I started learning web development recently, however a few people I know said I'm just wasting time because of how saturated the field has become, and that I should be learning something else such as mobile development. While personally I would still like to keep learning web development and be as good in it as possible, as it's your own skills that help you get hired regardless of other factors. But at the same time, this has made me doubt the path and I keep thinking if I should scratch it and actually go towards mobile app development or something else instead. So, I would like to hear what others in the field think about this? What would be a better career option these days?
Is it better to learn mobile app development instead of web development?
At the end of the day, it's really all the same stuff. Learn whatever you want to work in or will be paid for.
Most mobile work is offshored to Czech Republic, India, Vietnam, etc. it’s just the front end of crud apps and not super hard to do. Web always has more jobs no matter what.
Mobile dev also has tons of people in it and even less jobs.
There's no secret field of software engineering that's different than all the others and is actually doing great right now. They're all experiencing issues with poor labor markets atm due to the flood of devs re-entering via layoffs, plus all-time-high CS graduations, plus the trend of so many people trying to get into tech and get rich quick via self-learning, plus offshoring, plus high interest rates, plus probably a bunch of other reasons I didn't list.
If you like web dev, then stick with web dev. There are jobs out there. It isn't impossible.

It is easy to switch, and flutter or react native (web technologies basics) are popular for mobile dev
