Decaying Duplication
Alternative card name: Diminishing Returns.
That's already a card
Crap
That's not a card, you can use that name

So, for GUB, it just creates a copy with a -1/-1 counter on it?
Weirdly, that's a bit below rate considering blue can just have 'make a slightly limited copy' like [[glasspool mimic]] or plotted [[visage bandit]].
My gut says that's fair given the flexibility. Even if the copies die on entry they still give you ETB triggers and the like
I felt it was fair. It copies any creature (not just ones you control) for three mana and scales up at a rate of two mana per additional copy. Though some (or all) of those copies may die upon entering, you would still get their enters and dies triggers. I would also argue that, looking at other spells that create token copies and considering their restrictions and vulnerabilities, 3MV for one copy is on rate, not below rate.
Especially being gub, [[phyrexian metamorph]] costs generic
It could be stronger without much of an issue. [[Dopplegang]] scales exponentially harder and has more targets. It could be XGUB or let it double as removal by having the -1/-1 counters put on each other creature that shares a name with the token.

Both of those are you control only, and this is any creature.
Yes, hence referring to them as 'slightly limited copy.'
The difference between yours and anyone's is enormous when it comes to playing clones.

Any specific inspiration for the flavour text? It's intriguing. I get some Remnant from the Ashes vibes from it, but it feels a bit off at the same time
Thank you! No specific inspiration - just something I felt fit the mechanics of the card!
I like it, but made me think of a version that has a cheaper rate, maybe just 1 X, but puts a -1 counter on EACH creature with the same name. Use it on opponents creatures, could even use it to wipe a token deck, or as just a good rate duplicator with downside and flexibility
Certainly a cool direction to take this design space!
Put a -1/-1 counter on target creature and each other creature with the same name as that creature, then create a token that's a copy of that creature. Then repeat this process X more times.
I could also imagine using this mechanic on its own as a board-wipe design:
Put a -1/-1 counter on each creature for each other creature that has the same name as it.
(Tagging u/emmass01 and u/DanCassell, as they made similar suggestions!)
Creatures that make it so other creatures enter with +1/+1 counters would completely undo the downside, though I don't have time to look up examples atm. Not the best use for it, I'm sure, but that's what came to mind.
Fun, interesting design. I like it!
Certainly a creative interaction, and targeting [[Master Biomancer]] would even create exponentially stronger copies of it!

An IED made out of a bunch of Blood Artists
Excellent design! I could totally see this as a mythic for a set that cares about -1/-1 counters. Perhaps a plane where Phyrexian oil still exists? 🤔
The corrupting, replicating nature of the flavor definitely feels Phyrexian
What if you create a token copy of your target, then put a -1/-1 counter on each other creature that shares a name with it? That way if you cast this for a large number on an opponent's creature you can kill it.
if this was golgari i'd run it in my [[meren of clan nel toth]] deck along with a bunch of creatures with ETB triggers like [[healer of the glade]] or [[arborback stomper]], but especially creatures with low power/toughness

Grineer crossover?
My initial curiosity is how this would work with [[craterhoof behemoth]] . Feels like exponential growth, but I may be forgetting a timing/wording rule
It would definitely be exponential growth but capped as the +x/+x abilities would stack up and only begin to resolve after state-based actions cause any copies with 0 or less toughness to die.
(Alternate card name: Rot of Replication)
Edit: It appears my comment duplicated itself a couple of times; very flavorful, but unintentional!
