How tf is this “offensive”?
🇵🇷🇴🇹🇪🇸🇹Unless they are scissoring I doubt it’s bad
It's pages of the Bible and on it they have written in rainbow paint "god loves you, but not enough to save you" and there are rainbow drips that look like blood...
wow that IS good art. definitely conveys the Religious Trauma LGBTQ+ folk tend to have.
The best part is that if the bigots hadn't raised a stink the art would have been seen by maybe 20 people and then been forgotten.
But the bigots not only revealed they were bigots to the entire world (which may affect future business deals, social interactions, etc, plus how they are remembered). They also launched the art into public view, who knows how many thousands saw it, discussed it, and made other bigots uncomfortable because of them raising a stink.
The Streisand effect strikes again!
The most ironic part is that because the phenomenon has so popularly become known as The Streisand Effect, that whole situation with the picture of her house will be even more ingrained in our modern zeitgeist. It’s a Streisand Effect within a Streisand Effect.
It's Streisands all the way down!
Always has been
*pulls trigger*
Streiception!
I WOULD NEED A GUARENTEE
I never searched up the house until you mentioned it. You're doing your part in the Streisandception
Yo dawg I hear you like the streisand effect.... So we did a streisand effect on the streisand effect just for you.
I’d never heard of the Streisand Effect but I just googled it and ended up looking at a picture of her house…
Yup! This student is likely guaranteed a scholarship now to a school for art and also likely to have someone pay her thousands to own said artwork…it’s almost like within their attempt to censor her, they made her more famous
Oh, man, if I were wealthy I'd pay for their schooling in exchange for that piece.
If she's smart, she'll post things to social media and capitalize on the whole thing.
looks at post
Hol' up...
Interesting how that works. It's almost like being as offensive as possible can develop a cult following and get a person elected into office. /s
Clicking the link above, it says almost 30k viewers!
I bet she’s gonna get an art career locked in if that’s what she wants to pursue. Hell yeah!
I suspect you are mistaken about the religious thinking its a bad thing to be criticised for their beliefs. Its a badge of pride to be "persecuted".
Everyone here is getting what they want by being g given the opposite of what they ask for which is profoundly strange if you think about it...
That's so true. They think they're just like Jesus when it happens. It's scary.
Which is odd; I can’t think of many groups that are less like Jesus.
Remember when Jesus tried to use his position on a school board to ban a teenaged girl’s artwork?
At least 34309 at the time of this comment
True, reminds me of the trolley problem, allow the painting to be how it is and like 20 people will see it, or try to ban it, but it will be seen by thousands of people around the world.
Seriously. Cuts deep.
Thus why it offends “””Christians”””
Genuinely fantastic.
Their outrage only stands to further her point as well.
Lol The people freaking out about completely failing to miss the point. This piece is so perfect.
No they get the point and they know they’re pieces of shit.
Some of them sure; but in my experience most of these religious people have zero self awareness and would completely miss the point that their condemnation of this piece only proves the point of the piece. They just don’t think like that.
Exactly. Many won’t notice the true message because all they can see is a criticism of their religion.
The number one indicator for religiosity, nationalism, and conservatism in general is the reduced cognitive ability to self-reflect and empathize with others. Along with overactive fear and disgust centers of the brain.
They are mentally unwell in a fundamental way. Partially due to environmental and genetic factors, but mostly because they were raised to be that way because it makes them easier to control and rile up.
I'd hang that on my wall. I really like it.
You know your art is good when it causes an intense emotional reaction in the viewer(s).
Every artist should aspire to produce something like this
But think about how much trauma those poor Christians will feel, they are the most harassed out of any group of people ever created. /s
Religion is incredibly fragile and can't abide a simple coloring page let alone a fine work like this unless it depicts proper fealty to their omnipotent and omniscient God who has a chip on his shoulder about criticism.
Even more so because it's from someone in grade 12. She hasn't even been to art school yet, but she sure will now.
That look fantastic.
We do hope they can show this art off to the public
Due to all the complaints, many more people are seeing it.
