ppl now.
Ok don’t scare me now . All the more for me to get officially diagnosed.
"Weird beliefs" alone is not sufficient to diagnose schizophrenia. If the beliefs are correct the patient may be merely autistic.
Ok but could we not let him déclaré the pope illegitimate tho? I'd like to see that happen.
Like some kid takes on the Vatican lawyers lol
Did anyone check his research? Maybe he was right.
This is the Vatican. They don't care if you're right or wrong. They care about conserving power.
Maybe instead of submitting it to the Vatican directly, he should nail his research to church doors. That has worked in the past.
Print out copies, drive across the country in the dead of night, and nail them to every church in every town.
This completely makes sense to me. I could imagine being this guy — if the adhd didn’t get in the way of actually finishing my obsessions
Relatable.
It sounds like his special interest challenged a sacred ideal for NDs and that’s why he was put away.
Computer games don’t shake things up nearly as much.
Yeah, it's not all that rigid and compartmentalized for all of us..
What book or article is this excerpted from? Also, where’s the other 11 comments? I see one other user and the autoreply?
Something was up with Reddit earlier, I think.
Reddit had schizophrenia and was put into a psych institution
Who's the 'we' in this article? Who made this? You?
It looks like a text from an introduction to psychiatry. US MDs, psychiatrists in particular, loves to sprinkle their textbooks with references to their clinical experiences. In the best cases it gives a great insight into how psychiatry works in practice. In the worst cases you see how much of a quack the author is (this is not the case here).
Multiple authors. Probably worked together. Not uncommon for them to write/speak as a 'team' for tone, probably all it is.
This is a famous case study. Can’t remember the authors but it’s well known.
Wait. Was (is?) the Pope illegitimate, though?
The classic bring down the pope to gamer nerd pipeline
wow this was a lot. all I could think about was how his brilliance was probably judged the hell out of because humans are terrible
Human lives and justice don't matter as we think they are. Traditions and status are more valued above all.
Admitted to a psych hospital why?
I need answers.
I wish my autism would lead me to do something interesting and noteworthy. Seems like I got stuck with an boring version.
I have that potential, but nobody can give me space to grow or the guidance that I need.
I wonder if they gave him Assassin's Creed
I mean, he's not wrong, but being illegitimate never stopped the absolute monarch of a European state from taking care of business in the past.
As an autistic person with my main special interest being history, I’m impressed by his depth of research. While I agree that wanting to confront the Pope directly is a bit much, it’s a shame that people thought he was a danger and put him away. And just because he found evidence from real sources? By that logic, you would think that all experts who claim that current monarchs are illegitimate could also be institutionalized.
Altogether atrocious treatment. The fact that there are still mental health professionals who can’t differentiate between symptoms of autism and schizophrenia is ridiculous at this point. How did they even earn their degrees if they are that uneducated in their own field?
Autistic people are the smartest people on the planet at whatever interests them.
And can be a total doodus in every other field.
Source: Am autistic.
Real
Source?
I'm pretty sure this guy was in my world of warcraft guild.
Why did he want to go denounce the Pope?
Why was this seen as illogical enough to require psychiatric treatment?
I'm not religious I have no context for understanding these things
He did it through his neesch hobby of ancient church laws and found out it was illegitimate and they probably thought he was mentally ill or schizophrenic so they gave him up to the spych ward
I mean, yes, I understand what happened, what I asking is why. I don't understand why a) he felt like it was important enough to personally go and denounce the Pope, and I don't understand why b) people thought this was dangerous enough to put him in a psych ward, at least in the US no one can force you into a psych ward unless they think you're a danger to yourself or others
Challenging religious world government and it’s a problem!!! Got it 🎯🎯🎯🎯
How anticlimactic me growing up was like

I'm diagnosed autistic so I hope this gives a little perspective.
When I have a special interest, it consumes almost all of my time. When I talk to people, I think about how the conversation possibly relates to said interests. I talk about them all the time. I buy things related to them and fill my room with related things. For autistic people, it can be something as conventional as being obsessive over a video game to something less socially appropriate, like wars or disasters. Autistic people may get extremely distressed when unable to partake in their interest. They may avoid social and physical responsibilities to partake in their interest. What makes it different from a strong interest in a neurotypical brain is the level of intensity and the presence of other neurodivergent traits. The intensity and length of interest make it an autistic symptom.
The increase in visibility of autism is in part due to our increased understanding of how it appears in people. It is, after all, a spectrum. As more and more research is being done, people understand the nuances of the disability and that previous research and ideas were incorrect. Another reason you see it a lot more is that, unfortunately, it seems to have become the next "I'm so OCD" type joke. The internet loves to pathologize small and unconventional personality traits and diagnose strangers. It also loves to single out "odd" behavior and thus label someone different from the "normal" people. The rise in popularity of autistic visibility has been a blessing and a curse for many diagnosed and undiagnosed autistic people.
That’s not the only sign. It’s a tell of autism when other aspects of autism are present.
What if he was right though?
He probably was, that's why he was banged up.
I was misdiagnosed as schizophrenic for eight years before they figured out it was just autism lol
So autism with a dash of adhd?
Sounds like Ignatious J Reilly.
I have HDA, and oh my god, my addiction is something so minor and minute. I just felt like I was reading bout myself in the first half. For me, that thing is naval history, I litterly spend hours reading in it, and all my hobbies revolve around it. *
I... feel attacked
He was right, so they punished him for it
I love that
I've never heard of the illegitimate Pope theory, until I read about it three times today. Is this a conspiracy theory that's spreading now?
I really wanna see the evidence, is it legit?
He then bought Tesla
