Not really. Closer to hud scan with selectable sectors.

This is pretty sweet! Wish there was one engagement over land though to see really how hard it it will be to pick out targets against ground clutter. The HYPE Is real can't wait til Tuesday!

So the boresight lock to sparrow launch was about 1 second.
The missile shouldn't have tracked, the E's require 4 seconds and the F's require 2 seconds to "tune" to the radar frequency.
I could be mistaken, I'm going off when the symbology confirms a lock and the IN RANGE lights up
He locked in CAA center mode (you can tell by the sidewinder tone and the way the radar scans 3 zones centered on the nose) and then switched to Sparrow as soon as lock was established. From the time of lock to the whoosh of the missile was around 2.5 seconds.
The confusion probably lies in us not loading E's for every flight. Maybe if we did it all over again, we would stick to one variant for consistency, but it is what it is :)

So you don't have to have sparrows selected for this to happen? You can get a lock 4 sec later switch to sparrow and just shoot?
This is the manual section describing it. My understanding is that this happens on radar lock whether the Sparrows are selected or not. If I'm actually misinterpreting it, then I apologize in advance, but this is how I currently understand it.

Not allowing for the time between lock and launch doesn’t mean the missile won’t track 100% of the time either. It depends on closure and the setting of the aspect switch.
Its like the F14 - Even if i dont fly this thing much ... its to good to not "own" it :(
As I have not learned the F14 yet, I will go Phantom first and go F14, once Jester 2.0 and the other improvements arrive for the Tomcat.
i chill fly the F14 on syria alone just to cruise in mid altitude and enjoy area...
How come the missiles are so so successful in these head on and high aspect shots? I thought the era is meant to be pretty meh
Well, it's not clear what sort of missiles they're using. But there are some hints.
Head on aspect means an all aspect aim-9 was used... meaning at the earliest, it was an L.
The janky 2.5 second nature of the sparrow and it's long burn time means that this is a 7f or 7m.
Neither of those are 'bad' missiles. In fact, they're pretty solid. Also, most of the air kills for the phantom comes from the sparrows of the E/E2 variety, so while hinted with flaws, they most certainly weren't terrible.
In fact, the sparrows were pretty bad with a terrible accuracy rate. But what really sourced the unreliable missiles were faulty maintenance of them. Particularly what were impacted were the sidewinders.

Okay - this has got to be one of the best showcases ever of the F-4, multicrew and DCS in general.
