Yeah I wàs looking into a cat feeder like that but then I realized my cat would destroy it in 10 minutes and food would be everywhere.
Need a stainless steel version you bolt to the ground.
Holy fuck!
Great story, thanks for posting.
You want the ground to be destroyed, too?
Use catproof ground. Usually made of the same material as the scratching post - they never touch this.
I had a cat with a water feeder. A BIG cat.
He liked the glug sound it would occasionally make as the water levels dropped. Rather than drinking extra water, he figured out that he could just bump it with his head.. glug glug. Of course this only works a few times till the water in the bowl is too high to continue glugging. Must have not been too comfortable headbutting it either.
So he started slamming it with his paw as well. I came home a few times to a knocked over jug and water across the floor. So I moved it out onto the deck, which just gave him room to ram it. I arrived home one day and the seam on the bottle had been split.
He was an absolutely massive cat. https://i.imgur.com/P7gXsLB.jpg
What a chonker
He was. His head was big enough that he had four finger widths of space between his ears.
Im sure he was a big sweety. Im sorry for your loss :(
Thanks, yes he was. My current cat is amazing too.
OMG. He looks just my shaggy used to. That cat was such a sweetheart, wouldn't hurt a fly. OK, actually he'd hunt down flies and bugs, also go batshit for birds, but I had no worries if kids approached him while I was out with him. He'd let them grab and cuddle him, he just liked the attention.
Aw - he was gorgeous - I love big squishy boys.
Yes, very squishy. He had dense fur like a sheep. Here is another photo of him for size comparison.
https://i.imgur.com/AUGccmw.jpg
You can see that he was not just a fat cat, he was freaking huge in build. For an examination of his sheer bulk:
He was quite a furry beast!
I have a big male tabby, but he is actually fat, 2 kg to go and the vet said he’s good. He’ll be 15 pounds at his healthy weight.
I bet brushing him was a big task!
That's not a task! That's an honour and a privilege.
What a unit. My current cat is a chocolate point short haired Himalayan at just below 30 lbs. I know how you feel.
That’s like my husky. We got her this puzzle toy where she is supposed to move the rope to get the treats to come out but she figured out that if she stands on the couch or the bed and just drops it the puzzle toy bounces and a bunch of toys come out. Still a puzzle, just a different kind of puzzle.
I have that too. My cat is too short to see there’s food in it even with the top level removed. She wakes me up and I gently nudge one bit of food down a level and then she’s off. Hasn’t realised I’m not required to make the food appear.
Can you post a video about their behaviour? The curiosity is killing me
This reminds me of a test they put toddlers in. They claim the girls outperform the boys. Basically it is a maze that you have to escape as quickly as possible. So the boys would spend the whole time trying to get out and they'd be timed. All of them figured out how to get out. Meanwhile the girls would reach the first obstacle and just start screaming until one of the researchers would pull them out of the maze.
Can I get a source on that? Sounds like an interesting study to read about.
I was cleaning my paw on purpose!
And just looking around, because I don't really care about treats
it is so painful to see
It knows that its inherent cuteness will get it treats one way or other.
This reminds me so much of myself writing high school exams and looking over at the future valedictorian writing theirs.
If you saw this and immediately related it to yourself then I'm so sorry. Keep your head up, Tiger.
hits head on low door frame
Yeah, I love how cats will clean themselves when they feel embarrassed (whether they actually feel the emotion or it's simply something we project, it's funny either way.)
/u/spez lies, Reddit dies. This comment has been edited/removed in protest of Reddit's absurd API policy that will go into effect at the end of June 2023. It's become abundantly clear that Reddit was never looking for a way forward. We're willing to pay for the API, we're not willing to pay 29x what your first-party users are valued at. /u/spez, you never meant to work with third party app developers, and you lied about that and strung everyone along, then lied some more when you got called on it. You think you can fuck over the app developers, moderators, and content creators who make Reddit what it is? Everyone who was willing to work for you for free is damn sure willing to work against you for free if you piss them off, which is exactly what you've done. See you next Tuesday. TO EVERYONE ELSE who has been a part of the communities I've enjoyed over the years: thank you. You're what made Reddit a great experience. I hope that some of these communities can come together again somewhere more welcoming and cooperative. Now go touch some grass, nerds. -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/

You leave her hanging. That's bad bro etiquette.
