I did that ride last Fall and loved it. That stretch of trail where you took that photo all the way to Cumberland is some of the nicest trail I've ever ridden on.
For sure! I really fell in love this year with the section from handcock to Harper’s ferry.
Woohoo! Congrats. Thats a great double. I’d like to get back to it, but maybe just the C&O for starters, same direction, south to north. I loved that ride.
Just did it in April :)
Cool! I was looking at gravel bikes and these Canyon appeared. What is this model? Is the gear ratio good for climbing?
This is the Grizl CF SL8. I am using a 50-10x 42t gearing. The gearing works for my area which has a good amount of climbing.
Rad. Fingers crossed on the weather, we're hitting that route this month as well.
Awesome! I start my C&O trip Tuesday. Heading northbound.
Enjoy! Just a word of caution. Idk if they finished it because I have not heard anything else about it, but when we came through last week out of Cumberland they had a section of trail blocked off and they guy stopped and flagged me down said they were shutting down the trail and would have heavy equipment on the trail doing repairs.
Whoa, good to know thanks. NPS website doesn’t mention any closures around there. Do you remember about how far out of town this was?
Right in front of the water treatment plant, went all the way to the next road crossing. I assume it was just a day job if it is not on the NPS website.
Thanks so much for the intel. It would suck to get stuck so close to the end.
nice! which direction did you go?
Pit to DC this is our third year of this ride!
I’ve only done it once. Is it worth doing multiple times?
I've done it about annually since 2016. The more you ride it, the more you learn to see along the trail like the short side trip into Layton to see Buffalo Bill's house (from Silence of the Lambs). I've done it in mid summer and early November. The late season makes it an entirely different trail With the leaves down there are more and better views.
I did it later October last year and loved it because of how quiet it was. What’s your favorite time to ride it?
I think so! There is still new stuff I see all three years.
I’m looking to do this late summer or fall? Are there ever places to take a dip along the way? All the videos I’ve seen, people don’t seem to despite the ever present rivers.
One of the guys on our trip took multiple dips in the rivers 😂 there is plenty of spots! Also there is camp sites all along the way and most are right on the banks of the river
Good to know! Thanks!!
How many days did you do? How was it?
5 days started on Saturday and arrived in DC on Wednesday. We staggered it for Saturday because the Pittsburgh marathon was that Sunday and we leaned that the hard way our first year 😂
I just bought the guide book and I’m dying to do this soon. Did you camp or stay in towns.
Stay in towns. Less headaches and logistics to deal with. This is our 3rd year and it was more enjoyable than the past two years.
And less to pack on the bike. Did you make reservations at places or just roll in and hope for the best?
Made reservations. We did as much on the front end as possible so we could just enjoy the riding and the scenery. The only unknown we had was where we would have lunch each day and that was still a we know general area of where we would be eating.
Last question I promise. Which towns did you spend the night?
Ask me all the questions you want! I want to spread my knowledge so that others can enjoy this trail as much as I have! Day 1: Pittsburgh to Ohiopyle ~80 miles Day 2: Ohiopyle to Cumberland ~78 miles Day 3: Cumberland to Handcock ~75 miles Day 4: Handcock to Harper’s Ferry(my favorite day) ~65 miles Day 5: Harper’s Ferry to George Town Mile 0 ~ 62 miles.
nice....
