Once my aunt took me to eat Mexican tacos and i got a little over confident. I ate a good 5 tacos during the afternoon and before bed ate the leftovers. Not to mention that same day I also ate dessert, and corn with a ton of salt and butter. When i tell you I woke up in the worst stomach discomfort OH MY GOD. I was bloated, in pain, diarrhea, sulfur burps, just laying down praying it would go away. This discomfort was on and off for 3 DAYS.
I'm glad garlic oil exists, but it's just not the same.
One time, I stole a bite from my co-worker's shift meal (he's familiar with my dietery restrictions), and I was like, "Wow, that tastes amazing!" and he goes, "Yeah, that's cause it's got garlic in it, " and proceeded to be smug about his ability to digest it. I miss flavor.
Luckily it’s just garlic for me - I’ve had to stop eating garlic bread and dough balls which I loved, but now I eat a bread with an onion topping instead. Is it raw onion or cooked onion that sets you off?
Elote corn.
So fucking good. But corn wrecks my guts like nothing else. It comes out in the same form that it enters.
But that’s with everyone!
Many people can actually digest corn.
Everyone I talked to poops out the whole corn! Even my roommates with perfectly healthy guts hahah
I miss popcorn so much. It has the same effect on me and going to the movies just isn't the same. I wish I could've seen Barbie with some popcorn! >.<!
elote just means corn
If you Google “elote corn recipe” you will find that, in American English, Elote refers to a generally style of prepared Mexican corn.
in the first day of the holidays I decided to faafo (I had taken Imodium tho before eating all that shit) and I ate food with lactose for breakfast lunch and dinner was spicy and I was doing fine until I ate popcorn as a midnight snack, feeling victorious for having survived the day. The popcorn triggered absolutely everything and destroyed me for the next hours :")
a caesar salad that must've had a ton of garlic in the dressing. agony
Capsicum. Anything with that. I’d rather shoot myself. No spicy food in this house unless it’s ginger or black pepper.
there must be something off with me because everyone else with IBS apparently can't tolerate peppers at all, while i eat to my heart's content with little to no issue (habaneros tend to do me well and help me with bloating actually. i pickle them for handiness), unless they contain a lot of onion/garlic, specially raw.
You’re lucky! I go back and fourth with onion and garlic has always been fine for me
Even pepper is hard for me bc I have chronic gastritis so any spicy food (except things like ginger or cinnamon) causes me to feel sick and in pain
See and cinnamon is a no for me unless it’s like a single dash hahahah
Anything made out of food
Dominoes Texas BBQ pizza. NEVER AGAIN. The pain was so bad it kept me up all night and I had to take the next day off work to recover. 🥲
Pizza in general. Being in NJ it so hard knowing how good it USED to taste and I can never have it again. Even dominos at 11pm late at night I miss because it's just so good but all that cheese, bread, and seasoning messes me up now :(. One day I'm just going to say screw it and eat like, 2 slices and face the consequences lol
My wife is Japanese from Hokaido. Chashu Ramen is super famous. For some reason it just gurgles, bloats and then purges from me every time. I can't eat pork because of this. Every time we go back I eat the ramen anyways. Luckily Japan is a nervous / gut problem person's heaven. There are toilets. Super clean toilets EVERYWHERE. Last time I was there I couldn't get a stall in Sapporo station. I used a handicapped stall in the station. It was cleaner than my bathroom at home. Compared to the washrooms we have at the train stations here. My gosh...
Scrambled eggs with buttered white toast (ibs-c). It’ll fuck me up for for weeks. I miss eggs.
Ibs d for me and eggs were a safe food for me for the longest time, then one day my body just said nah and I've not been able to eat them since.
God same. If I eat eggs I’m running to the bathroom in like 15 minutes.
Anything with onions in it, or Brussels sprouts. Both never cease to cause me pain in the middle of the night, no matter whether I take a digestive pill before the meal, or eat earlier so I can at least not wake up suffering. They seem to hate me the most 🥲
The first time I had sugar free candy at my grandmothers house when I was a teenager. The worst bloating, terrible farts, followed by crazy diarrhea.
perhaps not entirely ibs related, but i have a soy allergy. went on a trip to see a concert, never realized these instant noodles i liked were made with a soy-based sauce... so i grabbed them at the market near me. was also on antibiotics at the time. nearly met god in the bathroom of my airbnb at 4 am and was so sick i almost skipped out on the concert that was the entire reason i was on said trip. was absolutely not worth it, never again shall i do that to myself 😭
i had something like this happen to me when i went to see a ballet id been wanting to see for years. spent a good half of the show just trying not to pass out in the bathroom
ramen. I was on a date with my boyfriend and i just really wanted to indulge with him. My poor man had to sit around for 2+ hours while i died
Oh my god I hate it when others are around. One day my gut really wasn’t having Mcdonalds while on a vacation with a friend. That poor hotel toilet..
