Games Unplayable without Fallout 1st

Should’ve been around when the stash box limit was 400, and there was no 1st…no scrap box, no ammo box.

Define unplayable? I've never struggled with my inventory and I'm level 124 atm.

I just sell some of the surplus junk I have when I get to 1100/1200 and I don't keep any food/aid in my stash

Hate to be the bearer of bad news. The problem isn't the game mechanics. It's you.

This isn't a personal attack, it's a matter of perspective and learning.

It comes with experience. As you continue playing, you learn new tricks to improve your own quality of life, etc.

Identifying what is worth keeping, selling, scripping, scrapping, etc goes a LONG way.

I played this game for 3 years without having any issues, and only finally got 1st just so I could enjoy private/custom servers and get the tents.

Some helpful advice:

If you don't need it, scrap it, if you can't scrap it, scrip it, if you can't scrip it, sell it, and if you can't sell it, drop it.

Being a loot-goblin is just not an option in fallout 76 and it's a fact you need to get use to.

Certain player builds also facilitate this a bit easier than others believe it or not.

My longest run without fallout 1st was playing as a power armor/heavy gunner build using gatling plasmas.

Because of the nature of how I was using my scrap, etc to maintain my gear, ammo and camp, my stash was always at medium-fullness, so I had room to breathe. I scrapped/scripped/sold anything that I did not explicitly need for my build.

When I stored gear "for a rainy day", I prioritized what would benefit my build the most, and downgraded all the mods to standard/ultra-light to reduce the item weight to absolute minimum possible before stashing. This also gained me a ton of extra storage space in my stash.

As long as you practice self-discipline, you'll be able to manage your inventory, and for the love of Atom Above, try to remember, you don't need to loot EVERYTHING.

In 6 years I've only had 3 months of 1st - you can absolutely get by just fine without it. There's a long (LONG) learning curve of identifying what to keep/sell/scrap/scrip, but there's nothing mission-critical in the FO1st package.

I hope we 1st Supporters become more benefits like now. You can play it without 1st but you must learn how.

Sounds like someone might not be scrapping junk. Junk weights 10x more than the components it breaks down into. You also don't need every weapon and armor you come across. Legendaries get exchanged for a currency called scrip at train stations.

You also shouldn't store food in your stash. Most of it spoils and stash weight isn't affected by perks. So ammo that you aren't selling or using has no purpose. Same with chems. Make sure you smelt any ore into scrap and make sure you don't have excessive gunpowder. It's super easy to make gunpowder as needed at a chem station.

Are you scrapping your junk before depositing?

You can also just sub for 1 month, get the Atoms, stuff all that scrap/ammo and then dont renew it. I think you can use those atoms to get the season pass and you keep all the scrap and ammo that you were able to stuff in the box.

Its not unplayable but theres definitely a lot of premium stuff that makes the game easier for sure. I came back recently and I just found out about the fusion core charger and picked that up yesterday.

I somewhat agree but also disagree.

For the most part I play without FO1st, I have purchased it for 2 months in the past 6 years.

I think the game is most enjoyable with FO1st but still enjoyable without it, the game kind of becomes an inventory management simulator, especially if you’re early game where the best advice is “only hold 50 junk” which is inconvenient considering weapons break so fast and cost so much.

But if you do get past the inconveniences then the game can be a lot of fun, I recommend using mules then wait for the free 1st trials.

I have 1st and I still constantly run into this anyway. It's probably in part because I came over from FO4 and it's hard to break the habit of picking up everything that isn't nailed down... But while paying for 1st definitely helped me a lot, I'm still always staring at storage too and getting rid of bunches of stuff I'd like to keep or sell.

I really wish stuff for sale in your vendor didn't count toward the limit. Now THAT would help.

I feel like I get more out of 1st in terms of cosmetic stuff than logistical stuff.

You are stashing too much crap - throw most of it out, lol

No it’s not “unplayable”. I’ve played literally since launch and have had F1st maybe 10% of the time.

