I’m looking for suggestions on the best affordable headphones for producing bass music. I’m hoping to get some open back headphones that represent the lows well for $500 or under. Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated 😊
Monitors won't do anything though, unless the room is treated. If you've got a lot of bare walls you're going to have sound bouncing everywhere and it won't give you an accurate read on anything more than a pair of headphones would.
Dt990 pro or dt770 pro
go for any headphones and use sonarworks to make your headphones flat response, then they’ll be neutral and translate v nicely to all systems
I’ll have to look into sonarworks but I’ve been using Equalizer APO along with Peace GUI for a year and it works really well for a free, open source EQ solution.
Thanks for the rec!
Beyerdynamics , senheiser
Agreed, 650’s or dt990’s 👍
Theres two things headpones always lie about.. Bass and reverb..wouldnt even suggest doing snything on the headpones..
I really like my sundaras, they’re within your price range and sound very close to the LCD-X. You could also try dt990s or dt1990s. If you’re in a city, I’d suggest going to an audiophile store and trying out the options yourself :)
Ollo s4x
I just went from the Sennheiser 598hd to beyerdynamic dt990 pro. I like them a lot better sound wise for mixing. They are not as comfy however but not bad at all. I will say though, they have a harsher high end so you have to be aware of that while mixing. I have turned down my hats a few times and it was actually too wuiet when listening ba k on other speakers
I just got the dt990 pro's too and think they're great. If I had OPs budget I'd get the dt 1990 pro's.
Sony mdr 7506
VSX. The room emulations are probably the best way to represent bass frequencies on headphones, specifically the club ones
Can confirm. Recently got VSX and they are incredible. If you buy before end of the month it includes two of the premium rooms.
Hopefully it will be my next big purchase! :)
I make bass and have some sennheiser HD650's, which are $499. I'm very happy with them.
If OP is in the US, best to get the HD 6XX from drop.com. Same headphone but usually around $200.
They were under $300 last I checked, just bought a pair myself
Fantastic cans, but be sure to pair them with a decent headphone amp.

Headphones are pretty shit for mixing unless you use extra software to correct the issues. Also, more expensive better headphones aren't going to translate to a better mix out of the box. I would just buy monitors. If you want a headphone suggestion though, for bass music I think my mixing translated best while using M50Xs, so I would suggest those.
If you're planning to buy software like sonarworks you can probably pick whatever headphones you want. In that case open back sennheisers or similar options will give you better sound quality.