yesss it’s so much worse when there are others around. Public bathrooms are my nightmare for this exact reason
dang i also can't digest ramen more often than not, i thought i was being weird but it's probably the flour and/or soy
oh i thought there was garlic and onion in there, i can tolerate gluten and soy but garlic and onion hurt me real bad
omg that's definitely it. i'm still sifting through my intolerances and after a horrible 4 month long flareup, i'm even less capable of digesting stuff so it's huge question mark for me still, but i just had a horrible two day flareup last week after indulging in smashed cucumber salad and could literally feel the garlic burn through my body
ooooo brutal! Yeah i’d definitely say keep an eye out for garlic and onion. They’re pretty common triggers for people with ibs. And i have acid reflux which makes onion even worse
It's usually pizza.
The worst time was when traveling, ordering pizza because is easy and cheap. Ended up spending the next 12 hours vomiting violently all over the hotel.
its always the god damn mac and cheese
Salad.
I just ate the BEST shawarma at the Eastern Market today for lunch. Extra white sauce, the whole shabang.
I'm in so much pain right now. Not sure if it wasn't worth it yet. We will see.
ive banned my friend group from taking me to Olive Garden because something about cheap Italian food just thoroughly wrecks my system.
Dang you consider Olive Garden cheap? You must make a ton of money
lmao no im a college student i don’t make shit i mean cheap in quality. i can make better tasting food at home for a quarter of the price
Gluten and dairy free lasagna where the sauce was puréed red bell peppers and the “cheese” was nutritional yeast. I’ve never died so hard over and over for 8 hours in the middle of the night. Fire in my stomach and my lungs and I couldn’t poop cause IBS-C so it was just gasoline in my body. Omg have never gone near either of those ever againz
spicy pesto, experienced the second worse intestine pain of my life
Anything with artificial/0 calorie sweeteners..messes up my digestion and bloating for weeks after
Buffalo Wild Wings.
I try to convince myself it'll be ok this time if I stick with sauces low down on the spice chart, such as honey barbecue. I try to use as little bleu cheese sauce as possible. It never matters. I'm guaranteed to wake up at about 5 AM the next morning and spend the next 2-3 hours in the bathroom. Sometimes I have to make it to work before the bathroom cycle has concluded. It's a 10 minute drive and I'll have to stop at a gas station bathroom halfway. Then I have to park at a 5 minute walk from the front doors of work. The stress and panic of that walk seems like an eternity and one of these times I'm probably not going to make it!
Lactose, olive oil and any form of bean or cruciferous veggie (as in cabbage and so on) will end me. Indian food is so yummy but oh my god, the pain.
Panera mac and cheese and cheesecake
Im so sorry
I know asparagus is one of my triggers, but we ended up in Austria during white asparagus season. I let my ex convince me to have one stalk “so I could say I tried it” and foolishly thought maybe it would be better because they’re grown in the dark 🤦♀️🤷♀️
Nope! Searing pain all night followed by butt pee in the morning.
Mayo, or anything spicy. I had recovered from gastritis and some spicy wings threw me right back to square one. Nausea every single day.
So many restaurants, especially pizza joints, that just aren't worth the pain.
That being said there is a local pizza joint that did send me to the ER that I won't stop eating. I, however limit the amount I eat and prepare to be useless while I recover.
I went to the Melting Pot for fondue. Now I'm scared to eat cheese. I was constipated for 4 days. Couldn't fart, shit, OR eat.
Almost killed by pancakes.
Pepperoni 💔
Butter chicken with Naan at an authentic Indian restaurant. I ended up at the doctor with bladder spasms on top of the cramping, bloating, diarrhea, etc. who knew ibs can cause bladder spasms?!? First and last time at an Indian restaurant. Sad, it was so good!
Cake :’) anytime I go to a birthday party or any celebration, I turn it away. Last time I had a slice of cake I was in the bathroom for 2 hours and it was so embarrassing. My little cousin (it was her bday) came banging on the door asking if she wanted ti hold my hand lmao. God bless her 6 year old heart
I have a few, but.... Stone Cold Creamery? I didn't even order much, just a regular ice cream with oreos in it. I took the lactaid pills, and usually that works. Nope. Not only did I have bad diarrhea, I had gut wrenching pain and bloating. Not usual for my lactose intolerance.
Fresh fruits and veg sent me to the ER before too. The pain was so bad, I sat curled up for over an hour.
