As the title says, I’m wondering who are the best/most promising 2 way young guys in the world right now? Any potential Barkov or Bergeron type prospects?
Arguably Bergeron wasn't a superstar defensively until he had to come back from the concussion. He lost over a year of hockey and couldn't be the 30-goal scoring offensive star. In order to get ice time he had to start in a checking role and became absolutely elite on face-offs and defensively to do it. For awhile it looked like he'd only be a 3rd line face-off and PK specialist. When his offensive game recovered he became the two way superstar.
Danielson has got to be up there. Ask again in exactly one week and Celebrini will be #1. Probably leans a bit more toward offense though.
Sharks have Bystedt and Edstrom who are great 2-way prospects but certainly not that level.
I’ve heard very good things about Loshko, and reading about Molgaard he seems like an absolute steal. Seattles drafting has been absurdly good in the second round since they came into the league
Watched the Frozen Four and Celebrini no looked a backhand pass through traffic for a primary assist. If he continues to round out his 2 way game at the NHL level he’s going to be special. Happy you guys got him
Thanks! His game reminds me so much of Crosby honestly. Obviously not the offensive potential that Crosby had, but in the fact that the best way to describe is game is a Superstar Grinder
Ask again in about 4 months and it likely will be Danielson again. There's a good chance Celebrini is playing in the NHL and Danielson is not this upcoming year
I think it’s three stages rather than just prospects as a whole.
Stage 1 is “will this player turn into a 2 way NHL top 6 guy?”. Guys in this category are Leo Carlson, Shane Wright, etc. We’ve also seen guys be in this category and not leave as the question hasn’t been answered such as KK.
If this has been established as yes, we move into “can they become ELITE 2 way forwards in the league?” These guys are 22-26 and getting better every year. Think Suzuki, Thomas, Jarvis.
Once they have established this, it becomes “can they be as good as Kopitar/Bergeron?” Guys in this category are Barkov, Danault, Hintz
Leo Carlsson- i guess you could say not a prospect but definitely an extremely promising young two way guy
Trevling resorting to Reddit for draft advice
Tre catching strays when there are actual poverty franchises with a skeleton staff of amateur scouts
Yeah I’m just poking fun, I will say oilers scouting has not been the best under holland
I mean, he did draft Easton Cowan last year who everyone called a reach (myself included) and Cowan went on to win both OHL regular season and playoff MVP. He already proved that him and his scouts know a hell of a lot more than Reddit.
Treliving had no involvement with that pick, fwiw. It was one of Calgary's stipulations for letting him go to Toronto.
Treliving’s problem definitely isn’t drafting lol
Hard to tell with prospects but Owen Beck if everything goes well can trend to be a good 2 way center.
He's great at face-offs and is responsible with is backchecking. He allready proved it in the World Juniors. Plus, he showed some clutchness in the OHL playoffs.
He will start this automn is first pro season, probably in the AHL with the Rockets and i'm eager to see how he'll develop.
I feel like Dallas has so many youngins/prospects that one of them is going to be the next top five 2-way centers.
Anaheim as well.
He has graduated from prospect (still only 21), but I'd put my money on Wyatt Johnston. He's already putting up solid points totals while playing on the PK in his 2nd NHL season
I never watch Stars games as I live on the east coast, but it was a treat watching him during the playoffs. He is so good.
Johnston is killer for sure
Amazing pick by the Stars, and Stankoven appears to be another great one.
Including young pros, probably something like:
- Macklin Celebrini
- Leo Carlsson
- Matthew Beniers
- Shane Wright
- Anton Lundell
- Nate Danielson
If I had to put money on anyone, it would be Wyatt Johnston, Nate Danielson or Shane Wright.
Wright seems like he will end up like Sam Bennett, becoming a rugged character player, rather than one with high offensive potential.
Celebrini plays a complete two way game, he's who I thought of first.
You don't get to that level until you are ~25-27 so who the hell knows
More about ability to learn than what you can do at 18
Benson on the wing
Celebrini is literally earning Crosby comparables from respected scouts, so I guess I’d have to say him.
Definitely don't think he's at the Barkov/Bergeron level (or even close tbh), but Owen Beck is probably Montreal's best 2-way prospect atm
To be fair that’s a pretty high standard haha.
Obv biased but Fantilli merits a mention
Tyson Forester is acting like he could become Mark Stone light over time. He was graded as one of the best defensive wingers in the league and scored 20 goals as a rookie.
Foerster is a name to watch on the Flyers
Downvote just means you dont know who Foerster is
I really really didn't like what I saw from Tyson the handful of times I went up to Lehigh.
This season completely changed all my opinions on him outside of concerns about his foot speed. He's a beast.
The Flyers are gonna be a problem soon.
Add Ryan Leonard to the list of good prospect, but defensive ability on the level of Barkov/Bergeron is harder to project than offense.
Slaf
The tricky thing with prospects is protecting how their 2 way game will develop
Bergeron wasn't a superstar defensively when he was drafted for example
Detroit's last 2 first rounders are guys who are seen as strong 2 way prospects (Danielson and Kasper)
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard is seen as more of that type of high effort 2 way forward as well
Not really a prospect anymore but Anton Lundell is a young forward for Florida who was drafted in that mold too
