![Brussels effect: EU bottle caps have arrived in the Dominican Republic](https://preview.redd.it/dneptf8mb77d1.jpeg?auto=webp&s=96daf46d5f4d442ef5fc9e57e5f1eb33e26a36c9)
Next thing is burocracy
wo wo wo wo, slow your horses. For that you have to fill this form, and this other one, send it to window #3, have a receipt, and wait from 1 day to 1 decade.
Ya know this reminds me of that scene where asterix searches for formular a38
It's crazy how that remains relevant considering it was animated nearly 50 years ago.
Bro my dad showed this to me when I was 4 I loved that movie
I tried it on my 2yo but it didn't capture his attention yet. I'll try again though.
I recommend bud spencer one they reach the age of 10
Passierschein A38
Haben Sie das blaue formular?
Nur das Hellblaue, das passt doch, oder?
Nein, natürlich nicht!
Its obviously different in different EU members, but in my experience bureocracy in EU is pretty streamlined, few clicks online and done in most cases.
Agree. Lots of people seem to think.placss like the US are better, but it's a backward paper based mess of nonsensical, expensive beaurocracy. Whilst there are still irritants, I deal with paperwork in the UK, Estonia and Poland and all have more streamlined, electronic, cheap government beaurocracy.
I say it more as a meme tbh
This is why Brexit happened :(
G O O D
So its working
Bastard. At least I have a second citizenship so I want totally robbed by Russian bots
Don't forget filing it in triplicate, handwritten!
The steps after that are not so clear though.
China beat us up there.
ahhaahhahaahahhahaha
The herbivorous superpower strikes again.
And they say Trickle down doesn't work.
Well it doesn’t cause the cap stops it.
Lol
If it can prevent some forms of littering, then I'm all for it
Sure thing I agree.
My issue is that we seem to chose to kill mosquitoes instead of the rampaging elephants. Over the last decade I got the feeling what "we" do is more for show that we're doing something, and many times the easy things, instead of addressing the major issues.
Its better to do the easy things first then hard things than do nothing. I like that the ball is rolling
We have been at the point where we have to do the big and expensive things for quite some time but still don't. Everything helps, sure, but we need action, not just talk.
And most things that is implemented are done so on the effort of us, the consumers and common people while we're just a tiny bit of the spectrum. No country want to regulate their business in fear of hampering the economy compared to other countries, and that's why nothing big happens. You, me and all other average Joes have to pick up the bill as always, but the bill isn't paying rent.
Right? Why do we use plastic at all. We can already replace 90% of single use plastic bottles with glass/cans. Just make it cost 15cents more, i dont care
Bro is driving empty glass bottles around the countryside 💀💀💀
What major issues is it that you think we are missing?
We're releasing more CO2 every day compared to the day before and electrifying transport will not change that. The electric car has been conveyed as a problem solver for this, while in fact the electric cars is not here to save the world, it's here to save the car industry.
The main problem is that no government is willing to sacrifice the economic growth to deal with the issues. Many things could be fixed in a reasonable short amount of time forcing the industry to pay for it themselves, but this would give a disadvantage for the country/EU on the international market.
Everyone know it's fucked up but no one is willing to pick up the bill.
While there's always more to do and I fully agree that infinite growth is impossible, I'd like to push back a bit on that. Europe today generates less CO2e/person than it did in the 2010's with the majority of those gains coming from the electrification of the power we use for heating. Transport is still one of the biggest emitters with 70% being from cars and trucks, so the shift to EV is important.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that industry isn't responsible for climate change or that we're not facing a difficult time. We absolutely are and many companies and politicians need to be held far more accountable, but we should also know that the many, many efforts that people are doing through personal action or through their jobs are helping and pointing us in the right direction.
It's a long, hard slog and far too often it meets resistance from every angle, but eventually we'll get there.
Europe today generates less CO2e/person than it did in the 2010's
One of the reasons for this is because manufacturing is moved outside of Europe many times. If we would account for the CO2 release from the products produced and shipped to us the numbers would look drastically worse.
And Europe isn't the problem to such extent as other continents. Development of Africa and Asia is not hampering the release of CO2 and it's a worldwide affecting problem that doesn't get solved by Europe alone fixing up in Europe. Our import consumption has a large effect not accounted for when we look to Europe and emissions. What we need to fix is that. Less consumption of domestic and imported goods. Won't happen though. Shit has to be made, money have to flow, the economy must come first.
Building more nuclear plant will certainly help a lot for most of the problems...
Co2 and economic growth have recently been decoupled, and peak co2 is likely to be either this year or next. Renewables are growing exponentially.