I've put in probably around 40 hours and don't have 1st and still am not even at 1000/1200 on stash. Did you not build a CAMP yet or something? Most of your wood and other resources are really only good for cooking or building so you shouldn't need to waste space on that.

I played a while without it. Got it for a year to try.. I mean, it's $100 for an everydayish entertainment product for a year. Reasonable, despite what people think sometimes. I spend more than that a month on pot.

I wouldn't play without it again.

Here are some tips for inventory management I've learned playing for the past year without having FO1st:

1) Scrap all your junk items every time you are near a workbench. Junk items weigh something like 10x what their components do. Saves a ton of space. Unless you are collecting a piece of junk for a specific purpose (sucha s my teddy bear museum) they are all more useful as parts.

2) Same goes for weapons and armor. If you aren't immediately planning on using it, scrap it. Scrapping weapons and armor is how you learn mods for them. And this game throws so much of them at you, there's no point in saving stuff for higher levels.

3) Yup, even legendaries. Unless it is something you're definitely going to use, take it to the nearest legendary machine and exchange it for scrip. You'll most likely be rolling (and re-rolling, and re-rolling, etc) your own legendary items as you hit the higher levels anyway.

If you're doing a decent job of # 1&2 you should have some wiggle room to hold onto the occasional extra weapon that you might want to fool around with for fun.

4) Power armor pieces must be on a chasis. Chasis weigh 10 lbs regardless of what pieces you have on it. Carrying or stashing loose power armor pieces is murder on your inventory weight. And again, only keep stuff you're sure you're going to use.

5) I know it goes against ever instinct previous Fallout games have instilled in us, but don't hoard ammo you won't use. Some of them are heavy. You can't scrap ammo or sell it to NPC vendors, so if you have some to get rid of just dump it in the nearest donation box.

Basically, effectively managing inventory space without FO1st is a matter of breaking the hoarding habits the old games taught us. The good news is, very little in this game is actually scarce enough to need to be hoarded.

I suggest making a list of what you need and get rid of everything else.

Usual weight suspects are: Hundreds of Stims, RadX & Radaway, dozens of grenades, Explosive ammo, energy ammo, not storing power armor on a chassis, fusion/plasma cores, not disassembled scrap.

Get the perk 3 Star 'Hiking through' and you can carry all food on your own. Same goes for 3 Star 'Travelling pharmacy'.

I’ve been playing on and off for ages now and I’ve never felt like I needed it. Far from unplayable.

Dang I make a post because my stash filled up 2 days into the game and I get down voted for being unknowledgeable in a new game. Instead of hating why not try to help out a new player.... At lvl 20ish with no str, weight cards, or F1st the stash is horrible.

One major thing someone mentioned that was super helpful, was that you can put higher level PA pieces on an owned chassis and let it time out back into your inv. That was like 200+ weight right there. Then the weight reduction cards, diluting stims/radaway and scrapping higher lvl stuff (wish you could hang onto some).

Thx for all of the help most of you guys are awesome! I got most of it under control, the main problem was not being a high enough level in the end for perks and the above paragraph. It's not too bad now, BUT.. it would still be better with 1st.

Ignore literally every single person saying "I'm level 200" or whatever. When you get to endgame you'll NEED 1st to play. The only thing left at the end is trading. And the only way to trade in this game is to have inventory of supplies to sell in bulk. Yeah the game is fun at the beginning playing as a solo nomad and deciding what to keep, but inevitably you'll get to where you have nothing left to do but hoard things and trade. Take it from somebody who's been playing since beta with multiple characters over level 300 and multiple mules full of inventory.

I absolutely would have stopped playing without FO1st. After having it for a few months I definitely see how I could only buy it for a month and then have that last me for at least 6 months. It would actually be kinda nice ignoring ammo and scrap drops knowing I had no place to put them and plenty to last me.