50¢ corn dog day at Sonic. I knew it was a trigger food so I pilled up. Internal haemorrhoids within 24 hours. A week and a half of pain, then they burst. A day of almost total relief…then the perianal fistulas. One emergency, wide-awake, in-office surgery, one knock-out surgery with a seton implant, one colonoscopy (still no better answer than “IBS-D” ofc), one surgery to remove the seton, and months of healing. Probably a thousand bucks in over the counter meds, creams, pills, Epsom salt, sanitary pads, and adult diapers. Couple thousand more in copays. Ran out of PTO within a couple weeks, FMLA kept me employed but it was half normal pay-checks for three months. All said and done, four months of my life, thousands out of pocket, thousands more in lost income, and surgery scars that still cause problems. All for some fucking corn dogs.
(Edit: spelling)
Airport food even when I'm starving I don't think it's worth it
Just had coffee and milk. Was on the phone with my boyfriend and just yelled GOT TO GO BATHROOM BYE. I have not yet left my throne. My stomach feels like bees.
Anything with lots of garlic or onion or a no go. Anything super high in fibre like fresh fruit and fruit juice are my favourites even though they cause me such terrible tummy issues.
anything spicy. makes my insides feel like they’re swollen so i avoid it all together but man do i miss eating it.
Mac and cheese. It always seems like “a little won’t hurt” and it does. It hurts so bad.
how long after does it take to hurt?
I mean I usually feel bad within a few hours.
Corn, raw tomatoes, hard boiled eggs(however I can eat them scrambled or fried)
Breakfast chimichanga. I went to a restaurant with my family for breakfast and ordered the breakfast chimichanga, it was good until I started having severe stomach cramps. Sweating on the toilet while having unbearable cramps waiting to 💩. Not worth it
Popcorn shrimp. Long story short, I thought my shellfish allergy was gone.
Red pepper flakes. I cried real tears.
Cape Cod dark russet potato chips. They are tasty but not worth the level 8 pain I felt in my abdomen all night until I took a muscle relaxer
Donuts and Samuel Adams Octoberfest. How I miss them
I love veggie dumplings but they are very spicy . Once i got greedy and had too many of those and had a bad flare for weeks. Also garlicky food.
I ate a whole box of this ice cream called ‘Underground’ ice cream which is known for being less calories, so I thought I’d ‘treat’ myself and eat the whole thing in one sitting. I have never in my life experienced stomach pains and being bloated in that manner, nor do I think I’ll ever experience anything like that again 😭😭. The worst part was that I had to take a plane the next day.
cauliflower buffalo wings….. the capsaicin burned going in and soooooo much worse on the way out. Never ever again!!!!
Black olives. Apparently my stomach couldn't digest that, so I had it black. I have health anxiety. So you may guess how it went from there. I took photos, looked up images, made comparisons. Man, it was ridiculous. It was pathetic. :(
Crab dip… was curled up in agony for an hour
Ordered a boozy milkshake at an Alamo movie theater on vacation in Texas. I was just so into the idea of being served a boozy milkshake in a theater. Oh my god was that a mistake. Plus all the tacos I was eating …hell week. My partner was so mad at me because I knew it would make me sick.
Not food, but alcohol.
I had 6 x half pints of lager and a couple small wines over a long period of time and with plenty of water and food. I’m also not the smallest person. Woke up vomiting around 5am with uncontrollable diarrhea. Didn’t eat anything or keep water down until 4pm.
I hope I’ve learnt my lesson.
Normally, I can have a few bites of ice cream and then I hand it to my husband or else I would regret it. We went to the Oregon coast a couple of years ago and there was this cute little coffee shop/ice cream shop that had a mocha ice cream with a fudge ripple that they poured espresso over. OMG it was SO good! The problem was I ate the whole thing before I knew it.
My husband was like “well that must have been good! We better get back to the hotel.” “Why?” “Because you ate the whole thing! You didn’t even give me a bite! You’re going to get sick.”
Yeah. I was sick all night, until 5 am, sitting on the toilet as my guts emptied everything throughout my entire body drained out of me.
Anything that's high in fat, like heavy cream, whole milk, full fat coconut milk, and lots of oil. So, no, I can't eat ice cream and when I make butter chicken, I have to greatly reduce the heavy cream and use silken tofu instead.🥲
I miss Thai curries, ice cream, regular fat milkshakes, and any Indian dish that uses lots of cream. If I eat McDonald's McFlurries or any other ice cream, I have to be at home. But generally I don't fuck with ice cream unless it's frozen yogurt because it's just not worth it.
Mexican food primarily. Absolute misery for usually 5 days. But also basically any spice or condiment except salt will mess me up for anywhere from 1-3 days.
Onions and garlic are good and I miss them but fuck them both for what they do to me.
