To expand on what others have said:
The WSO seat has two HCUs (hand control units; technically on the F-15 they're the RHC and LHC, or right and left hand controllers, IIRC), one on each side. Each controls two screens, of which the WSO has four.
In principle, each of these has a big functionality overlap with the pilot's HOTAS. You can think of the sticks as a bigger, more dedicated version of the pilot's TDC, with dedicated buttons instead of modal buttons, plus some stuff slapped on from the flight stick (like the castle switches, which let you select the display of interest).
The idea is that the WSO would manipulate mission information on 3/4 or even all four screens at a time, while the pilot would often have one display set to show information more immediately relevant to the pilot.
The WSO does also have the flight stick in the centre, plus throttles off to the left. In an emergency, the WSO can do most of what the pilot can, except for starting the plane or looking at the HUD, since the WSO doesn't have a HUD.
I bestow upon you the flair of βοΈπ€. Please put it on.
Thank you. Well, acktchyually, I think I deserve it.
You haven't put it on :(
Just checked, I don't have access to it via the flair dropdown in the sidebar. Is there somewhere else I should be looking?
Go to Steam: and then the Edit Flair at the bottom, then paste βοΈπ€ into it and Apply

The HCU cannot move right ? It only has buttons
Correct, it's just that the stick form factor is a comfortable way of putting lots of buttons with easy reach, and is also already familiar. The LANTIRN controls in the Tomcat are similar.
Plus it's easy to grab and index on without looking.
The WSO can bring up the HUD repeater page on a MPD, and since it has a camera setting as well as the NAVFLIR one he can see "through" it. So it's certainly usable. I believe the main thing the WSO lacks is gear and flap controls. I'd have to check again
The WSO lacks flap control but does have an emergency gear extension handle
Good call! I wasn't sure if you could feed the NAVFLIR into the MPDs as well as the HUD repeater.
I mean technically speaking the WSO can mirror the HUD on one of the displays and overlay that with a camera shot from the Navigation FLIR Pod on the nose to get a close enough view of what the pilot could see
They are to manipulate the four screens. An additional HOTAS like system as the WSO canβt use the normal HOTAS on stick and throttle. (i think the bacskseat stick is not even similar to feont seat, just for basic flight controls)
Yep, itβs not similar. The right stick controls the two right screens and the left controls the two left screens. In the pilot seat, you get one stick that controls all three screens.
Aswell as the backseat stick is just an f4 stick with no hat switches besides trim.
Or trigger besides the pinky switch
you have actually 3 sticks in the back.
Plus throttle. Lotsa stuff to do.
ooh boy cant wait for the floggit post
Yo dawg, center stick is for flying the actual plane, side stick is for playing DCS to kill time on long flights.
You know a XBOX controller? think that but in a stick format and thats why there is 2, basicaly the 2 halfs of a Gamepad.
Its basicaly used to controll the screens like in any HOTAS aircraft but they dont move the aircraft flight surfaces.
Don't spend your money on this right now.. Currently Razbam and ED are in a legal dispute and Razbam has announced they will not support their modules (Mig-19, AV-8B and F-15E) until they are paid... but it's possible that Razbam is in breach of their contract and that's why ED is refusing to pay them. this is going to be a long drawn out legal fight.
So why aren't players building WSO sim pits the way they build Apache pits with tads etc
Who told you they aren't?
I'm part-way through (have a real RHG + some other bits) but disinterested now that it looks like the F-15E may go the way of the Hawk.
Also i realized that it is the WSO seat in the picture, but i still want to know what those sticks do
Well there is a whole manual for the F-15E here: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/downloads/documentation/dcs-f15e_flight_manual_en/
Thanks
That's WSO seat. WSO normally uses the sidesticks for the screens and can fly with the limited centre stick and throttle if the pilot has a stroke.