It's called a leapfrog action, or displacement activity.
I think she attempts to get the food and then licks her paw because she can smell biscuits on her paw from before. So she's trying to lick what she can get.
Cats don't tend to lick the bottom of their paw when they're cleaning, they usually lick the top/side of their 'forearm' and rub that on their face to clean.
rofl. Id be more worried but I think that cat can survive a week or two till he figures it out...
Lol, is that like a diet type feeder, been looking for something like that for my cat
Yes, it is! It's by the brand Catit. There's a lot of different food puzzles you can find online to help with weight loss and enrichment. The Slim Cat Ball is another good one.
I think you need to buy another one for that grey cat before he starves to death.
One with easy puzzles!
Like just a round bowl and the puzzle is to find it. Hopefully he can solve that one.

You can't charge extra if you simply call it a "bowl". It's a Starter Puzzle Treat-tizer. $79.99
Oh, that's what he wants. He's just pretending it's hard
Grey cat looks like he will survive another week or two, that or just start living off the scraps the other one spills...
Also serves as a feline IQ calculator. Results take weeks, measured in size. Your smart cat will remain fat while the dumb one gets slimmer and everyday more beautiful, all that extra grooming and all...
Cool, my cat is over weight and been trying to get her to lose weight for a while now
Do they have those in "Fat Old Man' style?
They're called Pringles and super glue. Glue that shit down to your table so you can't turn it over, and you'll never be able to get out more than a couple at a time. It's what I do, and the bonus is you just get tired of trying after a bit. I do go through tables pretty quickly though..
My hands are fairly dainty. I can reach the bottom of a Pringles can.

Mr. President?
This was unexpectedly and hilariously analogous.
I want to see before and after pictures of how it's worked for you.
That or let me buy you beers.
the easiest way to help a cat lose weight is to make sure you are feeding them as close to a 100% meat diet as possible. no rice or vegetable fillers in their food, cats are obligate carnivores and do not digest vegetables like humans do. that and portion control, but the no vegetables/rice/grains is pretty important too.
Also, make sure to consult with your vet!
I put my cat on a meaty diet and she almost died by losing too much weight too fast; cats bodies do not digest fat well at all and it floods their liver with fat cells.
Worst animal experience of my life.
TIL and I dont even have a cat.
Glad I could help. It’s colloquially called fatty liver disease - they become lethargic, typically have to have a feeding tube, and placed on an extremely high caloric diet.
It was like taking care of a toddler because I had to feed her every two hours.
If your cat starts hiding from you or their ears turn yellow, take them to a vet ASAP. It means they’re sick.
Ah I’ll see what I can do
Vet here - while it's true that cats are obligate carnivores, I do not recommend to feed 100% meat only. It is not nutritionally complete
Yeah, put a cat outside and they eat grass and things like that too.
They eat grass because it helps them throw up the hairballs from all the stuff they ingest during grooming. Every indoor cat should have a flower pot with grass available to help it with that.
Not really the whole reason but alright.
if price is an issue, fancy feast is good. it is by no means the best quality meat, but at the same time, it is cheap, decent enough, and they have had 0 recalls ever as far as i'm aware. you could probably feed her two cans of it a day too and she'd lose weight
The easiest way is to feed them less food.
Switching to partial wet food also helps I’m heard. Better for their kidneys to eat food with moisture, and I think it has less calories?
But everyone with a fat cat — please listen. Cats need to eat way less than you realize. If you try to put them on a diet and it doesn’t work, it’s not a diet. It means they’re STILL eating too much! And all you have to do is feed them less and wait and see if it works. If it doesn’t... feed them eeeeeven less.
It’s frustrating that something so simple and easy gets drawn out so long. Not losing weight? Feed less. Easy.
Don’t listen to those people telling you to switch up diet to meat. If someone is already struggling to feed small portions, throwing stuff besides calories into the mix is nuts. No idea what they were thinking with that advice. “You don’t understand how calories work — lets throw every other nutritional aspect into the mix for you to juggle!” No, just stick with store bought cat food, it already has nutritional needs balanced. Just feed less of it.
Have you tried giving it less food
Have you ever tried to give a cat less food? They know
These are also handy if you're looking at changing kibbles - I got one recently and loaded the cups with 3 different kinds of kibble. It's not quite a fair test because of the different sizes/shapes of kibble, but when one of them gets eaten noticeably more than the others over a few days it's a good indicator.
