I am graduating at the end of 2024 with a BS in Accounting with a minor in computer information systems. The amount of people on the accounting page hate their jobs, would advise their kids to not go into accounting, saying how horrible the pay is, they work crazy hours, saying we will be replaced with AI, there is literally nothing positive on that page. It has me thinking that I should have majored in Finance. It will take me 30 years to make 6 figures in accounting. Finance I could make 6 figures in 4-5.
I’m also extremely embarrassed where im getting my degree from. It is in state college with an 89% acceptance rate. So seems they admit anyone. The college I wanted to go to was $20,000 for 4 classes.
After I get this worthless degree I think I’m going to go back. Has anyone switched out of accounting to something better?
Please please please don’t base the outlook of accounting on angry Reddit users. I got my accounting degree from a cheap online school. I stayed away from public and got a job working for an amazing company doing industry/private accounting and don’t work more than 45 hours. Here are some things to consider: 1. Accounting is an incredible useful SKILL and can translate into many career paths. 2. You don’t have to go into public or B4 at the start. (Though Reddit will make you think this is the only way) 3. Government accounting jobs hardly ever work more than 40 hours. 4. Your career path and salary potential is based on the decisions you make while working and not based on your degree or college you attended. 5. The opinions you read on the internet are a minuscule proportion of the actual opinions out there. Angry and bitter people will go on Reddit to complain. Happy and content people don’t go on Reddit to talk about how content they are. 6. We’re a long ways away from getting replaced by robots. Even if we do get replaced, see point 1.
