I am not asking about alternatives, tailscale is too inconsistent to be a viable option, it will just randomly use derp sometimes without any outside configuration, I cant port forward because spectrum wont let me. Localtonet works, but I cant use the mobile app because it doesn't like the url for the desktop, even though it works just fine on my browser. Dont see why it cant use the same url as the browser but I'm sure there's a reason for that, so where do I find the endpoint url.
Why won't Spectrum let you Port forward? Cloudflare tunnel?
no clue, i setup the forwarding in the garbage mobile app, it says it is forwarded but it just doesn't work. apparently its just my router not being able to do it.
You are using their router? Do you know the model number and do they allow to access router management portal?
If it really can't do it, then usually the option would be disabled in the settings. Just to double check, have you assigned a static DHCP IP to the desktop and ensured proper port and protocol mapping for it?
i have legit insured everything, i hope to get a new router and swtich to at&t because spectrum is just so horrible.
I feel like there's has to be something missed in the configuration setup. It's possible they have you behind CGNAT, in which case a standard WG setup won't function and you'll need to revert to Tailscale, but I don't understand your comment about it being inconsistent. I have several dozens of customers using both types of setups reliably and consistently while travelling full-time globally. So far (for years) I've always been able to get one of these two options working for them. The only failure being some rare corner-cases where they have a combination of both CGNAT and a very restrictive corp vpn client that won't run on TS. (In which case we usually revert to having the "server" end co-located at a friend or family members home - or I setup a private VPS endpoint for them).
By incosistent I mean without any change, it will use DERP randomly, more often than not. Sometimes my phone will make a direct connection and my computer wont and vise versa. I have no clue how to make it more consistent, ive tried the best practices, set udp/tcp rules on both my pc and they dont change anything. When it works it is faster than anything else, so I would like to get it working.
First, if you are able to port forward and get wireguard working, it will be more consistent and preferred to tailscale. ONLY if that's not an option, then tailscale, and if needed a custom DERP relay.
I was trying to get wiregaurd working, but I just couldn't port forward for some reason, I would check it on one of those port forwarding check sites and it always said it was closed, even if I supposedly configured everything correctly in the spectrum app.
If the spectrum router is giving you an option to port forward, then it would probably work. It's just a matter of getting the configuration right. DM me with contact info and I can try and help when I get time this weekend. No $, just try to get you sorted.
I appreciate your help, I think it really is a spectrum issue, I have the device setup and the ip reservation all made within the app. I may be a bit busy this weekend but can probably find some time.