Not great for little round pellet kibbles though, I think those are a little hard to get a grip on and pull out.
I thought it was so your neighbors could tell when your cats are eating at 2 a.m....
Also, the Catit stuff comes in funny boxes with cutouts so if you cut out where it's indicated on the box and your cat inevitably sticks his head through said cutout from inside the box, he will be an astronaut or a fireman or a ballerina! Great company.
Just take a plastic bottle and cut some small holes in it, just large enough for bits of food, then fill the bottle with cat food. The cat will have to roll it over the floor to get the food out piece by piece.
I was gonna say, Why would you wanna teach your cat to stick its paws in cups, but that makes sense!!
Watch out, if your pet is too smart it won't work.
Oh, MUFFIN! Did he figure it out eventually?
Yes, he finally actually stuck his paw into the cup and got a couple kibbles. :)
I was waiting to hear this man!
I know which one would be my boycat (Rex) and which would be the girlcat (Dorian). Dorian isn't dumb at all but Rex is one of the smartest cats I've ever known.
I have a bit and a girl as well. I don't know whether she's stupid, but the girl has absolutely no will to learn. It's like the thought doesn't enter her brain that she can try or do new things.
The boy will try and do anything and everything, nothing is off limits. He was trying to open the front door within weeks of watching me do it. She didn't even realise she could jump for over a year. She would just clamber about...
inbreeding maybe?
"God it smells so good... I am so hungry... *lick lick lick* ... so... hungry... *lick lick lick* "
Awe... The dumb one is so pretty though.
They always are.
This seriously made me smile so much, thanks OP!
This was my Riker and Pretzel. Pretzel was so smart. Too smart for her own good much of the time. Riker was ... well ... she was so very pretty, but not real bright. Definitely not the brightest crayon in the box. Let's face it, she tried to jump out of a closed window to catch the birds outside. Multiple times. She just never learned how this "windows and doors" business worked. Meanwhile, Pretzel worked out how to open the doors by herself. They've both crossed the Rainbow Bridge now, and I do miss them.
My current kitties, Widget is pretty smart but she definitely has issues. Sweetpea is in equal parts genius and moron. Worked out how to operate the pull-string mouse toy by herself ... but also has attacked her own tail, and has also done the "tried to jump through closed windows to catch birds" (though to be fair, she did only do that twice and from there worked out how this "windows" business works).
I really enjoyed how you wrote this. Made me giggle and was fun to read. I want to hear more stories of riker, pretzel, sweatpea, and widget. They all sound so lovely and cute!!
He’s going to learn the same way. Trail and error baby
Pinky and the brain
My strategical mind beats yours in every way possible
I like how he keeps trying to play it off. “Mmmm this sure is good kibble. Man, I am stuffed.”
Hahah I was thinking “oh I always make exaggerated movements before I like my paws. Odd you’ve never noticed”
I'll just eat the crumbs.
I only see one cat.
I believe the other animal is called a "floof." They look somewhat catlike, but lack the predatory cunning and condescending aloofness of a real cat.
after the cat failed to paw out the food, he licked his hand anyways trying to pretend nobody saw that
Don't worry. Life/nature finds a way. Saw it in a big lizard movie.
He doesn't understand! Be kind to him!
This is me at life, just pretending like I am know what I am doing. But failing...
The gray and white one looks exactly like my cat
Same, well she's no longer with us but made it to 19. Would like to know the breed name though. I was only ever told 'Domestic long hair'.
Yep, he's a domestic long hair. Unlike most dogs, cats usually are not specific breeds
I have this one! One of my cats (the fattest) immediately was digging treats out. I had to have some patience and start without the cups for the second fattest... she got it after a few days. The third fattest has zero interest even with treats involved.
I love how you rate them ny fattest. Lol
The not so smart one looks so baked
Survival of the fittest.
When you pretend to be working during a math test you don't know how to do
Me on a diet pretending I'm eating something delicious
Your long haired cat just has the looks. A bit of a bimbo though
I have this for my cat because she gobbles up any dry food. Every time I use it, she just gives me this WTF stare and walks away. It's like she knows why i use it.
I like how it reaches with its paw, fails, then licks the paw as if to pass off it didn't fail it was just licking its paw.
This explains why one cat is a fat ass.