You're not wrong, but don't underestimate the insane growth of solar.
Mosquitoes are killing far more people than elephants, so it's good we're focusing on them
The mosquitoes doesn't kill, the pathogens they carry do, in the same way a car is not responsible for a fatal accident, the driver is.
I’d argue this shitty design will not help because people still rip it off because it sucks to drink with that bottle cap
What kind of people? I have never thought about ripping it off.
There are also some European hi-tech innovations called glasses that you can consider using.
All kinds of people, probably mostly non-Reddit, I'll give you that. You really never thought about ripping it off? It was the first instinct for me. This system makes it also more difficult to screw the cap back on sometimes, it is very annoying.
It's not that I haven't thought about it. I know I could do it, but why? I know what it is for, so I don't do it. I never had problems in drinking it steaight from the bottle with the cap.atill attached. If you rotate the bottle, there's no risk of it getting in contact with your mouth too.
I find more annoying to live in a very "heavy" water area which leaves a lot of residue, making me buy water in bottles.
The first thing i do is rip it off. I however, very, very rarely use single use plastic bottles, and if i do have one, will use it many times and then rcecycle all the pieces. Why we chose this step instead of actually trying to actively incentivise people.to not use these bottles pisses me the fuck off.
Wow yeah I bring a glass everywhere I go🤯
Have you heard about another hi-tech innovation called a reusable bottle? Some can even keep your drink hot or cold.
Come on.
They're way more annoying on some bottles, I usually rip them off
I rip it off. As it causes various problems.
Me. Every time. I'm environmentalist in a country with well working waste managment and no caps end up in oceans why the fuck do i need to use it if i dispose it in a responsible way and it get deposited in landfill or recycled?
I actually quite like the design. Especially when I'm travelling somewhere. Don't need to hold or put the cap somewhere and it can't get lost.
Exactly. It's all positive, and I find it much more practical if you're the type of person who might misplace a lid.
as someone with adhd i completely agree. having to do a search operation for a bottle cap is a thing of the past
I never realised some people drink directly at the bottle like that lmao. You can have a glass anywhere, an eco cup or a or a flask or something.
The EU did his job, don't blame them for your lazyness. If your are not civilised enough it is on you and not the EU.
do we have data that it at least helps?
Since there was no data available on the new tethered bottle caps, I decided to gather it myself. I attempted to discard 100 caps, and all 100 remained attached to their containers, achieving a 100% success rate. It seems these caps are very effective in staying attached.
It's the new IQ test.
Anyone else remember the og tetrapak? No plastic lids at all and easy to fold open/closed plus you would guaranteed finish it before it went off as the opening would get nasty otherwise
Yea, we have those for some milk cartons still in Finland. But caps makes them easier to transport even if you open it once.
EU be like: regulations moth3rfuck3r!
I'm so sorry mate
I personally don’t see the problem in updating products with good design ideas, independently of the region/country.
The thing is a lot of time, they are made very bad so I end up ripping them off so I can drink normally...
Wait wait...your telling me this is by design? I thought I was buying cheap ass products all this time.
New environmental rule. Apparently people were throwing caps away left and right. Never met anyone who threw their caps away, must be psychopaths.
They are a minor inconvenience, so its not so bad.
It was making me spill content when I tried to detach the cap completely. Ah well at least i know why.
Try putting it down before ripping the cap next time!
I did! But when companies fill their bottles waaay to the top (not complaining tho, more milk for me), you kind of accept the spillage.
Those cups still vary in quality. Some stay open without wobbling or rotating, and then easily close. But some others get in your way of pouring the drink, or hardly fit back in once open, or are so stubborn that they rip half way used for the first time, leaving a sharp bit with which you can cut yourself if you forget about it.
Cutting production costs can leave a big difference.
If you cut the string off completely it's like a normal cap!
Or open it like back in the day, flip the corner and cut it
Oh this was a Brussels masterplan? I was wondering the same thing, while the bottle cap hitting in my eyeball while drinking straight from the container (mum is away 🥳)
Just wait until you accidently pour your drink in that cap, spilling all your liquid and making you frustrated. I'm not convinced this helps anything, for me it only adds frustration.
You saw that the cap was in front of the opening and still poured?
Well, I have been using it for about a couple of months and normally when you hold it on top it stays there but for some reason it came loose while I was pouring and I cursed at the design 🥲
Oh ok, i get that.
If you don't like it, just cut the string away with scissors and it's like the old caps :)
Sure, there's work now, but if you ever visited a dirty beach in e.g. asia, you know where they normally land.
