Parking fine twice higher on my rented tourist car than the local cars.Tourism/Περιηγητισμός

Hi there. I've just went back to my rented car and saw a pink fine paper on the car glass. Until then, no problem, it was my responsibility to park well, I played, I lost. But then I checked the two other cars parked at the same place and having a fine as well, and I found out theirs was 40€, mine is 80€. The other cars were local ones, and mine was obviously a tourist one since it was rented. I had a chat with a local woman in one of the two other cars and she was very surprised by the amount of my fine since hers was half of it. Is this regular stuff that as a tourist, your fine is twice higher than local ones parked at the exact same place ?

What is the deal with KissamosCulture/Πολιτισμός

We have been travelling round Crete for the past fortnight and have come for a one night stay in Kissamos to visit Balos. It is completely deserted but has loads of accommodation. Was it ever busy here or does it get busier at different points in the year? It’s a bit creepy walking round!

Young family moving to Heraklion area - which area? Which nursery/school?Society/Κοινωνία

Two questions:

  1. Which are the posh areas in and around heraklion? Can be a village or a town or a neighbourhood in Heraklion. Safety is critical and posher areas are safe. But also for the community, more likely to speak English or have an expat or two to be friends with.

  2. What schools are out there? English speaking, international

Thank you?

Does anyone in Chania right now in the harbour area know why cars have been driving around honking for an hour and there’s countless bangs going on? Sounds like maybe fireworks?

Strange insect biteHealth/Υγεία

Hello! I'm visiting this wonderful island for a week. Yesterday I was at Sarakinas Gorge and at one point while I was descending via rope I evidently grabbed an insect that was on the rope itself. The pain was shocking and immediate and I shook the thing off my hand and swiftly found what appeared to be a small black stinger embedded in my finger. I could not find the insect afterwards and it did not seem to be a flying type.

Overnight it has become more severe and swollen. Wondering if any locals have any suggestions for products for pain/swelling reduction and/or advice as to what may have bit me. Thanks very much.

UPDATE: I went to Asklepeion Crete in Heraklion. I was treated immediately and for a very affordable price. The doctor diagnosed me with an infection and prescribed me medicine. He also took me personally to the pharmacy and explained the dosing regimen in detail.

As usual I am both surprised and impressed by the general kindness and positive disposition of the people I have met on this land. Coming from the United States I have a much more acute sense of US culture as self centered, aggressively capitalistic, and transactional in nature. Here it feels like a much more ancient and traditional sense of community exists in spite of the eroding influences of modernity.

Hi guys!

I'm in Chania for the next few months for work and uni. Everything is online, so in order to get out of the house I'm trying to find some good spots in Chania to grab a coffee or small bite and do my work. Any recommendations where it would not be rude to stay 2+ hours?
