Hijacking top comment to say, if you're throwing up bile, you need to go to the hospital.
I was rural and couldn't travel ten hours for care, so they told me to stop drinking water for two hours to reset my system, then sip it.
It's the only thing that got me through. I should have been in hospital with an IV.
Second closest I've come to feeling like I'd die.
I mean, now I have to ask. What was the closest?
Well I have a couple. The one that comes to mind is one I've posted about before ; my driver's side window imploded on me while I was driving on the highway.
I've also blacked out, choking to death on food as a child. And got glanced by a public bus as a teenager.
And I'm sure other things. A tree fell down right in front of me a few years ago.
My family has the Mr. Magoo gene.
User name checks out
Man, you got the Bruce Lee family curse!
Are you a cat?
got glanced by a public bus
They stare daggers!
what is IV?
Intravenus Therapy or indonesian ussualy called it infus...
Intravenous. It’s a line of saline fluids used to hydrate you in usually moderate to severe situations of dehydration .

Such a vile comment. Now I have a picture of the type of person who would make this uneducated ignorant racist comment. lol an Australian who likes replica watches and worries about baht conversion. lol
That’s interesting, but no one actually asked your opinion.
What a really really stupid comment
Why are you even in this sub then
Dried fruit is one of the worst things to eat, will just go straight through
Yeah wtf
It’s also ridiculous to wait 3 days
Came here to say the same thing! Dried fruit!!? Wtf - that’s what you eat if you are constipated. Best thing you can try to eat it plain white bread or a cracker.
Call a doctor. Jeez why wait?
Dr Ari is one of the most popular and reliable services. He has doctors all over Bali
+62 812 3954567 +62 812 3924814
Send whatsapp message and they will be there in an hour or two. It's going to be about 1.3m IDR and usually they are cash only.
They will give you a shot, antibiotics and anti nausea meds
Heading to Bali later this year and I am saving this number!
This. Call Dr Ari
a shot
What's in that shot?
They said anti nausea meds stuff to settle stomach.
+62 823-2191-1911 Whatsapp them. They are a clinic in Ubud and Canggu. I went through something similar and they came to my hotel room and hooked me up to an IV with fluids and vitamins. Give them a stool sample so they can figure out what bug it is and treat it accordingly. In my case, I was hoping that it will go away, but 3 days later I was still not getting well. They asked for a stool sample and tested it. I had 2 parasites in it. They prescribed an antibiotic right away and I started taking it. The following day I was better already. It ruined almost 5 days of vacation, but I got over it. If I would have known, I would have given them a stool sample day 1.
How much was it?
This happened to me also, except I just had a doctors appointment and they prescribed antibiotics (no samples). Anyway it cost me like 1.6m
How much is “1.6m” in dollars or Euros? Do you mean 1.6 million of the local rupiah?
1.6m rupiah I assume. $150 Australian or $100USD.
Yeah 1.6m in local Indonesia rupiah
I believe it was around $77 USD/consultation.
Do you remember what parasites you had? Just curious
I had Amebiasis, which is a GI infection caused by Entamoeba Histolytica and Entamoeba Coli.
Get the iv drip worked for us
Yeah contact the dose Bali! I felt better in about 45 minutes 🙌🏼
Waiting 3 days to call a doctor is your first mistake.
JFC, why do you posters all hate doctors for some reason? It's cheap and they get you fixed up in no time.
Then doing some sort of PSA: stay safe everyone, don't see doctors if you are vomiting for 3 days.
Because we are from America where healthcare is terrible and just one doc visit can potentially bankrupt you. I love going to other countries where docs are actually helpful and affordable.
It' will be like $50 usd inc medicines
So why did you travel to the other side of the world without doing even a remote scrap of research about how much it might cost to see someone in an emergency there?
If you had enough money to get on a plane then you can use the internet and buy travel insurance too ffs.
What are you even talking about? This has nothing to do with my comment. Were you trying to reply to someone else?
I most definitely have travel insurance.
So if you have travel insurance, then ‘American healthcare costs money’ is irrelevant to the country you are staying in, and is thus not a defence against seeking treatment?!
