But WERE Ross and Rachel on a break? What else are some topics we discuss too much?
DiscussionThe posts about each characters best outfit from each season are growing very tiresome.
Thought that when I saw the first one with 12 outfits, one being eliminated per post, for 10 seasons with 6 characters- over 600 posts planned…
Oh love.. It's not 1 post per season per character, it's 12 posts per season per character. 12x6x10 = 720
I’m the one making these posts and I actually changed it to only be 2 posts per character per season (1 for voting, 1 for the winner) cause it would make 2 years to finish lmao
They’re not for me
This is to be expected when you have a community based around tv shows that have ended long ago.
There’s nothing left to talk about after 20 years so all that’s left is scraping any content you can. Which Monica haircut is your favourite, which of Ross’s ex’s should he have ended up with, here’s a picture of all the characters in the style of Bob’s Burgers and so on for all time.
This is the one
Posts defending Emily. We know, Emily had a shitty time during and after the wedding. Enough already!
Fr like why do we care so much about Emily when we knew it would never last 😳 Rachel is his lobster.
Richard and Monica's age difference and how "inappropriate" it was. Yes, Richard and Monica's dads were friends but the show makes a point that it had been so long since Monica and Richard had been around each other that he did not recognize her, and by that point she was twenty seven. That is not "grooming." Also, the show KNOWS it's at least a little weird. They almost don't see each other due to the age difference, Monica's parents are initially VERY unhappy by it, and Ross is weirded out the first time he hears about it. And then they break up....DUE TO THEIR AGE DIFFERENCE.
Sorry but jeeze people are so dramatic about this relationship referring to it as "creepy" it just irks me so bad.
"Dr Burke? Dr Richard Burke? He's... He's... Like a brother to Dad." 😂😂
"Dr Burke is sexy???"
OhGodYes
I usually rewind this line and watch it again, i love it so much.
What’s more disturbing is that no one talks about Alice who did groom Frank
You mean on the show or in this sub?
Yes
I feel like this sub is always talking about the Alice/Frank thing. It seems to come up frequently IMO.
Thank you, holy shit!
People get way too into their opinions about Monica and Richard, as if nobody on the show ever questioned the age difference.
'Grooming'? A man who's been with one woman his entire life 'grooms' a 27 year-old?
People really ARE "professionally offended"...I thought the GOP just made that up.
Nah, people just don't use words correctly. I was in a support group for women going through separation and multiple women kept trying to convince me my husband's a narcissist. Like... no, he's a jerk, not a narcissist... that has a specific definition and he doesn't qualify.
Or gaslighting. Certain words are given a watered down meaning by the public and it causes major rifts in society because some people use it correctly, others don't, and when people do use it correctly they aren't taken seriously because society is used to a watered down definition.
And it does a disservice to everyone to water-down something as serious as 'grooming', imo.
Yep. Even when people say pedophile but mean ephebophilia in Ezra's case. There is a difference, a big one.
Yes, this. It’s such a dead horse. This is my #1 topic that comes up too much.
My least favorite are the posts about how Phoebe is the worst person on the show. I love Phoebe and can't stand the slander.
Or Ross. It’s a sitcom, every character is garbage and a horrible person if you wanna analyze them like they’re real people
Watching a show full of normal people wouldn’t be very entertaining
yeah they take things the show does for jokes too seriously. honestly think a lot of it is new viewers who aren't used to the way sitcoms used to be done vs now, like sitcoms at that time didn't care as much about continuity or likeability etc, they were shows you could pick up at any point and mostly done for jokes
I thought Ross was least liked
They're the two that most people have an issue with, but from what I've gathered around this sub most people seem to agree that, even though he has issues, Ross is also one of the funniest characters, so a lot of people still love him because of that.
I was about to say the same. Phoebe is my favourite and she was a great friend overall.
She was always instigating though. She also said she thinks herself as the "puppet master of the group"
I don’t know, I mean she lifts right out!
I think what really throws it into perspective is a few months ago, we were voting for the worst thing each of the friends had done and Phoebe’s was by far the most tame.
Didn’t Phoebe stab a guy once?
He stabbed her first!
Was it, I saw lots of valid points
Well, messing in Monica and Chandler’s relationship was voted for as the worst thing she’d done. Meanwhile Ross lied to Rachel about the annulment and Rachel slept with Paolo after sexually assaulting Phoebe.
