"I remember when you sold Star Maps on Hollywood Boulevard. AND AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED, YOU SHOULD STILL BE THERE!"
He's just breaking bawls
I love Sol. He and Al switch as my number one almost weekly cause he is just so God damn unshakably good hearted and savvy as fuck.
And yet whenever I see John Hawkes the first character I think of isn’t Sol, but Pete Bottoms, the gas station employee at the beginning of From Dusk Til Dawn.
For me it's Rush Hour, no matter how many times I rewatch Deadwood, he'll always be "that dude selling star maps"
Guess I need to rewatch From Dusk Till Dawn because I don’t remember him at all!
He’s the best. Terrific in everything. He was so, so good in The Perfect Storm.
"I wish it was nighttime so I could say 'Goodnight Irene'".
He captures that awkward sweetness really well.
Great as Kenny's brother on Eastbound and Down too!
Man I don’t remember him in that at all! I just watched Deadwood for the first time over the holidays and it’s the first real character I’ve connected with this actor on so I’m seeing these comments about his other work and I want to go back and rewatch everything!
You're going to want to re-watch after realizing it stands alone.
Also was the rapist cult leader in Martha Marcy May Marlene 😖
I may have to look into that😒 How about his role as the gas station clerk opposite George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino in Dusk till Dawn?
He is amazing as Tear Drop in Winter’s Bone. Intense and scary character.
Whoa that was him? I watched that when it first came out and I knew Lawrence was going places.
But Tear Drop right was the character, one guy said, "Tear Drop will be here soon." and the other guy was like "Fuck that, I'm out."
Holy shit. Never made this connection. Loved that character but that was ages before I watched DW.
He still owes Al seven dollars.
You can't ass f**k a tree.
I don’t see Saul as the ass fucking type
"A jew on a wagon!"
Sol Star is one of the best most kind hearted characters on the show. He does a great job of brushing off the stigmas of the time.
"I've been called worse by better."
He's also so in tune with his fellow man, noticing the Rev is sick before we do. His patience and understanding is always paramount especially compared to his partner.
I find that I've not seen John Hawkes in as many things as I'd like which is a theme for most actors in Deadwood.
"A jew on a wagon!"
Is it just me or is that the first laugh line on the show? For some reason that part gets me every time.
Yeah proper gets me and then I think Bullock says to Byron blocking the way to the gallows:
"That's a deal you loud mouth cocksucker" which is also gold and was something I'd never heard in a western before.
Yeah it’s the first time they say cocksucker.
He got his load on.
cocksucker
YEAH! THAT'S RIGHT! I LIKE SAYING COCKSUCKER! SO WADDYA THINK ABOUT THAT??
Seems like kind of is from what I’ve seen of the show so far lol
Just finished the episode and couldn’t stop thinking about Sol every time he was on the screen. I get the feeling he isn’t going to be so pure of heart in THIS show sadly.
And wow, True Detective took a hard turn into the supernatural with this episode, I’m curious if that is actually going to be the case as the season progresses. Overall I’m into it though, I’ve been desperate for a good new show to throw myself into!
"I remember when you failed at stealing diamonds and died after falling off a building onto the top of a cop car. AND AS FAR AS IM CONCERNED, YOU SHOULD STILL BE THERE!"
That cocksucker is up to no good!
that was a weird fucking show, or episode, or whatever that was. Some of the best acting I've seen from Jodie Foster, and Kali Reis as Navarro, I've never seen her before and I already like her. Then there's that bizarre soundtrack, which I do not like, in and of itself. Then there's the supernatural straight up existing out there, which I am not sure about.
Overall I don't know what to think!
Agreed. I’ll give it a few more episodes. IMO aside from season 1 the show has been a bit lackluster.
I watched that first episode last night. Seeing John Hawkes just made me think about shutting that silly supernatural shit off and watching Deadwood instead.
I watched episode 1 of both yesterday. 🥹 It was a good day.
Is he wearing makeup or something, he looks wierd.
He’s 20 years older.
Did he also face swap with mathew modine
I think it’s the lack of facial hair. Just about everything I’ve seen him in he’s got something.
He very happy saying you reduce costs buying in volume.
I just learned right now that he is Sixty freaking Four 😵💫
I really hope it's a red herring but I got vibes they were setting him up as a suspect to the old cold case
My father's last words on his death bed in Vienna- "True Detective"
You put something on the Deadwood sub with no meaningful relationship to the show.
