THIS is the ONLY time JK Rowling has mentioned Harry Potter on Twitter this year, and it’s THIS:
🇲🇮🇸🇨I mean I’m not gonna debate you on her morals which suck for sure and I can’t speak to the quality but their point was that she’s hardly a one hit wonder when the other stuff does well from a sales stand point. Like it or not 50 shades was a hit and evidently you can say they same about these things she’s done post potter. It does speak to our overall taste as a society but again different conversation
history will remember her as a one wit wonder (and then a lunatic hatemonger) because the galbraith stuff -- while it sold well -- had absolutely zero cultural penetration. nobody talks about it. of course they adapted it, because it sold well. but nobody CARES about it.
"one hit wonder" is more about perception than reality. if you have five songs that play well on radio but ten years later only one is remembered, you're a one hit wonder.
Does that make Tolkien a one hit wonder?
I'm not sure that's quite the same; Tolkien was a college professor who wrote a few books on the side. It wasn't exactly his day job.
Your response is almost the opposite of the other persons, while agreeing.
they're right that JRRT liked to think of himself as a professor and philologist first and an author second. but after a point, LOTR did completely take over his life, and history will remember him for that before anything else. how could it not?