People not liking a character is not "slander", it's simply how they feel about that character, which is a completely valid feeling to have. If you love the character, doesn't mean others have to like it as well.
People making posts saying Phoebe is a terrible person and the most selfish friend is the slander
Do you even know what slander is?
Why? Because they truly feel like the character is those things? I find Phoebe so insufferable at times it's literally hard for me to watch some of her storylines. That's not slander, it's literally how the character makes me feel. You may love her, that's totally fine, but I can hardly stand the character after season 5 and I'm not gonna lie and pretend that's not true and be forced to act like I think she's a good character when I don't think she is. People have different opinions, not everyone is gonna like your favorite character and that's not slander. Don't force people to have the same opinion as you.
Same, Phoebe is my favorite and it's baffling how much people shit on her here.
Meh there are way way way more about Ross and all for no reason, its just a circlejerk.
When we all know Monica, the person who tried to get a baby by commiting fraud was clearly the worst.
SAME!!!
The topic of discussing certain topics too much
Rachel and Joey lol.
Monica and Richard. Monica is a grown ass adult and can make her own decisions concerning her love life. Judging her for it is sexist and anti-feminist.
People also judge Richard as well as Monica
Came to say this
Best/worst cameos
"Monica was so selfish to expect Chandler to spend his savings on the wedding." THAT'S THE POINT OF THE EPISODE.
"Oh my god, if you say that one more time, I'M going to break up with you!"
Any post to do with aspect ratio and cameramen/holes
I like finding new things to notice, 20 years after the show ended
The show has been off the air for 20 years, there are only so many things to talk about in regards to it.
They don’t all have to be negative though.
People say this every time, but I’ve been in communities for shows FAR older than Friends where people still find new things to talk about.
You'd think after 20 years and having the same discussions over and over again, people would get tired to talk about it.
Even if they were on a break it’s still a really shitty thing to do
Another way to say rest is “break.”
I'm convinced that anyone who tries to come in here with their "hot take" on if Ross and Rachel were on a break are trolling. They've GOT to be?! Either that or they really are completely oblivious. The show ended 20 years ago and there are no more "hot takes" on that debate. I wish people would stop engaging in those posts. Don't give the attention seekers and karma farmers the satisfaction.
GREEN or GREENE?!
Great gif.
Rachel definitely said “break from us”.
Now, did Ross have to go and sleep with someone that night? No, and Rachel can either choose to accept that or not.
And the morning after when she goes to Ross's apartment to ask "Can I be your girlfriend again?".
I think that question in itself confirms they had broken up. Not even sure why - after all these years - it's STILL a debate 😅
Not to mention, if Chloe were a man and Ross was a woman...
Yep, drunk, vulnerable, abandoned by friends, saying no, pushing her away, etc.
Yet people make it sound like Ross left the apartment looking for a woman to hook up with.
Absolutely- Rachel chose not to accept it. Fine. Rachel was then wrong to claim he had cheated on her.
did Ross have to go and sleep with someone that night?
He didnt go out to sleep with someone, he went with his friends who abandoned him. He was drunk, kept saying no and pushing the girl away. Then in a very drunk and vulnerable state he called her and found Mark there. At that moment the girl just took advantage of him.
People make it sound like Ross left the apartment to look for a girl to hook up with, lol.
Given that the show itself is finite, topics are bound to be repeated a lot in an ongoing forum. But I agree with the comments.
Yes they were on a break which Rachel initiated.
I think how bad Ross is gets overstated. I would actually argue at his core Ross might actually be the best person on Friends.
YES
Every time I open up a post and it’s about the break I immediately leave. I am tempted to write a “please stop with this topic” comment every time, but I feel like I would be met with a lot of “don’t like it, leave” comments. So I don’t bother 😂
I watched those episodes when they aired (I was a kid) and I am very tired of this debate 😂
The "why does Emily get so much hate" conversation is getting a little overdone too
The show ended many many years ago. What do you expect people to talk about?
Topics we discuss too much lmao
While we’re on this topic! Has anyone ever noticed that Rachel herself said they were ok a break? I’m sure she was the first person to say it
If someone who you were in a loving relationship with slept with someone 2hours(?) after you suggested taking a break, I feel like you have every right to feel betrayed and upset. ‘Oh you’re so in love with me you sleep with the first person who shows interest?’ Kind of thing. Whether I agree they’re on a break or not, I can fully understand Rachel being upset.
