Why it will take more than money to make Australian women consider having children 'for the country'
ARTICLEGiving women money so that they will have children is counter-productive. Educated women do not want to spend years of their lives sitting at home and looking after their kids and losing their professional skills and connections.
Provide free childcare, provide good preschool and school-level education. Make sure that parents can work part-time if they want to.
Why should a woman have children if that means not being able to work in her chosen profession anymore and having a lower salary and lower pension?
No amount of money the govt can give would come close to making up for the average amount women lose by having kids, just from the negative hit to their careers and financial independence.
Solid point, I think one of the biggest things the government could do to encourage people to have kids is implement universal basic income because that would mean everyone had financial independence no matter how many hours they worked (or didn't work).
Even if I wanted kids, I really don't think I could cope with being completely financially dependent on my partner for years. And years is a best case scenario, some women's careers never recover after they leave work to have kids.
