![How do I discourage laying in the sink?](https://preview.redd.it/ffijqhsr3seb1.jpg?auto=webp&s=f7f0740450edef93a0ed474742eb1945c8e85988)
I just found my cat like this for the first time and I’m concerned with her picking up oxyclean (which I use to clean my sink) picking up on her fur. Is there anything I can do to get her to stop? This is my first time seeing this behavior
I just found my cat like this for the first time and I’m concerned with her picking up oxyclean (which I use to clean my sink) picking up on her fur. Is there anything I can do to get her to stop? This is my first time seeing this behavior
Mine too
Here another orange white boy. Though he prefers his spot by the window.
Likewise, my old man loves it, and loves fighting and drinking the water when I turn it on low for him. He even asks me to turn the water on for him sometimes lol
Yeah good luck! Just make sure you rinse your sink out I guess
Yep and be warned if you start turning the water on for them to drink you will never be allowed to stop. My last cat had me trained my current two cats I’ve never once done it for them and they don’t ask lol
Yeah I don’t know how it started but he’s already got me trained to turn the water on for him 🤡 ❤️
It’s sweet and it’s not really that hard to do I just remember wanting to walk away sometimes and having to wait. I change their water bowl twice a day so it’s not like they dont have access it’s just more ‘fun’ from the faucet
Mines a little different, she likes the bathtub lol
He fits so perfectly!!! A work of art 🤌
I wanna see your baby’s face please 🙏🏻
This is probably the best head on shot I've got of him right now!
Awww, he’s a little different in color, and his face has white. He’s a handsome man😻
This is my beautiful boy Nugget😻The love of my life❤️
Aww what a cutie! Nugget kind of looks like a mix between Pistol (my old man, named by my late grandma) and my daddy's boy Felis, he's a chonker! Here's Felis 😸
Your cat might enjoy a pet water fountain. I’ve read that stagnate water is considered less desirable by cats, because in the wild it could be contaminated.
This is the truth
That's not even a bowl sink. Weirdo kitty.
"This is what cats do. I googled it. This is normal."
Awe your goblin looks like mine
This young man loves HIS sink.
What a dapper little man you have!
It’s a fancier version of “If I fits, I sits”
My orange one keeps crapping fat turds in the sink. It’s annoying, but it’s really hot where the litter pans are at the moment so I don’t blame him. We can’t move the pans anywhere else sadly, so I just let him do it and clean it up after. It’s the cats house and we’re living in it!
At least it’s a very easy spot to clean
This is the truth!
It's the cat's house, and we are born to serve
Mine used to wee in the sink, didn’t imagine it could be worse! Line the sink with plastic wrap & a sprinkle of litter for easier cleaning?
We use the sink often, but it cleans out pretty well thankfully so it’s okay. He doesn’t do it that often anyways.
Could you put up shade covers high above to tone down the days of the sun?
Cool and flea free porcelain.
As DomesticusRex has said, your cat likes to lie in there because is cooler, maybe if you buy him a cooling mat, he will prefer it over the sink
If bed shaped why not bed?
Omg this made me laugh 😂 thank you 😊
Good luck
You win cutest sink kitty so far lol. Give your baby extra pets for me!
Thankyou! Will do, he loves the sink!
I’ll add the faucet is gently dripping and she is wet… meaning it’s dripped on her. She doesn’t care
The way she is looking at you 😭😭😭 not a single care for your worries 🤣🤣🤣
Someone had put a sheet of foil over theirs.
Mine took the foil off and made a loose ball with it…sigh it’s not foolproof sadly
Most cats love water dripping from the sink. I bought 2 water fountains off Temu that are shaped like my sink faucet, now my cat thinks my sink is in the floor 😂
Mine love drinking from a dripping faucet. One will jump on the bathroom sink while I am taking a tub and demand I turn the sink on for him, even though I bring him a glass of water up too. I gave up on the sink and I'm losing the coffee table battle too.
My siblings tried for three months to get the cat to stop jumping on the dining table. The cat just found stacks of books to sit next to, to avoid the squirt bottle.
Good for her
The sink belongs to her now. Maybe you can brush your teeth in the shower?
They like that :D
The sink is cooler than the surroundings so the cat is attracted to it. Maybe do an extra rinse. I’ve known many cats who love laying in the sink and I have never heard of one getting sick from the habit.
Or just use something mild like vinegar to clean the sink. I’ve just learned it’s easier to scrub a little longer with something mild than to try and train the cats out of it.
It’s really hot where I live at the moment and the AC broke down so my cat got in the sink to cool down
I just saw a post on the r/humans page of a cat complaining about her human trying to keep her from relaxing in this perfectly round and cool spot for me to nap in. Silly humans should know by now us felines will lay out where ever we want.