Pretty good actually. I think it's incredibly ironic that the same people who were complaining about their speech being suppressed are now the ones pushing for laws to ban books and art from libraries and museums. Religious nutjobs have always bitched, but I hate seeing them get what they want. They complained that music was satanic, tried to ban violent video games, etc. I wish we as a society weren't held back by these crackpots.
They were always the ones activity trying to suppress free speech. They just confuse people telling them their ideas and opinions are shitty with being censored.
From "Fort Defiance" Highschool.
Just a little too defiant for their liking.
That’s such phenomenal work
That's pretty good
That is amazing
That conveys its meessage well while still being pretty mild.
It's amazing.
Ok, thats metal as hell. Maybe not death metal, but baby metal for sure.
They're right, that doesn't belong in a public school. It belongs in an art gallery. It's beautiful work.
I get it. They want it banned because it doesn’t say god is magnanimous and all
Well, anyone who has read the Bible will know that God is certainly not that magnanimous, the wrath of God is one of the great themes of the Bible lol.
But at the same time, the whole point of the sacrifice of Christ was to atone for the world and free humanity from that wrath. There's a reason things change a lot from the Old Testament at the point where Jesus starts going around telling everyone that nothing is more important than loving one another. If today's Christians actually strived to live up to the model of Jesus and the message he was spreading, it would be a totally different world. The hypocritical hatred they choose to show and spread is a complete rejection of Jesus.
On the one hand what you say is true, on the other hand the book of Revelation exists, so... I guess God's wrath hasn't completely subsided yet lol.
Even so, there is no doubt that if Christian people fulfilled all of that about loving their neighbors, the world would be a much better place, and I guess that this is what the Biblical Jesus wanted.
The Book of Revelation is widely considered to be symbolic, an allegorical lesson to the first churches, and not meant to be taken literally... even among many religious leaders, experts, and even some entire denominations of Christianity.
But there again is the problem with (self-proclaimed) Christians these days. They read a book about a man who spread love and acceptance, went around teaching basically every lesson he taught through the use of metaphor and parables, and then for some reason adamantly maintain that their translated Bible is the literal Word of God and is meant to be interpreted as such...makes absolutely no sense.
There's definitely reasons I don't go to church as an adult.
Well, although there have always been many allegories in Revelation, there are many Christians, especially Nationalist Christians (although they suck lol), who interpret it literally, but hey, I guess this is a situation of how you want to read the Bible.
Still for the most part I agree with you, it would be nice if people followed the main message of the New Testament of loving everyone, but you know, intolerant people love to use any excuse to be bigots.
Still, I feel like this is a moment of No true Scotsman fallacy, since there are so many alternative versions of Christianity lol.
Yeah, agreed. It's a lot easier to absolve oneself of the guilt of bigotry if you can just insist you're "following God's will"...instead of just being a hateful asshole.
How is this "lesbian" art?
Decent art then… it causes a reaction. Just not one the church wants.
That's genuinely beautiful
well thats actually true ..., so whats offensive about that? being called out for their bullshit?, at least they should own being the freaking bigots they are ...
if anything religion should be banned from this world, it doesnt server any good purpose more than indoctrination and separation of the human kind
It’s exactly the message being preached by the rightwing bigot churches
Damn near an exact quote.
Even if it's offensive, arts not allowed to be offensive?
Aren't these people the ones always accusing us of being sensitive snowflakes who need a safe space?
What happened? Is your god a very special little snowflake?
Only conservative speech is allowed to be offensive. Dropping hard r’s is fine, but having a rainbow pin on your shirt is a physical attack justifying a deadly response.
Projection, Delusion, and Prosecution.
Its all they know.
That's the thing right there. Art is about expression and making the artist and the viewer feel something.
I can absolutely see how this piece can be seen as offensive to some. But it is presenting a feeling in a way that is not lewd or vulgar and so should be allowed even into a school art show.
If this art is offensive to you then maybe you should reflect on why it is offensive to you and why the artist made it. Or you could just keep walking, the physical form of keep scrolling if you see something you don't like that's not hurting anyone.
Art should in theory be allowed to be offensive. The problem is that you get people making things with no purpose other than to be offensive and saying oh no, it’s art so it’s allowed.
Truth that makes Conservatives feel bad about themselves is offensive to them.
You're not allowed to be critical of Christianity in America according to Christians in America.