Bro i'm not hating on doctors, we are used in home country to see a doctor only in emergency cases... And self medicate. Maybe it is a mistake yes but not intended
You don't think that vomiting constantly with an extreme stomach ache for more than a day to be an emergency?
man if I spend longer than an hour throwing up I consider going to the hospital hahahaha fuck putting up with that for three fucking days!
If you go to the ER(since you can't get a doctor) in Canada for stomach problems, you will probably wait 3 days to be seen. /s
If you are waiting in a hospital it's a good thing. You really don't want to be guy skipping queue.
Same 😭😂 I threw up ONCE and had the dr on call at my house within the hour
Once.. I mean come on
It was like fizzy acid, it wasn’t normal at all and I had just given birth so was like 💀😮💨😰
Idk chief. If you’re vomiting for 3 days don’t you think you should see a doctor
3 days of food poisoning?? It is a mistake. It’s also concerning that you travel without a base understanding of how sick you can get and when to call a doctor. You do not have regular food poisoning. You likely have ecoli poisoning and this can be deadly when not treated. You eating is not as big of a concern as not drinking. Throwing up bile can damage the stomach. Seek help immediately
How is it that you were able to use the internet all by yourself to get a flight but couldn’t do the most basic research to figure out what you might do in a medical emergency abroad? Or even just, you know, learn that different countries are different?
Just go to the hospital. You're in a foreign tropical country, there's all sort of nasty diseases. At bare minimum you need blood test and if you're also having diarrhea, you need a stool test. If it's a bacterial infection, you would have been given antibiotic and you'd be back to enjoying your holidays already. Not only it is inexpensive here but if you have basic travel insurance it's even cheaper.
And a basic rule of thumbs, if it's food poisoning, you will puke and feel really sick for a day and then it's over. Any more than that and it could be a virus (there's a whole menu to choose from), a bacterial infection or god knows what else (parasites and other fun stuff).
who the hell told you to eat a few dried fruits ? you go on a BRAT diet immediately Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast for 2 days 🤦🏻♂️
Definitely get a doctor to come around and an IV drip, you’ll thank yourself later and it won’t be too expensive either :)
Contact Dose Bali… get an IV. I’ve used them a few times and they’re amazing. They’ll come to see you at your hotel too.
Go to an emergency room in a hospital immediately! Kasih Ibu hospitals in Bali are good, and they speak decent English. If you don't have insurance or are on a strict budget, consider going to Sanglah hospital in Denpasar. Reddit is not reliable for making medical diagnoses!
Drink Pocari sweat, electrolytes in your bottled water. Immodium and charcoal Tablets. Force yourself to eat. Don't eat any seafood.
The body can survive for two weeks without food, two days without water. The dangerous part in these illnesses is dehydration, THAT'S what kills people. If someone has food poisoning (or gastro) they shouldn't force themselves to eat anything they don't want to, provided they keep up with the fluids.. and while electrolytes are great, they're not essential except in the more extreme cases by which time a person should already have presented at hospital, or at least the local clinic.
No imodium. You don't want anything that will delay getting the toxic stuff out. Eating anything will just prolong it.
Yep Dr told me this yrs ago when I had food poisoning. Shitting is the body's way of getting the bad junk out of you (that and throwing up).
No mate - it’s doctor time. They’re three days in, they need medical attention.
This is pretty bad advice unless you know what bug you have. Imagine you have cholera or shigella. Pocari sweat will keep you hydrated so that's good, but imodium will just stop you from shitting and will NOT kill the cholera or shigella. Charcoal tablets do not kill bacteria, and can cause vomiting. And forcing yourself to eat without dealing with the pathogen that is causing diarrhea and vomiting will just lead to more diarrhea and vomiting.
I agree with not eating seafood. And most food.
Ultimately, get a stool test done to find out what pathogen you have and then follow a doctor's advice on how to treat that pathogen. It's science, but it ain't rocket science...
