With all the talk recently of multi-platform pushes and the head of Xbox insinuating that exclusives aren't as important anymore, it got me wondering. Has an exclusive game(s) ever made you go out and buy a console just to play it?
Has an exclusive game ever convinced you to buy a console? If so, which one?
Breath of the wild.
This is mine too. I liked the idea of the Switch but wasn't likely to drop a few hundred for it then I kept seeing vids of BOTW and couldn't resist.
Me too. Kinda regret it. Switch isn't bad, and I have played a lot of it, but I could have held off spending $500CDN is a lot to put down on console when I just play pc a lot.
I waited till I could get the console and game for £300 felt like a principal but caved at £310... No regrets.
Pathetic.
Yeah. I have a really nice PC. I just borrowed my brother's switch to play botw. I've since gotten it on yuzu and it works really well
The advantage of the Switch being relatively low-powered is that you don't need a top tier gaming PC to emulate them. That's how I've played all Nintendo exclusives that have interested me since the Wii.
Yeah, exactly. It works quite well aside from the few shrines that use the motion capture, but there's ways around that as well.
Playing on Yuzu with a CRT monitor, as Miyamoto intended
Problem I find with the Switch is that all the games stay full price. I don’t mind paying the full whack for something like Zelda or Mario Odyssey, but most Nintendo exclusives, great as they may be, are not quite worth the price tag.
Unless you sail the high seas like me. Literally haven’t bought a single game, but have like 40 downloaded
Nah, I really dislike pirating.
Ended up getting a switch when I was going through a separation. Picked up Smash, Animal Crossing, and Breath of the Wild. AC was an amazing distraction, as was Smash. But try as hard as I could, I just couldn’t get into BotW.
Through the years I’ve tried Nintendo several times, but I always end up regretting it. Have just never been a fan of the first party games, and third party support sucks.
Ended up buying a steam deck and giving my switch to my daughter.
Yeah if you're not a fan of Nintendo's 1st party games.... They really don't have much to offer.
I'm happy they've done better with the 3rd party stuff this generation, but if that's what you're more interested in there are better and cheaper ways to play.
They went from bad restrictions on 3rd party to not enough restrictions. The eshop is disgustingly littered with bad indie games similar to the 360 store back in the day
Not to mention the absolute worst UI on a shopping platform I’ve ever used
Oh yeah, anything related to Nintendo and online is pretty damn awful.
too many hentai games without actual hentai on the nintendo e-shop
Third party support has been huge for the switch? What are you talking about?
Switch has gotten decent support from indie developers, that is very true.
But third party support from major publishers? For the most part they’re janky, buggy, performance issue filled rush ports of older titles. And for somebody who does enjoy AA and AAA games from companies that aren’t Nintendo, they’re much better played on different systems.
What are the pros and cons of the steam deck in your opinion?
I wish I had gotten it SO much sooner. Take everything I liked about the switch with none of the downsides. Portability with so much more power, and a mind-blowing number of gaming options. Roughly as powerful as a base PS4 and able to play a good handful of AAA titles without issue (GTAV, RDR2, Elden Ring, etc.).
But one of the biggest reasons it’s become my go-to console over even my PS5 is the economics of it. Steam regularly has MASSIVE sales on their catalog. I bought FO3, New Vegas, and FO4 all for $10 (total, not apiece) about a month ago. Compared to switch games almost NEVER coming down in price, and even certain PS games retaining a $30+ price point for a few years, and it’s a steal. Plus, I’ve got emulation setup and am currently going down memory lane with lots of games from PS1/PS2 and GBA that just aren’t available anywhere else.
Lastly, for the games that the switch isn’t powerful enough for, I can stream them remotely from my PS5 with chiaki4deck, and for those that have a gaming PC, there’s sunlight/moonlight.
I no longer recommend a switch to anyone unless they absolutely want Mario/Zelda. And even then, there are ways to get that on deck.
EDIT: really the only cons are the price, digital only, and the purchase process.