I think it's worse than that. Gay people existing and people who are happy while not being Christian is offensive to some Christians in America
When I was a kid, it eas heavily ingrained that people who aren't Christian are truly and deeply unhappy people and will never be happy unless they know God's love.
What a load of galloping bullshit.
Christo fascism has gotten so bad in the US through the pandemic that there would be some idiot petitioning against this just for having "God" written on the same artwork as rainbows.
But god gave us the rainbow. As I kind of "sorry, I may have overreacted, have this pretty rainbow 🌈, promise I won't flood the entire earth again".
You know, after the flood that killed absolutely everyone and everything. Well, except the creatures in the ark of noah. And the ocean creatures. And the Scots (40 days and 40 nights of rain, pffft, that's a dry autumn).
40 days and 40 nights of rain, pffft, that's a dry autumn.
I read this in Sir Billy Connolly’s voice
Yes that is why I said they were idiots, though that is obviously putting it very mildly.
Ask any Christian and they’ll tell you how they’re constantly persecuted…. I guess because people exist that think they’re stupid.
And yet not a peep when Trump repurposed Lee Greenwood's cheesy Bible with the Constitution in it for $50-$100
All it takes to offend a Christian is to ask them to understand they hurt you or asking them to do something nice for anyone else
Merely not being Christian is enough to offend many of them. I lost most of my family when they found out I didn’t believe anymore, just as Jesus said to.
Jesus would never stand for this "do onto others as you would have them do onto you" BS! (/s)
It makes them think. Which is bad
Her artwork about being shunned as a gay person is... shunned.
surprise surprise
Conservatives don’t like to be made to feel they’re bad people, then they go and do something like this to try and justify how good they perceive themselves to be, while also making themselves look like fascists.
They say people are soft because they act against their hate crimes and violent acts but they feel all crybaby because someone whos diferent EXISTS
These are the same people who whine that liberals (or anyone different from them) are all "snowflakes" who need a "safe space". They then go ballistic at the slightest criticism of their religion or politics, in absolutely zero self-awareness.
If they didn't have double-standards, they'd have no standards at all!
Yea the hypocrisy is just a testament to how much faith they have. That they can hold two obviously contradictory positions but justify it through their faith OBVIOUSLY means they have so much more faith than you. It's sickening
It's projection. They, in fact, are the delicate snowflakes.
Delicate little Baby boys
Our very existence offends them and they also can't stand being criticized.
How dare you point out that I treated you poorly!
Well you see, when one's entire worldview revolves foremost around them being the indisputable good guys, any reproach is considered an attack on their entire belief system. They would have the world burn to see those calling them out in the flames.
As someone who escaped my upbringing in evangelical Christianity I can say you hit the nail right on the head.
For some it extends even further. I had a guy who was greek orthodox tell me it was integral to his identity. Even in the most positive light, a part of an identity that asks for people to suffer and hope it works out, lest they suffer in hell for all eternity. It is frightening how deep some people can be brainwashed into thinking shit like this is okay. It’s socially acceptable and romanticized abuse with a different god damn name. The greatest trojan horse in all of history.
Because people who cause religious trauma don't like being held accountable for it.
Because God always forgives them if they transgress, because somehow the transgression of hating on LGBTQ+whatevs people is justified if god doesn't like them... or something. Idk, i'm not even going to pretend that I believe a god would even care.
If their God existed, I'd rather see it begging for forgiveness from humanity. Their own holy book portrays their "loving" god as a genocidal monster.
Indeed. I don't even believe it's actually there in the first place. If that's true, all you have here is bigotry and hate... actually, that's exactly what it is anyway lol
Lets ban Christianity.
Its offensive.
All they seem to want is to be able to call themselves persecuted, so in a weird way, banning christianity is exactly what they want.
Real
I think I feel this way about most religions. Especially Christians and Catholics, lot of them just going thru the motions so they can claim to be better than everyone else.
Well if we could see the actual artwork perhaps that would be easier to form an opinion
Thank you! I can understand how holier than thou Christians would be offended and triggered. They deserve to be triggered.
Maybe if Christians stopped hating gay people we wouldn’t need art about Christians hating gay people
I guess they hated to be confronted by their own words.