Pocari, and Yakult twice daily… 36 hours if you aren’t on the mend call for/go to a clinic
They’ve already gone 72 hours without decent hydration. They need medical attention mate.
Yeh- I know…. That’s why I gave it a 36 hour limit, mate. And that’s if it’s a light one, if you are really sick go to the fukn clinic instead of Reddit
Couldn’t agree more! This dude must be delirious now with the effects of his illness to be still posting on here instead of getting medical treatment. Hope he takes everyone’s advice and gets medical attention.
But he ate some dried fruit! Hahaha
Yeah 36hrs is a good metric to go by imo. At that point it's clear its a bad one
Do you know what you contracted it from?
You might try reintroducing food through the BRAT diet once you can begin to stomach more - bananas, rice, apples, toast. That's been helpful in the past for me for recovering from stomach issues.
And like others have said, make sure you're drinking Gatorade or something similar to replace your electrolytes.
I hope you'll still have time to enjoy the rest of your traveling once recovered!
I'm surprised your hotel has not called a clinic for you already. Often they will do house calls too. Also no fruit, it's too acidic. Plain white rice is better. Vomiting is rare for just stomach upset.
I got sick earlier this week. Could be something going around. . . I went to this IV infusion spot (http://infusionbali.com) and was better after a day of resting.
Not sure what bali weather has been like last week but heatwave in SEA has caused an increase in food poisoning. Be super careful with food when there's a heatwave. ~500 people hospitalised from one restaurant alone in southern Vietnam.
NORIT, and then Yakult. Available at minimarts. Stay hydrated, keep your nutrition intake.
I would have called Dr after day 1
Zofran and electrolytes. Then get tested for h.pylori and get treated right away. Get tested for cdiff too if your symptoms are that bad.
Doctor/nurses line - online if you can find one that can prescribe. Hospital if you see blood or running a high fever. Electrolytes, ice cubes, crackers/bread/soup. Blood test, stool test. Good luck!
Sounds like classic Bali beli. Go to a doctor, get an IV drip and don't eat anything except clear broth if you can. If you start to feel better, try introducing some bread
Why are your still thinking? After day 2 get medical advice
•Yes, bali belly is a real thing.
•Related to contaminated water, drinks, fruits, vegetables, under cooked meat and poor hygiene
•Please seek medical attention
•
Drink lots of gatorade or anything with electrolytes to keep you hydrated thats the biggest risk. I recently went thru something similar. Good luck and fast recovery
The doctor's probably going to give you cipro. If the cipro doesn't work, it could mean you got some bad rice which is a whole different thing and requires a different type of antibiotic. You can walk into any pharmacy and get cipro.
As an American. I understand the hesitancy to seek medical help, but depending on where you are, your entire visit, including antibiotics, probiotics and something to calm your intestines might run $50 USD total.
My thought is you've suffered enough. If they have it where you are, consider having the doctor come to you. If not, just go.
Good luck & feel better.
Drink coconut water (slowly) and get some charcoal tablets from a local pharmacy.
Avoid eating anything for 48 hours - you will rapidly heal.
But also - call a doctor, there are many which will come home (or to your hotel) to diagnose and also give you medication. It doesn't cost a lot, and depending on your insurance, you may also be able to claim from travel insurance.
No coconut Water is a laxative
You really have to drink it to excess to get a laxative effect. It is actually recommended when you have diarrhea - see below
Maybe that was my problem. Drinking much!
We have drank coconut water, took Norit and also some buscopan to stop the aches but nothing worked even slightly. The only mistake is not calling a doctor 😅
SOS Medika on Jl Bypass, worked for Canadian Gov and anywhere SOS is, we went. Run by Aussies
Coconut water from a coconut or from a box? Best to get real coconut
Lol I like how OP has the physical and mental facilities to post this to reddit but not call a fucken doctor 2 days ago.
Also, wtf. If I have been throwing up for 3 days, literally the last thing on my list of things to do would be posting on reddit. Far out.

Most people call a doctor 3 days after getting it though, right?
There are plenty of pathogens in Bali that end up being fatal, but you should just continue to self diagnose and self medicate if that makes you feel better.