The subreddit you linked is about a TV programme. Is there a specific sub for cats complaining about their owners lol?
I just made that name up, I didn't know there really was a subreddit named that!
Omg this should be a thing! So clever
Good luck with that!
Aww she looks so delicate 😍
Awh he looks like a cartoon burglar
Decoy sink above it
Big brain time
They’ll always go for the high ground…you will get slapped in the face a lot in a very condescending manner while brushing your teeth and such, but it solves your particular issue
"it's over OP, I have the high ground"
"you underestimate my fluffiness"
I get being concerned about the cleaning products. Vinegar seems to work well to clean up pretty much everything. I also have a cat that loves the sink. She looks so cute in it too! Sometimes you just leave the mess and let the cat be happy.
Turn the water on 😂
My cats love it when the water is on too 😭
Don’t
Don’t discourage? Will the cleaning supplies not bother her? I usually just wipe out the sink then it gets washed down from when I use the faucet
She’s happy and she’s the boss, do as your told
I would never question her being the boss but are the cleaning chemicals okay? Should I just make it more of an effort to make sure every inch is clear?
Stop using chemicals in the sink 🤷♂️ pet friendly antibacterial products suffice
Ugh. Any recommendations for bathroom products that are pet friendly and break down soap scum?
OMG I have been waiting for a chance to do this.... Buy one of these and fill it with Dawn; not off brand, actual Dawn. You can get them at walmart, dollarama, the Dollar Tree, Dollar General..... It cleaned the soap scum in my tub 1000000 times better than scrubbing bubbles! And Dawn and animal safe!
Adult moment over, now back to not being excited about cleaning products....
This is actually a great tip. Thanks!
I use Clorox mold & mildew spray on literally everything in my bathroom, my cat has been laying in my sink and tub since he was born ( he’s 2.5 ), and it’s never bothered him. I rinse everything really well bc I don’t like the smell, but I think the lingering smell is what attracts him to it?? Idk, but I know he’s healthy as a horse 😂
I had a cat that apparently fucking loved bleach … I had this janky narrow bathroom in my last living space I’d get on hands and knees vs mop with bleach and every single time my giant male tabby find his way in there minutes later tryna roll on floor and sniffing around with glee ( obviously I wouldn’t let him in befkre it’s all dried up ) I’m certain he’d smell it and be like YAYYYY .. naturally I’d shoo him outta there
Years before him , I was a tween kid , I had a calico she’d come running if she heard you snap open the Bengay( a icy hot menthol muscle rub for those who never heard of this American product) lid and act like some glue huffer laying beside my dad after he’d rub it on his knees - and we were like wtfff watching her smell it and start drooling and having a catnip high like reaction .
Omg that’s hilarious! Cats are such absolute freaks! I have 3 sisters and they go wild for bin bags, like hungry sharks attacking a delicious corpse. They all simultaneously appear when they hear me emptying the bin. They also love trying to eat bubble bath bubbles. Delicious forbidden foam. Total weirdos.
My two girls do the bag thing as well! I thought they were the only ones! They’re sisters too! 🤣🤣🤣
That’s exactly what my boy does 😂 He flops back and forth and rubs his face all in the sink, then just lays there stuck like he’s high until he falls asleep 🤣
HHah exactly I’m like get outta there you weirdo this isn’t good for you!!!
I absolutely LOVE, no, honestly - I CRAVE the smell of BenGay ointment!! Goes back to wrapping my sweet Grandmother’s arthritic knees when I was young - she was a beautiful “larger-size” woman and bending over wasn’t happening for her, so I would rub-in that wonderful wintergreen-smelling ointment (back THEN, BenGay came in metal tubes, and was MUCH strong smelling compared to now!?) BenGay rubbed in, I’d wrap each of her sore-knees using her stretched-out ace bandages that were used & reused no telling HOW MANY NIGHTS. It never failed that Grandmother would tell me to “go wash my hands with hot water and use soap, so I wouldn’t rub my eyes in my sleep by accident”. For years now, before bed, I have been spreading BenGay in old hand towel, folding it & wrapping it tightly with a hair elastic - It goes to bed with me and I smell it all night, cannot sleep without it FR.
My tabby loves Volteran gel!! She will wake up and jump up when I’m rubbing it into my hands, then follow me around trying to lick my fingers. I asked my dr if that was okay and he said not to let her eat it, but cats are attracted to the smell.
As for the sink, I wipe mine down with Clorox spray, and then rinse it down. I gave up 20 yrs ago trying to keep them out. I remember one time my SO went in the bathroom and suddenly started yelling for me. He hadn’t noticed my void in the sink until she meowed at him. I had to go get the cat so he could pee without worrying about being attacked!