If heaven's populated by narcs and busybodies, I think I'm good.
I think there was one Native American chief that got burned on the stake by the conquistadors, but they asked him if he wants to be baptized before so he could go to heaven. He asked if people like them go to heaven, and when they said yes he told them that it’s the last place he wants to be in (I think that how that goes? I might be wrong it’s like a story I half remember from a meme so it may not be accurate)
Hatuey, a Haitian (maybe? Looks like maybe driven out of somewhere else, but famous for fighting the Spanish in Haiti) indigenous leader.
Doesnt even come off "lesbian" in the themes tbh. It has more things that make me think the artist has lost someone or is struggling with how they see themself. And again, the reasons for these dark themes, from my admittedly brief glance through the artworks, doesnt seem obviously "lesbian".
Such a weird thing for the magazine to say. Unless the artist is the one to tell them that's why shes being discriminated against.
I'm guessing because of the rainbow colors but even then that's a stretch
For additional context, the words are from the lyrics of the song "Sun Bleached Flies" by an artist performing under the character name of Ethel Cain, who (iirc) was created to perform a collection of songs about the experience of growing up as a queer femme in a repressive/oppressive christian (I think specifically southern baptist?) environment. The artist who performs as Ethel is a trans woman IRL who has said the character is not meant to be explicitly trans or cis, but act as a sort of vessel for the listener to put themselves in the position of being someone young and queer and feeling trapped in that situation.
I only heard of Ethel recently, but she apparently has a solid following, and those aware of her and the song would see the message behind this art piece pretty clearly. The girl who created the image is also an out and open lesbian, and while the piece isn't necessarily about the experience of dealing with religious trauma being wlw/Sapphic and coming from a christian background, the description for the piece includes
This piece is representative of the idea that growing up queer meant you couldn’t be saved by God. I grew up in a religious background and that influenced this project.
Oh...come on...it screams lesbian, with the drawing of hands....and the words....and the um...you...the other stuff too. I mean...it's so obvious.
Everybody knows only lesbians have hands. /s(just in case)
I'm a cis male and didnt read the artist's bio so I was projecting my own pov.
Now that I have, it's a bit more obvious that a lesbian would have made this art however, the art I think is still general enough in its themes that it speaks to a lot of povs.
It's very obviously lgbt themed. God loves you, but won't save you from the hatred you face due to being lgbt.
And the rainbow colors.
No idea why they say lesbian, I see it lgbt coded but not specifically lesbian.
Those pages she’s using are from the Bible. I’m sure that’s what they’re saying is offensive. Desecrating a bible. I think her art is wonderful.
Didnt catch that at first. But yeah not lesbian.
Sucks that the christians were able to censor the artist. It's only okay to be a snowflake when it's christians because they're oppressed, or something.
Artist’s description of her art.
religious trauma, impact of growing up queer in a religious background, can’t be saved
red acrylic paint around rosary to show evil in the eyes of god, rainbow acrylic to show devotion vs identity
Blending of red paint to show evil and devotion, layering of Bible pages to show destruction of concepts
This piece is representative of the idea that growing up queer meant you couldn’t be saved by God. I grew up in a religious background and that influenced this project. The idea of the glowing red cross is to represent evil in the eyes of God and the bleeding rainbow represents devotion vs identity. Overall the piece gets across the message I want it to, even if it is a little in your face. I wish I had made the rosary more detailed but I’m glad I spent most of my time in the hands and drips. I think this was a successful piece and states what I want it to.
Literally uses the rainbow bleeding to symbolize queerness. Specifically lesbian is because the artist was specifically lesbian, but it’s pretty obviously a piece of queer art
Thanks. I don’t find it offensive really..
Me either
Ok I get why they're offended. But it's fucking true. As an ex Christian myself, God loves all But if you do something that you want to do and doesn't harm anyone he's like no fuck you go to hell
How can you love someone but still make them suffer for eternity
Thank you for leaving Christianity, convince your loved ones to do so as well.
The last time I tried, they threw me into a mental hospital
Yeah cultists are like that
That's literally on point.
I'm sorry, Christians, that this artist held up a mirror to you and you didn't like what you saw. Have you considered maybe being a better person?