Charcoal is good because it binds to the crap. Electrolytes but stick to shop bought not fresh coconuts. They’ll probably be too rich and always a possibility they might be a bit off too. Keep it simple.
One thing that seems to help me is Norrit. Its activated Carbon/Charcoal. Take 3 in morning/night.
Do you have "Bali belly"?
Fresh coconut water and Yakult saved me. Apparently the enzymes in a fresh coconut react with something in your stomach to fight bad bacteria. That's what the guys at my villa told me anyway..good luck!
Go to https://www.internationalsos.com/assistance-centres They can run the test to determine what is wrong, they found out in 10 minutes that I digested a parasite. DON'T take food or medicine to stop vomiting or diarrhea, I my case the parasites needed to be "flushed it".
Flushed out.
Do you have travel insurance including for health? If so, call the travel insurance company and go to the nearest provider recommended by them.
There are water born bugs but also parasitic organisms which will live in your gut. Those need special medicine.
Norfloxacin twice a day for three days. No alcohol. Can affect the pill and heart meds.
Bali is dirty food paradise
Salmonella
what did you eat?
Sounds like salmonella poisoning
It can kill you and hurts like crazy

Went on a family holiday to Thailand and my mum got terribly sick from eating a salad that had been washed with contaminated water. And that was from our very luxurious resort, not even any kind of street food!
She was ‘leaking’ (as she called it) for 3 days after, it was pretty horrible
my ex DIL got dengue fever in Bali, very dangerous and lost some vision in both eyes. Hospital will send an ambulance if you contact them and it sounds like you need one.
Sounds like dengue fever
Make sure you down some over the counter electrolyte packets.
My son is in Bali and exactly the same symptoms. Ended up calling a Dr and they put him on IV and antibiotics. Clearly something’s going around Bali.
It's Bali Belly most likely. Easy to get from the water. Very common.
Get tested for Dengue fever, call a reputable doctor or get yourself to an Aussie run clinic pronto !
What is the best way to avoid getting these bugs?
Don't drink the water. Don't brush teeth with the water. Keep your mouth closed in the shower.
You travel to Indonesia and don't bring any medice with You ?
OP, please Update! I left Bali April 28. Myself and 2 friends had vomiting and diarrhea the entire 24 hr trip home. I did not feel better until 3 days ago. Get a doctor and get the IV!
Did you drink the tap water?
I’m going to Bali in a few weeks, I’m terrified of this and getting sick. Any tips to prevent food poisoning? Seems inevitable.
Don’t drink the tap water, only drink the bottled water they give you in the rooms or you can get 1.5L bottles from Circle K for 8000-10000 Rupiah (equivalent to roughly 80c to $1 in Australia). Similarly, don’t drink anything with ice in it :)
It's called Bali Belly. Don't consume any water and you should be ok.
RN here . Yes you will have dehydration. Washing hands is a good idea when travelling in Bali. These bacteria are transferred from bum to hand to mouth. Hand washing is vital. It would be worth getting a microbiome test when you get home. Shigella is rife there and you could also have Giardia
The water is what caused it, by the way. It's very common. Just have to make sure that you use bottled water.
Travelled for over 30 years in Asia and eaten street food even in India. Yes the water but you can’t tell whether plates are dried properly before you eat the food that has been put on them. Hand to mouth from bum is often a main cause. Touching tables or counters where these hands have been or communal utensils like on a buffet. If the pathology comes up with an ecoli bug then that’s what it could be.
Or ecoli from the water... Seriously, even Indonesians stay away from consuming the water. It's just that bad. Could it be something else, sure. However, it is more likely they rinsed off their toothbrushes or accidentally ingested some in the shower. I can tell you, from experience, that ecoli doesn't feel half as bad as Bali Belly. I had ecoli for a month. Had a couple IVs over that time. My last bout with Bally Belly hit hard and within 24 hours I was unable to lift my head off the bathroom floor. Thank God I was living with the founder of the klink at the time. I feel queasy thinking about it.
Regardless of what it is. I hope the are much better.