Was about to say I use clorox wipes to clean the sink and counters and none of my cats have had any problems with it!
I use vinegar.
We like a mixture of vinegar, dawn dish detergent and water. It cleans basically anything! You can even do vinegar and water.
Bleach is not very dangerous (there's a small amount put deliberately in our tapwater). Also, rinse thoroughly with whatever cleaning product you're using and there will not really be anything left.
I agree! Buy a gallon of white vinegar. That, dish soap and water are the very best (and nontoxic) cleansers you can get. Cheaper and safer all around!! Fill a spray bottle 1/3 white vinegar, a few drops of dish soap and the rest with water. Works like magic on everything and super safe!
Household strength vinegar (in some grocery stores in cleaning aisle/stronger than food grade but if you can’t find it food grade will do). 50% vinegar to 50% water( degreases & kills germs) if you need something for soap scum etc use baking soda paste…rinse with vinegar & water when done scrubbing…completely non-toxic…. I have cat and the 11 week premature baby is now 16 yrs…we didn’t know if my son had an immune system and chemical cleaners were not useable. On a good not it cleans the pipes to preventing clogs…not great for toilet bowl though that’s a completely different recipe…note: cheaper than most cleaners and these are the base ingredients of the modern cleaners.
Rinse the sink.
Genuine question: are people just spraying cleaner on things and not wiping or rinsing it away? This is not the first mention of it I've seen this week
I don’t usually rinse it fully. I spray the entirety of the sink/counter and wipe it with a dry cloth then just wash my hands in the sink and call it a day
Add a minute of running the tap and your kitty is fine. Some cats love sinks. Mine love joining me in the shower. Not really something to train them out of, just an adapt situation. And awfully cute
rinse it pretty well by scrubbing it with a clean sponge for a minute or two and you should be fine
Maybe try a sheet of foil in the sink.
I tried this to discourage her jumping on my counters… turns out it makes fun sounds and she plays with it. This is her house really
My cat started eating it. I shut that down immediately
Mine just eats plastic at every opportunity 🙄
You can't stop it. They fit perfectly and think it is made for them!
slowly starts reaching for the handle
Idk
Mine is the drawers 🤣
You don’t…
Yup, some cats just like the sink. This is our brat, in the sink, every single morning. He has a bed, he even sleeps with us sometimes, but he prefers the sink ....
It is her sink. Your job is to rinse it really well and dry it after you have cleaned it for her.
You don't. It's a cat. It does what it wants. You're at its mercy now. Enjoy!
Lol I should have known. She’s not food motivated and I’ve given up on training her in any way consequently. I suppose it’s hers now
The first step is always acceptance of the situation. Lol.
You know what works extremely well. Dawn dish soap is a safer alternative to cleaning.
Serious question: has anyone ever successfully trained a cat?
Yes! One of my friends has a cat that is trained to sit and lay down and come but only listens when he wants lol he knows what the commands mean though
My mind is blown… I have never had a cat that gives two fucks what I have to say.
He reeeeeaaaaally likes treats. Especially since his food got cut back to reduce his immense pudge
They train you! Can't train them, just don't piss them off or it will be a problem!
sink buddys
Put baby alligators in it.
I have one already captured
Maybe you can get her a round, shallow porcelain plant pot. I think she likes how cool it feels. But don’t be disappointed if she does’t use it. Cats rarely do what we want them to.
henry’s favorite spot
I don’t know…..
It's a cool place to lay, (temperature wise), and it's up high so they can observe their kingdom. It's a perfect spot for a cat.
One thing I’ve found some success employing on my cat is reverse psychology.
Cat jumps on counter, I put cat on floor. Cat gets back on counter because cat is in charge.
I put cat on counter, cat jumps down and stays off because cat is in charge. I get the result I want — he’s become very good about not jumping on my counter — without having to actively train the behavior out of him
…. You might be a genius. Genuinely. I bow before your big brain
Fill it with a little water but so that she doesn’t see it and she’ll jump onto the sink and then jump back out
Use a different cleaner
You just let it happen 🤷🏼♀️
Good luck. Best advice, rinse the sink out really well after cleaning.
It's only an issue if she starts to use it as a litter box. We just move ours off the counter every time he is up there.
Rinse it off? Oxyclean should easily rinse off with water and a good scrub
First of all , it's not your sink. Second of all, where are the snacks.
How about we talk about the beautiful bathroom? The cat looks perfect in that spot so don’t discourage it, cats need to explore different territory
Its definitely a black cat thing
:7963: you can't 😭🤣
You don't!
Why would you want to discourage it?