Looks like a slam dunk 1st amendment case
That's pretty metal! Love it.
I mean, it's not wrong.
I had a Christian tried to tell me that a statue was offensive to him. I had to explain that the statue was of a Christian Saint.
Protestants have been objecting to catholic saints and iconography for centuries.
Yeah. But he was under the impression it was demonic somehow? I can't remember the full conversation. It was a weird conspiracy theory laiden argument.
I worked for a religious based escape room and had someone say the rooms there were demonic. The storyline to the rooms were so poorly done, nobody can tell it'sa Christian company but it's also decidedly not demonic either.
Also don't judge me. They were paying me $3 more an hour than everyone else was.
“We don’t like be reminded of how terribly we treat people who are different!”-Christians
Who's the snowflake now?
It was always them. Every accusation is a confession from these people.
The same mf’s that call people too soft nowadays get upset by rainbows.
Seeing the actual art, the only reason they're offended is because they're being called out.
As a former Christian: it’s not offensive to Christians, it’s offensive to homophobic people (who are so spineless they have to hide behind a group)
Conservative Christian’s are the ones whining, and that’s because it’s against their politics. Nothing to do with Catholics. The only thing I could think of is the defacing of a bible, which isn’t really cool. Not my problem, I guess.
What a bunch of hypocrites. They need to keep their noses in their religion and leave the rest of us the fuck alone. Don’t like it, don’t look at it.
*Keep their noses in their religion and their hands out of our children’s pants
Fixed it for ya
I’m a Christian. I have nieces who are in the lgbtq community. I love and fully support them, wholly and fully. And they both grew up in the church. One is a major pothead; not relative, just throwing it out there lol. I don’t find this offensive. Do you know what I do find offensive? Hate.
Same here. The second commandment is "love thy neighbor as yourself." It's probably my favorite commandment as a Christian and I love anyone despite any differences we share (race, religion, sexuality, gender)
It’s really messed up how other Christians will live their lives ignorant of this i.e. those mentioned in the articles and those sympathetic to those Christians. I used to be Christian, and nothing pissed me off more than seeing people justify bigotry with the Bible—how can you be scholarly enough to say that this controversial interpretation of a verse in Leviticus is God’s word when right in Exodus we find arguably the most important verses to live by in the Old Testament that would contradict hateful behavior?
Like it’s one thing to think it’s a sin, but it’s another to make others’ lives miserable for it. Jesus set the example with being friends with prostitutes, drunkards, and tax collectors (lol). Somehow that wasn’t enough for you? Absolutely despicable.
Anyway, follow Jesus as much as you proclaim you do, and you’re an alright Christian—not according to me, but according to the Gospel.
My Catholic grandmother mistreats me for just wanting to paint my nails. She discriminated against my Trans and Bisexual friends. I read how LGBTQ+ community members are mistreated. So, I lost all respect for evangelical christians. We respect your religion, so you respect our choices.
Anything that causes conservative evangelical Christians to consider that their actions have adverse effects on others is considered offensive by them.
There's nothing more offensive to a christian, than being forced to look at their own hypocrisy
I think what likely offended people was painting over pages of the Bible. To many people that may seem harmless but to them it is their holy book and the living word of God. In the same way any religious group would likely take offense to their holy texts being “defaced” if you will. Now do I think in America where there is a clear separation between church and state that this girls artwork should be banned? Absolutely not. She should be free to express herself through her artwork how she sees fit, but if you’re literally asking how is it offensive to some people, that’s how. At the very least this has given her art more exposure so I’d say banning her definitely backfired. Here’s her artwork for anyone interested https://www.artsonia.com/museum/art.asp?id=123418418&artist=11778020&gallery=y
I tore up a Bible in my art class to use the pages for my art piece. One girl in my class didn't like it but she just kind of said her peace and then moved on. Gotta give her props in hindsight.
Hollywood constantly uses the Bible and displays the church as being led by evil. No one bat's an eye.
An lgbt kid makes art, everyone gets angry.
As long as it was her Bible, who cares? It’s not like she walked into the Vatican and destroyed historical documents
It is offensive that this asshat is not in my district so I can't vote against him.