Call Dr ari his team will fix you then buy some hand sanitizer and pro biotic
Man waiting for three days before thinking of calling a doctor while you vomit your guts out from both end seems rough. Sounds like an american with their fear of health care price
Local water washing vegetables or local water in ice cubes
At this point it’s hospital or getting a doctor to visit for IV. Major thing in Bali is avoiding ice in drinks as well as obviously any salads. Charcoal as soon as symptoms start. Locals have yakult daily.
You mean avoiding salads?
Yes. Never know which water was used to wash the vegetables.
I got quite sick when I was in Bali last year; after day 8 I finally bit the bullet and had a doctor come to my hotel. For the call out, assessment and medication, it cost me $75 CAD. Call the doctor!!
Are you in Ubud? If so, don't go to hospital. Go to Bumi Sehat in Nyuh Kuning. They will take good care of you. You will get the "yellow pills". Freaking life savers. Also, at Bumi, it will not cost like hospital and is a lot nicer.
If you and see Ibu Robin, tell her Angie from the US says hi and send love to Grandma.
Go to a doctor. It could be life threatening.
On the other hand, very very thick milo drink (only milo and hot water) has helped with mild diarrhoea (that went on more than a day, but no puking) for my friends and I.
Have you never had a bad stomach in your life lol who fucking eats dried fruit when they are shitting or throwing up loads?
Just eat plain, simple carbs like bread, rice, etc basically the BRAT diet. And ye you should probably call a doctors...
This does not sound like a simple food poisoning.. I think you may have comsumed contaminated water.
I had the sh!ts and vomitting for a week and a half after drinking water at a dodgy stall.
I know dengue and typhoid are going around. A few friends got both. Not sure on symptoms but might be good to double check
I had to go to a doctor and got on an iv and had antibiotics. Never been so sick. Cost me 500 aussie dollars but worth every cent
Call a doctor I would have been to the in a flash save you anxiety mate .
Definitely call a Dr, that’s what travel insurance is for. Why waste a holiday being sick, hope you feel better soon.
Bruh are people this dumb
Welcome to Bali
From this flowchart depicting the approach you can take for mild, moderate and severe travelers diarrhea, I'd say you and your wife are in the 'severe' category. You should begin a 3 tablet (once a day) course of Azithromycin.
The Hilton Resort actually has their own clinic at the hotel.
If you don’t do the IV, look for drinks with electrolytes like Gatorade…or whatever they have there like this. When I was sick there I finally managed to eat some Pringles and drink electrolytes after a few days.
I never travel overseas without some Cipro.
I had similar issues in Thailand. For one horrible evening (about 1700-2300.)
Cipro and right as rain the next day.
(I blame my husband’s cooking of the frozen dumplings from the grocery store. They tasted fishy (literally like fish buttholes) but I choked a few down to be polite. I no longer do that. If it’s gross, I stop eating.)
I’d drink water kefir.
What did you eat?
Bro literally go to the shop buy some yakult digestive probiotic to cull the bacteria, some pocari sweat to replenish your dehydration, and some ibuprofen anti inflammatory to quell the stomach aches how have you made it this far in life
Ibuprofen in someone who is dehydrated from non stop vomiting? What if that person has pre-existing renal impairment? Or is on an ACE inhibitor or diuretic?
Oh cool a Reddit comment guy, awesome! Well, if there person has any of those things, or allergy to NSAIDS then they would know not to take them, move on, bozo.
This comment is stupid. No one should take ibuprofen when they’ve been vomiting for two days
Sorry, three days
Imagine how ripped your gonna be 😍
You just have to wait it out. Eating will make it worse. Nothing helps but getting it out both ends. Drink enough water and salt, or electrolytes to prevent serious dehydration.
Hospital is an option, but there really isn't much they can other than give you an IV which will save you the pain of forcing yourself to drink.

Go to the reception at your hotel and tell them the problem and they will call a doctor for you, it doesn’t cost much. He might put an IV line in to treat you. It’s a common problem and easily fixed, you should have done this after the first day.
