Throwing trash out of your car

Why do so many people in des moines do this? I see it everyday. I was in a drive thru this morning and the guy in front of me just throws his straw wrapper out the window - McDonald’s has several trash cans in their parking lot.

is it funny to you? are you lazy? is it generational stupidity; did your parents teach you that it was okay? i dont understand.

Cigarette smokers are the worst offenders - your car already stinks, why do you feel the need to throw your (burning) cigarette out onto the ground? get a car ashtray ffs

MLK & Cottage Grove in 1990 - What Used to be Here?

I would describe myself as an armchair urbanist, and I love going through Google Earth historic satellite images to see how communities changed over time. The area where MLK Parkway meets Cottage Grove and the I-235 in 1990 is really interesting - does anyone know what sort of businesses used to be here, or the history of the community? By 2000, it looks largely cleared out with the expansion of MLK (with the exception of Smokey Row).

Distracted Driver

To the broccoli haired boy driving the silver Dodge Dart through downtown Des Moines:

i saw you run through a red light and swerve through lanes without noticing my motorcycle next to you.

please do better and be better.

DSM Airport

Just watched a string of military type planes come from the airport, bank to the west, then disappear. They were bunched together closer than I've seen. Maybe 10 planes. Anybody know? Not on flight app.

This is the most beautiful day in DSM at this time of year that I can remember.

How'd you spend this day of absolutely perfect weather? My wife and I checked out the new additions to Easter Lake, which look great. Check it out if you haven't been there lately.

Flooding

Re: flood watch notice. I’ve lived in IA for a while, but this is my first year not on high ground AND in a ground level apartment.

When we got excessive rain in May the rain got pretty high up on the sidewalk outside, so I kind of wonder if I’m a flood risk. Does anyone have regular prep for potential flooding? Especially for renters - do apartments ever provide sandbags or anything like that?

Texas Expat looking for fun things to do in DMA

Hey yall I just moved here from Texas and I'm interested in experiencing the best entertainment food and nature spots. Can any locals point me in the right direction please? Many thanks stay cool 😎

Science Center Preschool

I am considering enrolling my son in the Science Center’s Preschool this fall. I would love to hear from anyone who has experience with it.

What was your overall experience? Was the curriculum well rounded? How were the facilitators? How was your kids’ social development?

Any insights or tips would be greatly appreciated. TIA

School Question

Have friend considering a move to the DSM area from DFW. Can anyone tell me if there are schools that offer dual language programs in elementary and middle school? I.e. programs for English speakers to learn Spanish while Spanish speakers are mixed in with the English speakers.

Adventureland

Anyone know if you can bring snacks into the park? Particularly the water park?

Ice cream truck rental?

Can anyone recommend an ice cream truck rental in town? I know like Outside Scoop and Totally Rolled do it but I'm looking for something a little more basic.

Wanting to do just a small little neighborhood thing for my son's birthday - have the ice cream truck come for maybe an hour at most, let the kids get what they want, and I'll pay the bill at the end.

If anyone knows of such a thing please comment!

Can someone give me a shot please?

My doctor doesn't trust me to do it myself. I need someone who regularly gives shots in the butt to give me a shot in the butt. I have the shot, I just need a human. Thanks.

Edit: I'm going to a walk in clinic, but I'm leaving the post up for butt jokes.

Whose brilliant idea was it to have Summerfest in Ankeny held at the District?

It sucked the last few years and the parking is atrocious. It doesn’t help the local restaurants it just makes everyone stay away. It’s too small of a space to fit that much lame but hey if you want to spend 9$ for a Busch Light tall boy, I get it.

Accident near MLK bridge

Not sure what peeps have been getting up to in the middle of the night on a weekend, but it seems to have come to an abrupt halt for at least one person, whose SUV is flipped onto its roof in the far right lane of the westbound half of MLK East, apparently in a collision violent enough to throw a big chunk of a stylin custom mag wheel all the way over to the opposite side of the street, where it was laying in wait to nearly take me out.

Hope everybody’s okay; wear those seatbelts!

New Iowa Hemp Law Starts Tomorrow

And I’m really confused because there hasn’t been any sort of announcement by Climbing Kites or any Iowa THC beverage company about it. Hoping u/LuaBear could answer on here if we will still be able to buy the Orange Mango Climbing Kite in stores (since it’s under 4mg of THC).

Also when I went to Fareway on Friday they were absolutely stocked with Climbing Kites with no indication they would be gone come Monday. I know this really doesn’t mean anything, just an observation.

KXNO

Has there been any announcement about what will replace the Murph and Andy timeslot? Unfortunately I'm thinking it won't be local and soon none of it will be local.

Local craft fairs?

I'm an artist that has recently moved to the area. I work with mostly paper mache and paper clay and I make weird anthropomorphic foods and pumpkins mostly. My stuff isn't for everyone, so I'm wondering if there are any suggestions of great fairs or festivals to sell at? I thought about maybe the Madison County Covered Bridge Festival but I'm not sure that would be my crowd. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Misskitty’s review? Every time I have been there there’s very few people with usually the same song playing. Am I going there at the wrong time??

I like the bar, it’s big and spacious, and cleaner than most, but I don’t understand why there’s very few people there. Also, do you always have to pay 5$ to get in?

Does anyone know where to get really good broasted chicken?

My grandparents live in Corning, we were visiting this weekend and had the broasted chicken breast (they also do broasted wings) from Three C’s and it was amazing. I can’t find anything in Ankeny. Would love to know of any places that do broasted chicken in the DSM metro area.