This is the problem with the 1A debate. It’s always 1A for me and no one else.
Be principled. It’s 1A for everyone.
Here is is: the art
The art is really good, and to me it’s obvious why they got offended. But banning art leads down a dark path to a dystopian nightmare.
Actually really like that.
Can’t be offended when it’s quoting your own damn book
Not to mention, everyone’s got their own interpretation
I mean, Christian values are offensive to lesbians, so end of day someone just has to STFU and be offended!
If traumatising people offends you, maybe stop doing it?
Just proved her point
You can’t do this piece about abusive parents because it’s triggering to terrible parents
You can’t do this jewish piece because it’s offensive to Nazis
People are most sensitive about things they feel are true; but aren't willing to be confronted with.
A lot of good art is offensive. Art is supposed to make you feel something
Art should never be censored, let people feel!
Christians are offended by everything under the sun. What else is new?
art is offensive! wow, I never thought about it... FYI, art is offensive since it was created.
Remind me, who are the “snowflakes” again?
It even fits them better cuz the white hair
They find it incredibly offensive for someone to point out how actively evil they are.
If they don't acknowledge it and keep their head in the sand, then they get to keep being evil without self reflecting and that's much easier for them.
Got banned on Reddit once for being offensive towards Christian's.
Her art was breathtaking in conveying her suffering from religious-abuse and its lifetime trauma!🖤 I'm in therapy now for it now even though I left the faith almost 40 years ago. I love her expression and how poignant it was..... She should be damn proud of her work!
Art should never cater to the offended party.
Lol. A community living in a state of constant offense are offended they could be consisted offensive. Didn’t see that coming….
Ok to be fair we need to ban all Christian art work because it’s offensive to lesbians lol
Always find it funny that they will say there faith is what makes them strong but then they get offended so easily and want the offending thing removed
Just remember all the terrible things going down are Christian objectives not all of them have succeeded thankfully. I can’t sight any more. Tax the churches don’t let the Christians near your kids.
Under god in the POA. why Under God?
“atheistic American is a contradiction in terms,” because if “you deny the Christian ethic, you fall short of the American ideal of life.”
Religious Clergy in schools. why clergy
I believe that sometimes the issue is with the soul and not of the mind, and that’s why I believe that this is a good option for our students in today’s day and age,” state Sen. Danny Burgess
Ten Commandments in schools. Texas
Removing child labor laws Arkansas Conservative Christins
Protecting Pedophiles Globally
Removing Books from libraries Attempting to ban Adult film Making it legal to marry a cousin Making it Legal to marry a child
It’s just gross.
Tbf religion is a load of toxic nonsense
These are the same people who think banning guns won't work.
Since when does any group have a right to not be offended?
They don't like it, don't come to the exhibit.
If it pisses off Christians, go for it.
I can understand how some see it as offensive. But frankly it shouldn't be seen as offensive, it should be seen as how we as Christians have failed the world. We are called to love the world, to lift up the poor and downtrodden. Instead, we have abused our position as the dominant religion in the west to oppress others. I genuinely believe the Jesus' heart is broken by us every day because we go against his most fundamental of teachings.
Seeing her artwork broke my heart. Because I know its not true, that Jesus doesn't want to save all and died to do it. But because of how my fellow Christians act (and how I used to act until my friends showed me just how wrong I was back in college) she feels that God has abandoned her. Because we have abandoned her. I remember I was talking to a friend who was talking about how the government should never have to have social safety nets, because the church should have them instead. That Christianity has utterly failed.
All this to say, this person didn't do anything offensive. They are expressing how abandoned they feel by society, and they are absolutely right
Luckily we have the field of psychology and experts in the field who can help people with religious trauma and that has nothing to do with your view of Christianity.
In other words, you as a Christian can have empathy for these people but you can't offer any professional help with the appeal to your religious teachings, no matter how good or "good" person you are.
That wasn't meant to offend you in any way though and you seem to be a nice person!
Homie, are you aware the vast majority of your fellow Christian’s wouldn’t give a dying trans person water right? When Matthew Shepard was brutally tortured and murdered I watched a church of over 1000 people cheer, celebrate, and pray that the attackers get released from prison. Those are your fellow Christians.
