As I recall, Auror training takes another three years after Hogwarts. And they only take the best of the best. Nobody had been accepted for three years at the time of Harry's career counselling in his fifth year.

James and Lily may have been gifted students, but Harry was not. His grades at Hogwarts are decent at best. Far from exceptional. That plus missing a whole year means that Harry is nowhere near ready to even begin Auror training. Kingsley waiving Auror requirements would just mean diluting the standards of the Aurors.

Also why did Ron become an Auror? He certainly never expressed any interest in it previously.

Also wasn't the requirement for breaking the Elder Wand's power for Harry to die undefeated? Dude gets bested during a basic training session and there goes that plan. Continuity is preserved.