Whether they were or not on a break was irrelevant, that's her point. Ross insists on the break argument because that's the only thing he can argue, and Rachel's point is that is doesn't matter because what he did was incredibly hurtful regardless.
Ah gotcha
I don’t know if it’s talked about too much necessarily, but there are many people who criticize the characters or writing on this sub on a moral level, and then there are fans who get mad when people use “today’s standards” to judge a show from the 90s.
To some extent, I get where the latter group of fans are coming from. Perhaps some of those moral critiques lack the proper perspective or context. And they can feel harsh for sure.
But at the end of the day, it’s perfectly fine to criticize things. If something is wrong, then it’s wrong. Certain jokes don’t age well, but maybe chances are that those jokes were always wrong/problematic and many of us just know better now or our sensibilities have changed.
That being said, while I have my critiques of Friends, I’m certainly not trying to “cancel” the show, and my best guess is that most people making the critiques aren’t trying to cancel it either. Dare I say, these folks are probably all fans as well.
And that’s ok! We can criticize things we like. I have my gripes with Friends, and it’s still easily one of my top 3 shows of all time.
So many people talk about how there's no African Americans on the show but I still feel friends was super progressive they had the wedding for Susan and Carol and I can't remember what other pride stuff they did but for the 90s early 00s friends was very progressive
Agreed. The show was very much a victim of its time - but it still tried to push the boundaries (as much as it could) for a show that was meant to be very PG...
That said there was a "little" lack of POC diversity but nothing different to pretty much every show on at the time.
If the show was remade today (god hoping it never happens) a heterosexual white actor would probably be in the minority for the main cast 😅
a heterosexual white actor would probably be in the minority for the main cast 😅
Would it, most shows still have most white straight male casts.
I did specify they would be in the "minority"... Meaning that perhaps only one or two of the cast would be white and/or heterosexual. The direction of most shows these days tend to favour inclusivity (which is a good thing in some regards).
Not saying this would've been bad for Friends - it would've certainly been interesting.
The show was actually praised for including LGBT on the show.
I’m tired of people posting this to talk about what they’re tired of talking about.
They sort of were but regardless a break isn’t a breakup and therefore Ross cheated.
It’s legitimately as simple as that.
The thing is, this really shouldn't even be contentious.
If course they were on a break.
Doesn't mean Ross should have slept with the copy girl. But it wasn't cheating.
This exact post that makes its rounds through Reddit every two weeks
And people here decide to keep talking about the break 🤦🏽♀️
Anyway, for me all those post about clothes and hair styles are stupid and boring . I would love to discuss the fashion of the time with examples of Friends, but the posts about the worst and the best are boring af.
Also people keep talking about how bad Ross is . As if he did something to them personally.
That Phoebe was a bad friend to chandler.she wasn't It was Monica who kept lying, manipulating and Gaslighting Chandler throughout their relationship/marriage.
Controversial yet brave opinion, the key to that argument is, it’s missing the word “up.” A break is not a break up. So no matter what, they weren’t broken up, Ross was in the wrong. Fight me.
I think people bring up Rachel saying "can I be your girlfriend again" means they had split up.
Personally I'm in agreement with you, a break is just a cooling off period, like when you take a break from work. You still work there, you're just not doing anything.
I also think Rachel's comment isn't as straight forward as yes they broke up. I think it could be taken that she wants to keep being his girlfriend and can they work through it.
Friends addict here.
I still to this day think that they were on a break as Rachel suggested but that doesn’t mean that Ross could go on sleeping with other women two hours after the fact and it doesn’t change the fact that it hurted Rachel’s feelings
Does Rachel ever refute the fact that they were on a break? I always thought she was of the camp that being on a break did not excuse him sleeping with someone else, not denying the break itself.
She didn't deny it when it happened, she even says they were on a break. In later years, Ross overuses the break excuse so much he manipulates the whole argument to be only about whether they were on a break or not, because that's the only thing he can argue, that they were. Rachel ends up falling for it and starts to say they weren't to stand her ground (she teaches Ben to say they weren't on a break), but it's more of a reflection of how much Ross manipulated the initial argument to suit his one excuse.
The discussion about who got it worse between all Ross's exes
