Facebook groups designed for people to sell discs amongst each other are riddled with people buying special runs and stamps of Innova discs from a website called DiscGolfValues .com and re-selling them for much more than the original price. Mentioning the website in the comments on these posts is grounds for removal from the groups, and many do not allow posts at all unless you are searching for a disc or selling a disc. There is seemingly no mechanism to inform people that they are constantly being taken advantage of. It's extremely annoying that these discs are released in relatively small amounts and most get immediately scooped up by a select few repeat offenders who take to facebook and try to profit from it. This also is common with Innova tour series discs and some Discmania releases used to be like this as well.

If you were president of the disc golf community and were tasked with fixing this issue, what would you do? Is it even an issue in your eyes?

At that point it was for all the mcbeth discs, all tour series, certain mvp molds like Craves, like all discs were constantly sold out. It was a wild time lol

This is just how the second-hand market works.

Scalpers buy blocks of tickets and resell them at an inflated price because they know people will pay. In these FB groups, people are happy to pay the above retail price for these 'special' discs for various reasons.

The only way to combat it is not to buy the discs at an inflated price. If people stop buying, the resellers will have inventory they can't move and will drop the price and some of them will move to other markets to exploit. But as long as people are buying there is nothing you can do about it.

OTB discs (and every other Innova dealer for that matter) does the same thing with Innova Tour Series Discs. They buy them off the pro shop at retail just like you or I do, and then sell them at a premium. They’re also buying USDGC Rocs for $25 and selling them for $45. Do you have a problem with that?

It’s not an issue in my eyes. Some people like to see the disc they’re getting before they buy, some people have money to blow and don’t care about the price. If you dont like the price move on.

The groups would have to make rules about selling just released discs for above the drop price. And the retailers need to monitor order activity and place limits on how many of a limited run one customer can buy. Then they’d also have to make sure they are able to recognize bot accounts meant to circumvent the rules. It’s very tough. I know a few concert poster artists that are constantly dealing with this kind of issue.

Discgolfvalues has been doing that for a decade or more. Sunking (I believe) now owns prime discs on eBay, which is a similar setup but with older stuff. There’s a few retailers that also sell collectibles… it’s a difficult line to toe because the people who own shops love plastic circles too.

They're trading plastic circles, not food/medicine/generators after a hurricane. On a scale of 1-10 in terms of importance, this is a zero.

They are trading on the stamp, or the color. This is like the Pog market back in the 90's.

It's too bad, because I would like to buy some of these discs. Like the Nye discs that were just released- I would buy them for sure, but I can't.

But that doesn't affect my ability to play the game, I can still get those exact same discs. I can still get lots of other cool discs too. I've gotten some wild stuff lately that looks unique and exciting.

I guess this is really like the 'skins' market in a game like Fortnite. Or horse armor.

It's just what happens when there is a collectors market. It's not like they're buying all the stock runs too, so it doesn't really effect access to discs in general.

I generally agree, but one angle I dont really get is 'inform those being taken advantage of'. Someone going after special discs on an aftermarket site is not expecting to pay msrp lol

I just assume most of the buyers and bidders have no idea where the seller got the disc. If they knew where they came from and that there will likely be a restock they would he much less likely to pay $40 for a $18 disc