One of your cats is cleaner than the other
That's like me on a diet
Give it a few weeks and you might be able to correlate bodyweight with intelligence.
Ya snooze, ya loose.
Cats don’t like sharing food like that.
I think my cat would go on a hunger strike if i introduced a bowl like this.
In before they just figure out if they turn the whole thing over they get ALL the food.
Maybe the other one is just a germaphobe
That cat has a Batman mask.
Ones inbred
One of your cats is fatter than the other too. Which one is the smarter one?
Funny how its trying to play it off
I like the other cat though
"I didn't even want food, I was just licking my paw"
Thats awesome😂
The dumb one looks like a Tibetan Sand Fox
Aww it's like Ron and Hermione
What is this witchcraft?
How are you doing that paw flick.
What?
Leviosaaaa?
Silly one is like:
Is this how you doing it?
Like this?
Am I doin' it?
How about this?
You sure you doin' it right?
Now? Aw shucks.
DERP 😅😅
That's what I look like at parties trying to fit in...
at least she is pretty
That's so me at work pretending I know what the hell I'm doing
Aww poor stupid cat. I can feel it feeling stupid, we've all been there before smh.
One of your cats is fatter than the other
That cat won’t make it in the real world
It's a good thing they are cute.
Aww. I wonder if it has vision problems. :(
Haha, he is still young and can see just fine. Just couldn't quite figure out that he needed to stick his paw IN the cups
No, one of your cats is smart, the other is retarded.
"How are you.. how are you doing that?"
Maybe he has A.D.D. with a touch of O.C.D.? He gets distracted and has to wash his paws after he touches something.
Maybe lol. He is always grooming himself
Cats do just do that a lot, but my favourite is when they preen/groom after they just derped, as if they are embarrassed. E.G. Fall off the couch, fail at a jump, or run into something. Immediately give themselves a few licks as if to say, "I meant to do that, what of it."
Kinda looks like that's what's going on here, though it could simply be trying to lick / eat food that it is expecting to be on it's paw.
Seems like she didn't have as easy of an access to the button as the other one did.
Thats a nice way of saying one of the cats is a dumbass lol
Makes me sad.
And soon one will be fatter than the other
Plus he has desert digital camo
and it shows..
Cat found dead later that evening
STOP RECORDING AND HELP HIM, YOU MONSTER.
I'm not surprised. Pedigree cats weren't bred for brains. You want something that can find its way out of a wet plastic bag? Get yourself a European Shorthair.
Yes, but one is VERY clean.
It made my day.
Fucking Kevin that's not how you eat
One of your cats is fatter than the other
You can so see it
“I’m over this crap, Karen”
Looks more like a pecking order thing
real world epitome
This is what is referred to as a "teaching moment", OP
I had a treat discus for my beagle where if she batted it around and made it wobble, treats would come out. She figured it out real quickly. About a week later, I came home to a large hole gnawed into it.
Both of my babies are too dumb to use this toy. I bought it for them ages ago and filled it with dry food.
I had to dig it out myself.
Looks more like one of your cats is polydactile or has an extra digit so its mitten is too big to scoop.
Ah, its big brain time
My friend's cat has the Brain Mover Trixie food puzzle. When she's finished eating the food in the side tray, she keeps pushing it in and pulling it back out expecting more food to somehow magically appear in the tray.
I think white beard needs glasses.
Poor little bean doesn't quite grasp it
What if it just wanted to know what plastic tastes like so turtles don't have to experience it alone.
Great. So now we know which of your cats is going to college right? 😝
Your cat might actually be retarded. No joke. Animals can be too.
This is how I'm going to.kill you. I'm gonna let you simmer until you are tinted brown. No raw meat before I eat
That's just sad.
Survival of the cattest
Oh no. It's retarded.
My tortiseshell eats like that too its really weird.
We have a machine that gives out a bit of food Everytime a remote button, that is sitting on the ground, is pressed.
One of our dogs finally got to the point of pressing the button but the other dog ran for the food. These things apparently only work for a single dog
What is this called and where can I find one? One of my girls is quite the piggy and fat as a result.
Poor floofy cat.
Your video really stand out amongst the masses

I have the little tower maze where they have to knock the treats down three levels to get to them.
My male cat will patiently twist his head sideways and poke them down slowly, my female quickly figured out she can just knock the entire thing over and all the treats come out!
