Employee at golf galaxy told me not to buy forgiving/game improvement irons but I am unsure if he was just trying to get me to buy the ones that weren’t on sale.

It’s gonna 100% depend on his swing and most importantly his swing speed. As a teenager he is flexible and is probably capable of generating a lot of speed.

A GI iron focused on distance like the T300 would absolutely be a bad fit for a teenager who can swing the club fast. They will balloon in the air, go too far, and cost him consistency.

A GI iron for a teen who doesn’t swing fast would fit well into a T300. He might need the extra launch and distance that comes with a GI iron.

But far too many people just blindly trust that GI irons have zero drawbacks. They act like they’re magic and will add “forgiveness” everywhere. That’s just not the case. If they were so forgiving for everyone then pros would be playing them too.

The drawbacks are a high ballooning trajectory and trampoline faces that give extra distance from the center but high variability with distance with off center shots. Players that have their own speed should definitely look into more players style irons that have a focus on consistent distance and direction.

Even if the kid is fairly new he could be relatively athletic and already have good speed. A GI iron designed primarily for weekend and senior golfers may not fit him properly.

This blanket statement that GI irons are for everyone must end. They’re not. That’s why we have so much choice.
