Ok hear me out, (and sorry if this is the wrong community for this question) but why do we have the letter X? I can't phantom a word that couldn't be pronounced the same with the simple action of using a Z instead of a X. Now not talking about Roman Numerals or anything, just plain English. Why do we have a X? And what is a word that the X doesn't sound like a Z?
More like gz in some of these. Otherwise what eggsactly would we do for ovum based puns?
correction. it's either ks or gz, because ppl are lazy.
Sounding like a z is the exception, normally it sounds more like ks
C is the real useless letter because it can always be replaced with S or K
This is some khoise fried khikken, Kolonel Sanders.
In the Cyrillic alphabet the ch sound is one letter: Ч.
I just need to sit in my khair while I prosess this
Tshair
It’s there for historical reasons as there were c and k from Latin, Etruscan (can’t remember the details, might have got the languages wrong too!). But it’s a legacy.
Yeah, but C is a really cool letter, so lets ditch S and K and just use C. :P
C is the real useless letter
Q would like a word
C is so much classier than K. And it isn’t a whore who gets around like S.
I work for a global company and I am currently on a global account (working with a company that is overseas. I’m in the U.S.), and it seems they don’t use ‘Z’. Examples: organization is spelled organisation. Finalize = finalise
I’ve come to realize that maybe Z is the useless letter!
It's only the specific endings -ize and -yze where what is spelled with a z in the US (and in Canada usually) is generally spelled with an s in the rest of the world.
No one's writing "I went to the soo and saw a sebra"
I can't phantom a word
Careful - you'll end up on r/boneappletea. The word you want is "fathom".
There are other letters we don't need: J (we could use G), K (use C), W (use U), Y (use I). The Italian alphabet doesn't have any of those letters or X either, and uses these substitutions, with GI for "soft" g, as in "Giovanni". (The letters J, K, W, X and Y do figure in some Italian words, but these are words borrowed from other languages.)
Why do we have X? Historical reasons: the Wikipedia article on the letter will tell you more.
Why don't we get rid of it? Because spelling reform is difficult and tends to cause more problems than it fixes.
It usually replaces the ks s. ound. So it's a nice shortcut to use one letter instead of two
The same reason we need every other letter, namely that we read by sight not sound. Even if you had the misfortune to be taught to read phonically you don't do that now. You recognise collections of letters. I've used this example before but so much do you rely simply on the letters simply appearing that you can raed tihs prat of the sntcenee jsut as eslaiy as the rset. Spelling doesn't have to make sense. It just has to be familiar.
So this letter cause me so many problems. My name is Alexis, and we were using letters to describe ourselves. I asked the teacher to help me with the letter x , and she couldn't find a word starting with x that described me. I gave up and used a random word.
Then in history apparently hieroglyphs don't use x at all. So I have to make an imaginary hieroglyph for my name.
This letter is pointless. Lol
What I can't fathom is why people keep making posts suggesting the language should be simplified. Not everything needs to be utilitarian. Don't we want to live in a world with complex and beautiful things? This is like the argument for letting cursive die out. I don't know about you, but I like seeing the evidence of the various languages that had a hand in creating our words. I don't want to live in a plain, gray world.
It’s not that deep lol
You asked a deep question. How was I to know you were just shitposting and didn't want serious answers?
Agreed. With my kinders, we go right for the 'ks' sound. Usually the pictogram that goes with it is an X-ray. How is that helpful??
Exact, example, excellent, extra, remix, maximum. Sometimes it’s a kz or ks sound.