Get another sink
You figure it out, let me know.
I think I did figure it out and the answer is rinse the sink after cleaning because it’s her new throne lol
Good hooman
The sink is nice and cool. Leave the cat alone.
It’s hot. Leave her alone.
You mean "How do I discourage myself from using my cat's sink?"
The sink looks better with the void tbh
Stop using toxic cleaners. It's better for you and the cat. She's probably hot and likes the coolness of the porcelain. Why stop her? She's not damaging anything.
My kitties love the sink and also bathtub. Kitchen sink also, I’ve lost all control
I’d say turn the water on but I did that to my kitten and he started swimming around and loved it.
You need to get in the sink before her. Assert dominance.
I’d say keep the bathroom door closed and be sure to shoo them out if they slip in.
I have fully embraced my sink cat.
You don’t. The sink belongs to her now.
Mine orefers the bath lol. Apparently bath water has a superiour taste
You don’t. Switch to pet/environment friendly cleaning supplies and make sure to rinse the sink thoroughly. Also, get a kitty water fountain.
Is oxiclean not a laundry product?
They make both
I believe Oxiclean is mostly powdered hydrogen peroxide. It might potentially bleach out their fur at worst, but I think it’s fairly safe.
When I clean mine, I spray, scrub, and lock the cat out to let it sit. Then I run the water hot and fill the sink. Let it soak, then drain and rinse while wiping and splashing water on it. That should get any residue off.
I Guess Im adding filling the sink to my cleaning routine lol
I use a scrub daddy, hot water and dish soap for pet safe bathroom cleaning. Hope that helps
I too have Sink Sleepers. Just make sure you rinse the sink out really well after cleaning it. My cats have never gotten sick from napping in the sink. No need to be concerned, it’s a common behavior for cats to curl up in a tight comfy space that fits them like this. Also, they see you in the bathroom all the time so they are curious about what’s up in that space, and naturally find a spot to hang out in there also! Mine will go into the shower immediately after I get out (Me wanna knOw whAt you wER doING in tHERe). When I clean the toilet, both my cats come running to check it out (wHY aRe yoo dOIng ThAt??). They take turns Sink Sleeping or sleeping on the bath mat outside the tub. I have yet to see one of mine try to sleep in or on top of the toilet, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they tried it at some point haha!!
Simple Green
To be honest my 17 yr old cat drinks from the sink- I leave my faucet on a drip even though I’d rather him drink from a bowl…..
Remove the sink? Move to a house without a sink?
Turn the tap on? Lol jokes. It's very cute. I sometimes wish my cat did this.
The sink is now covered in black hair lol but it is quite cute while she’s in there. I’m just going to step up my rinsing game so she can be safe whilst being adorable
Haha true! They leave a lovely mess wherever they lie down. Dreading moulting season. Maybe nice and cool in the sink if it's summer where you are too!
turn on the sink ehhehehe
If they stopped making sinks purrfectly cat-shaped, maybe they’d stop laying in them. But they’d probably still lay in them.
Void does what void wants.
This is a permanent cat behavior. Unless you want to give your cat sink associated PTSD from trying to stop it, let your cat do it's thing. Maybe just rinse out your sink a little better after the Oxyclean. Your cat is just trying to cool off from the heat. A stone slab does wonders as a low-tech cooler.
We purposely don't use harsh chemicals in areas we know our bois will be slicking and messing around in. On that note, we bought a steamer to ensure the surfaces are clean.
It's actually your cat's house, not yours. Cats can do whatever they want
Other than leaving an inch of standing water, I’ve got nothing.
My cats do it too.
Old pic from years ago but even at 15 years old he still climbs into this sink.
Good luck. As others have posted, cats really love sinks lol
I thought only my cat loved that place in the house ☺️
Cat is trying to get cool. Besides, she likes the shape. Purrrfect to lay in. I had cats that did that. Maybe get her a circular bed.
Cats LOVE to sit in something circular. Get some masking tape and tape a circle about 2-3' in circumference on your carpet. Someplace where she normally doesn't sit. Like right in the middle of the room. Or do that when your kitty is in the room. Then, when you're reading or watching TV (in same room) see if she goes in the circle.
Here's my cat Julius in his first ring. I saw that I made it too small. Did make a bigger one. I used the brown packing paper that places use for packing stuff.
Try thoroughly rinse the sink after cleaning because sinks are cat magnets
Lol
Not much can be done.
At least it’s not your crockpot
No man has ever convinced a cat of anything.
You use another sink! This one is busy!
Do you not rinse the chemicals off after you clean the bathroom?
Good luck discouraging it. Keep the bathroom door closed if you’re concerned ?
My cats looove the sink