Ok thanks for the info, for me personally it seems like some akward design to fix a problem that is not there (atleast not for me), but yeah theres people who just dont care about anything and throw everything on the ground sadly. Good that theres ideas like this, but as others have said, hopefully we get better thought out measures that will have a significant impact.
100% and the main problem will alway be big corpo.
But i also think if we find a solution to one aspect of pollution, we should take the chance and respect nature :)
I always rip that shit off, so annoying
It would make a mess every time I'd rip it off when the container is full
Cover the top and yank it. Works for me.
Too bad the implementation is otfen bad at worst and annoying at best. I always just rip them off. Im also not a fucking slob and always pick up my trash after me.
Imo this directive may have been pushed too hastily. I'd have preferred a flat fee on plastic bottles, returned when bottle+cap is returned. Caps are (relatively) good plastic and worth recycling as well so it would make sense.
If the problem is littering, educate your kids to stop doing it (on a national level) and crack skulls of those who do.
educate your kids to stop doing it (on a national level) and crack skulls of those who do.
lmao that never works.
So they can hate EU too? GJ
I for one hate these things and im from the EU... makes drinking from bottles very annoying. Who the fuck even handed in used bottles without the cap on them anyway?
I hate that shit.
I hate these caps. It’s so inconvenient and frustrating… and plus it doesn’t even save plastic
I assume it's to prevent bottle caps littering the oceans but yes it's pretty infuriating especially on milk bottles
bro are you a toddler. just twist it back on, it isn't hard lmao.
Some just pop back spilling product. It's true that some are very inconvenient, but I guess they are improving
just don't behave like a toddler, its such a crazy minor adaptation. and if you can't do that, just hold the thing back while pouring. problem fucking solved.
It doesn’t help when you can’t put the cap on correctly each time.
you can, its easy.
You're the toddler, just don't litter and then you won't waste your governments time and money making jank ass regulations like this. This is peak meaningless bandaid solution to greater problem.
Lol and you partly ripped it because it's easier to put it on right?
I always break these they are so fucking annoying.
I absolutely hate those caps. Every time I try to pour something, it always gets in the way.
I dont really understand whats so hard about removing the cap and placing it on the counter.
it's so you don't litter the cap outdoors. can't say i had seen many loose bottle caps in the litter before though. they spent 25 years and millions of taxpayer money to inconvenience people
I'm on the opposite spectrum of this issue. I love these caps, it's a small quality of life improvement for me.
There is nothing hard about placing it on the counter, but there's nothing hard about using/removing new cap either.
I dont really understand whats so hard about removing the cap and placing it on the counter.
Are you too weak to pull it off? lmao
Let's just hope their descendents will one day forgive us.
Sincere apologies!
I hate those little useless shits that I have to break away anyway
You may thank the idiots who toss plastic waste into nature.
Thats sad that EU doing such things and making life harder when EU is responsible for 0,6% of waste in oceans. I mean I was listening to this project reasoning and it was pointed to the oceans, and plastic that is usually throwed away. Sry, but EU is mostly clean compared to Asia/Africa/Southern America.
https://ourworldindata.org/ocean-plastics
With this law instead of 0.6% we will put it dawn to 0.59% ...
And this is what is important for UE politician in current crysis....
to be fair, the EU can take care of this kind of stuff while also working on more impactful measures
Making life harder ? Really ?
making life harder
LMFAO ????????
This is what's making your life hard!? Bro, you don't have enough problems, then.
Right? Just tear it off, I don't understand what's the problem.
Tearing it off isn't necessarily easy for children, some women, elderly people, people with disabilities. It's also not safe because it leaves the cap and the ring with sharp edges.
Leaving it unattached may not be optimal for people with other types of disabilities, as they could easily lose the cap. People with blindness, dementia, or simply forgetfulness, like myself, can easily misplace it.
Nevertheless, most people who complain are not disabled, they are just mildly annoyed
Tbh I wouldn't give a single F if they made it possible to remove the caps 1) easily, so that even a 5yo girl could do it and 2) safely, so that I don't get cuts when removing them.
How old ones looked?
Less plastic waste in the Caribbean sea, that sounds pretty dope if you ask me ...
Splendid 👏👏👏👍👍👍👍
Can't agree on that.
Go on whatever beach you want and try to find a 50m stretch where no such cap is laying around.
It's not like the idea for that suddenly popped up in the heads in Brussels.
And if the Brussels effect helps to also reduce littering in other countries I'm glad about that.
This is all going according to plan. Europe’s world conquest phase one is in full effect.