Price - they start at $350 for the LCD model, but you’ll really want to get the OLED for better screen, WiFi, storage, and battery life. Those are around $500
Digital only - I now live in a place with good internet speeds, but I empathize with people who don’t. A year ago, my internet speed was roughly 5mb download/0.5mb upload. If I wanted to download a game, it would take literal days and throttle speeds for the whole house. Not having the option of buying physical copies of games if you have lousy internet would be a dealbreaker for me. If you’ve got good internet, this is a non-issue.
Purchase process - purchase process is annoying unless you’ve already got a steam account with some history of buying and playing games. Their store has anti-scalping algorithms in place, so if you create a steam account specifically to buy a deck, the purchase will go through and then be cancelled/refunded about 24 hours later. Then, you’ll have to go to support and message back and forth to get your account cleared to purchase. All in all, from the time that I initially tried to purchase, it was about a full week (due to 24-36 hours between support responses) for me to actually buy the deck. I appreciate their efforts to prevent scalping, but I wish there was a way to verify yourself during the initial purchase rather than having to deal with it on the backend.
and the purchase process.
Hell, I'd like to deal with the purchase process myself

I am in Mexico which is not even too far from the USA (supposing this is where the biggest market of the Steam Deck is).
I bought my Switch during the initial COVID lockdown because Animal Crossing had just released and I had the most severe FOMO I’ve ever had in my life.
It’s been away in storage for a few years now and only comes out when we want to play Mario Kart or Mario Party with friends.
I had a real long decision between picking up a switch or getting a steam deck.
I ended up getting the steam deck cause I knew if I got the switch I’d have to buy all the games full price while the steam deck has my 300+ game library already there.
Unfortunately I haven’t been able to play Pokémon in a very long time because of it, and nothing really fills that void.
But palworld?
I enjoyed palworld for the time I played it but it started feeling more like ark after a while
Me three, except I don't regret it
I bought a switch + zelda BotW new for $360, then sold both as a bundle on Offerup for $300 when I was done (basically playing the game just for the price of the game). Then a few years later, did the same thing for TotK. That's the good thing about Nintendo never budging on prices - they retain their value well as long as you keep them in good condition.
God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, Uncharted, The Last of Us and a few more are each alone worth the price of a PS5.
I just have a modded for pc version of the game.
I sold mine
Same. And I didn't even like BOTW. Was hoping for something like Phantom Hourglass, and was sadly disappointed. I barely use the Switch. Should probably just sell it.
I played it on Wii u. They were relatively cheap when botw released.
I ended up buying a switch anyway for ToTK
Switch has given me lots of great times. Nintendo exclusives are a different breed, especially as there is so many of them for every possible gaming interest. I still remember when sony did a 25 year collage of all their characters and the host from buzz was massive as well as characters from animaniacs. Like they had to add filler.
Ooh, me too. I barely got a Switch last year. I don’t game that much any more, I really only have one game I play now. So I didn’t want to spend the money on my “Zelda Machine” 😅 I knew it’d be the only game I played on it.
I finally got it, the Zelda edition too. I played BOTTW for the first time a few months ago, and I’ve avoided all spoilers these years. I’m taking my time through it, and like I thought, haven’t played in a few months. I always think of going back in.
Probably won’t buy Tears Of The Kingdome for another 5yrs 🤣
I bought a switch for my kids, and the zelda games are the only thing I have played on it.
I played BOTW and other games on switch. Haven’t been impressed with originals lately so I haven’t jumped back in. Also Xbox cloud gaming on my iPad itches the mobile scratch now
That newish Kirby game is really good.
Kirby and the forgotten land is fantastic but I wouldn’t call it newish
BOTW is such a a strange one as it was not even designed for the switch.
Same here. And after an hour of 2 I got sick of the weapon durability and never played it again.
This always bums me out because after like 5 hours you have so many good weapons it never becomes an issue. Such a sad reason not to play such a great game.
